Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

  • So Far.. So Good.. - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Overall a very nice SUV. 3500 miles so far and no problems or issues. Good power and sweeet sound from the 4.7 V8. Very nice daily driver if you dont mind pulling up to the gas pump a bit more often. Very linear steering tracking, no wander or stray. Brakes are strong and progressive. Fairly low wind noise even with large side mirrors. Much nicer ride/drive/handling than previous GC, though can be a bit floaty over certain bumps. Excellent headlight throw and pattern at night, both low/high beam. People compliment the new style. Seats firm yet comfortable once you get settled in. Controls laid out well, easy to see/reach. Nice optional sound system.

  • love the new jeep, but - 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought a new JGC in May 2011, the limited version with the hemi. Love the look of the new jeep inside and out. fun to drive with the power of the hemi. Have had one problem with it so far. went out to start it the other morning and it was completely dead. called roadside assist and they came out and jumped started it. but then all the warning lights stayed on and the gauges did not work. took it to the dealership and they told me your not supposed to jump start the new jeeps because they have a AGM battery in them. it turns out when they jumped it a computer modele was fried. not sure why it went dead in the first place, waiting to see if it happens again.

I bought it brand new and drove it extensively off road in the mountains of Colorado for the first 5 years, and have since driven it on the freeways of Southern California for another 5 years. It has 130k miles, still looks stylish, and runs like a top with little extra yearly maintenance.

Ive had 1994 & 1997 Explorers and 2000 Grand Cherokee. They were all reliable but I love this one the best of all. I will most likely buy it at the end of the lease.

  • Great Jeep - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I test drove many vehicles before deciding on this jeep, and I love it so far. Drove it 325 miles first off to take it home. It has a little more wind resistance then I am use to, but Ill get use to that, and the gas mileage isnt quite as good as my car, but except for those 2 things, I cant say enough good things about my Grand Cherokee

  • Not happy - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

We owned a 1995 Grand Cherokee, V-8 for 3 or 4 years. Bought it used and drove it until it had 250,000 miles on it. It began stalling out under all conditions and NO ONE could find the answer. We then bought a 1999 Grand Cherokee with 110,000 miles, and it has been a piece of junk! Our friends have a 1999 Grand and our problems mirror each others, costing hundreds of dollars for each repair. To replace power window mechanism; $400+ each window. Tail light unit; $250+ each. Front drive shaft (new design for that year); $500+. We are done repairing! We want a different Jeep Grand, but to find the year with the least problems.

  • My Jeep - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought this Jeep used in Aug 04. It was a leased vehicle. Everything has been working perfectly, and given the 8 cylinder engine Im impressed with the mileage. The only problem that still exists with this style Jeep is the power window track mechanism. Just like in my old 85 Jeep it broke around 50,000 miles. You think theyd have this problem fixed by now.

  • Its a Jeep Thing! - 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I purchased my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 183,000 miles from a private seller because I needed something with 4WD that would carry me through the harsh New England winters. The Jeep was it! It was a great value and the Jeep never let me down! It was stylish and comfortable too. It was probably the most reliable vehicle Ive ever had the pleasure of owning. The only issue I had during ownership was an evaporative leak and if you know cars, then you know an evaporative leak is nothing, especially for a vehicle with high mileage. I sold the Jeep with 197,000 miles and it had no signs of stopping anytime soon. I sold it to someone locally and I still see him driving it around town from time to time. The Grand Cherokee in unstoppable!

  • Everything is great except powertrain - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

This has really been an excellent car, except for the recent transmission problems Im having now. This SUV drives smoother, has better interior, and more power than even some of the V8s in its class (Ford, Nissan, Toyota, etc). But the transmissions are notorious for going bad soon after 50K (Im one of the unlucky ones). It slips when shifting between 2nd gear and drive...it either hesitates between gears, or wont shift out of 2nd until the rpms are way high. The new tranny is costing me $3000. If you notice any weird sounds or shifting behavior...dont delay...take it in asap.
