Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

This Jeep now over one year old is running well with no mechanical problems. Find the interior way to small. I tend to get cramped on long trips. Came from a Dodge Durango and wish I had that type of space. Ride a little rough, but handles well. NO regrets, and would happily recommend this vehicle to anyone.

This is the most uncomfortable SUV that I have ever driven. It lacks any power in the 3.7 liter and fuel economy is VERY POOR due to vehicle weight. Its in for major engine repair now that left me stranded in the middle of the road; it broke three intake springs with only 22,300 miles and well cared for highway miles. The seats you slide around on while driving - no contour to seats, tilt wheel is difficult to operate, doors slam back at you when opening, and major blind spot in windshield at the A pillars. I will NEVER buy another Jeep product AGAIN! Daimler Chrysler/Jeep emergency roadside service leaves a major lot to be desired also. They wont call back when they say they will.

Jeep has the best TV commercials. Driving through the mud, under the lake, buried in snow, we all notice the applications. Owning 11 of the Grand varieties, and 3 Wrangler/CJ models. my first review. As far as the advertisements. I cant even drive my Overland on a rainy day, without the rotors warping, replaced at 16k, 36k, 47k, and needed again at 66k miles. To date, climate control problems ($900), starter replaced,3 batteries, multiple visits for unclogging A/C drainage onto passenger floor, drivers heated seat , CD changer not working, power side mirrors need exorcist. I have spent a considerable amount of time enjoying the benefits of performance in snow, ice, pulling the boat.

I bought the 99 model after testing it Carmax. So far we have had 2 power window motors replaced, the water pump, the door lock system failed, 2 speakers and the brakes twice. I cant keep front brakes on this thing. The good news is that we bought the extended warranty ( the mechanics have no clue what they are doing by the way). On the bright side, it is good for long trips and has enough room for my family of 4 and all our stuff. The four wheel drive works well also. As soon as we can afford it, I am trading it for a Ford F150 pickup.

  • Many Problems - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I am a five time Jeep owner. I test drove the new Grand Cherokee and fell in love with how it handles. After owning the car for one month, I began to have problems. The interior vinyl on the doors rips when bumped and I dont have kids! The car had four rust spots on the interior door frames. This problem had to be addressed twice. The exterior rubber molding was loose. The keys were not programmed correctly to my car which enabled the anti theft deterrent system. The car would stall over and over. My Laredo has been back to the dealer several times and has been kept up to two weeks for repairs. I suggest waiting to buy this new model until all the problems are corrected.

My Grand Cherokee has about 170,000 miles on it now and its still going strong. If youre looking for a vehicle and youre afraid about high mileage, do not dismiss the 96 Grand Cherokee. Its powerful, its comfortable, and it rides well for an SUV. Gas mileage is not great though. Weve only had a few problems with it- anti freeze leak, bearings wearing out in rear. Other than that, its a good, solid, reliable vehicle that you can take literally ANYWHERE. Thumbs up

  • Got What I Paid For - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Wanted a Jeep, got a Jeep. No major issues over the last 11 yrs and 125000 mi. Trying to make it last through all 3 kids and their early driving years - four yrs to go! Radio doesnt work well, tape deck(!) quit working, back lift gate is frozen in place (window works). Mechanically sound. No rust. Gave it tender loving care every 5,000 miles. Wish they hadnt discontinued the model...or the Cherokee Sport. Wish Id spent the extra $ and gotten 4WD.

I traded in a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with 130k miles. I looked at Lexus SUV, Cadillac and 4 Runner. None of them compared to the Jeep. Rugged, as always, but very refined compared to older Jeeps. Variable displacement is crucial. A big improvement from my old Jeep. Extremely fun to drive. If you are worried about fuel economy, buy a car. If you are looking for a class ride with a whole lot of muscle, drive this beast!

The love affair continues. Looking great, running great and the only problem so far, the voltmeter quit working. On order with the dealership. Coming from San Diego back to Arizona, there is a steep, long, descending and winding road. BMW X5 with low profile tires tried to loose me at speeds nowhere close to legal. He will for ever remember graphite Overland, and its oversized custom exhaust pipe.

  • Reliable once bugs are fixed - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Spent money on fixing brake system ($1000), cooling system ($500) and electric wiring system ($300) first 4 years, but it was due to poor maintenance. I have everything fixed and its been driving well.
