Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

  • Big Mistake - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Im embarrassed to drive my jeep. Its parked in my garage. The brakes squeek so loud you could hear me a mile away. Ive had the brakes fixed over 4 times and still the same problem. I cant get rid of it because I owe more than what its worth... It was a mistake to have purchased this car! I thought I had a lemon, but after reading everyones review I see that the 99 Grand Cherokee is a lemon in itself...

  • No Problems w/37k mi - 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I havent had any of the problems Ive read about. This is my 3rd Grand Cherokee (3 Yr leases). I have 37k miles so far, my lease is up in Jan03. Gas Mileage is poor, 17mpg with 4.0 engine. My 95 got 23mpg, my 97 got 21mpg. Handling, comfort, perfomance are fine, Infinity stereo is excellent. I was going to buy this one, but after reading all of the problems, maybe not.

  • 2ND TIME AROUND. - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Just purchased 04 JGC Laredo after putting on a whopping 325K (yes you read right!)on my 98 GC(original motor and trani...).I searched for a while to find the 6cyl with lower miles.Anyone who claims that these vehicles are not reliable,Id strongly argue. My 98 went through regular maintenence and never left me stranded on the road(i travel in upstate NY,and New England as a sales rep.).Of note. I kept the trani. serviced very regularly as i found that to be real helpful with the overall performance. My 04s ride feels a bit smoother, and more refined than 98, and definately felt better than 05-06 model.Looking forward to putting another 300k on this one!

  • Broke after 250 miles - 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

What a piece of junk. After only 250 total miles, my car suddenly turned off in the middle of a busy highway. The engine would not turn over - had to have it towed. The dealer is telling me that the engine will not recognize the key(s)- we tried both. Based on this, caution to off roading - very disappointed being a BMW and Ford Expedition owner where at least a warning light will come on when something is wrong. You get nothing with the Jeep! Even when the car will not start you get no warning. My dealer call back is questionable as well. I am used to BMW service and follow-up; thank god I kept the BMW. So now that Fiat is here I hope they look into this issue.

  • Accident "first hand" - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I was involved in a near head on collision with a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix going high speed on 1/26/06. My Jeep was totaled, but I managed to walk away with no cuts, or broken bones, suffering only neck & back strains. Thanks to Jeep for building such a safe vehicle. You saved my life.

  • Biggest "HEAP" ever - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I hardly even drive this car and it has had every problem in the book: brake failure, electrical, transmission, and oil tank leaks and ALL before 50,000 Miles. It is weak and has horrible handling. The dealership charges WAY too much for service and it feels like Im driving a motor home. It is way too hard to maneuver in traffic and you feel like your going to tip over on every turn!! resell value was HORRIBLE! Save yourself the trouble and dont buy a jeep!! this is the first and last time I will buy an American car, back to Japanese auto makers

  • Excellent car! - 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I loved my Jeep Grand Cherokee up til someone ran into me and totaled out my poor car, they bent the frame. had around 200,000 miles on him and was still running strong for the most part. It was our only car so my husband and I put lots of miles on it driving it back and forth to our jobs and he held up very well. Did have some issues with mysterious electrical problems. Sometimes car wouldnt start unless you jiggled the battery wires (battery was good) and the power windows decided they didnt want to work any more. Also, for some reason the cruise control and overdrive stopped working so I got really bad gas mileage, not it got good mpg to begin with.

  • My JGC Laredo - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Im a single mom in the military and I LOVE my Jeep! My last vehicle was a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and my 2005 definitely handles much more like a car vs my 1995. My mom drives a Cadillac and even she loves to drive my Jeep. With the simple steering I have been able to avoid several near misses without pulling my arm out. My mom likes it because its effortless to try and steer. About the only things I can say against it is the gas mileage (which is expected out of an SUV), the exterior style and when the back seats fold down, they dont fold down flat. I love all the "extras" that come standard.

  • Decent Car - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I have 130,000 miles on the Grand Cherokee and am decently happy with it. I have had to change the transmission twice, but luckily my warranty covered it. The AC is going out and it gets AWFUL gas mileage but otherwise is a good car.
