Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

Traded in my 2000 JGC Laredo (V8) for the 2004 JGC Limited (V8). Fourth Jeep I have owned...not as "problem free" as some imports but Jeep lovers tend to be loyal! Beautifully styled SUV, nice medium size. The V8 makes the JGC as quick as many alleged sports cars and is usually faster. A light tap on the accelerator gives a suprising burst of speed. Overall, a head turner, fun to drive, easy on the eyes. Fun to drive and recommended to anyone considering a JGC.

We bought the 2005 Laredo 4x4 with a V8 engine. The gas cost is unbelievable! I didnt think it would be this bad. I cant seem to get the mpg up to more than 14.7. Otherwise, the car is fun to drive and handles well. Its very roomy and comfortable.

Bought the Jeep new in Dec of 04 at a great price, and after 2 1/2 years of owning it we figured out why. Build quality is the poorest of any vehicle I have owned. The V6 is so underpowered it was almost scary at times, merging onto highways was not fun. The tranny wouldnt down shift as needed to keep the RPMs and torque up. Blind spots everywhere, seats stain with rain water or condensation off a water bottle, jittery / uncomfortable ride, no room in the back seats, I could go on but there is limited space left. Traded it on an 08 Pathfinder SE V6 with twice the power.

Im somewhat of a newcomer into the world of Jeep. However, after test driving the Grand Cherokee Laredo, my idea of Jeep changed drastically. For a mid-size SUV, it rides surprisingly smooth. Acceleration is decent with the 4.0L 6 and the interior features are convenient. While its still extremely new, I can say this vehicle is solid in terms of assembly. Let it snow and where are the trails?

Well have always thought of buying a Jeep and now I finally have. Was not really sure about it, but Frank Carbone was quite helpful in helping me come to my decision. The Jeep drives like a dream. With my children grown, I am looking forward to a vehicle for my husband and me. My Jeep is fully loaded and am sure Ill be riding around in comfort and style as soon as I get accustomed to all it has to offer. Heres hoping to to long time of fun and comfort.

  • this is a tough vehicle - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Im the 2nd owner. Overall a good vehicle. The only major issue has been front and rear axle bearings; also ABS is touchy. The performance of the Jeep has more than made up for its mechanical shortcomings. This thing is a beast in the mud and snow. Ive taken it into some very sticky situations and it has never let me down. Also, it was rear-ended by a 2001 Jimmy. It came out with relatively minor damage, while the Jimmy was trashed. I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a vehicle that will stand up to its reputation: a bit quirky mechanically, but great off road.

Ive had more problems with this vehicle. The a/c went out. Ive replaced 3 sets of front brake rotors, new front axles. Now its making a loud noise in the front end when you get to about 20 MPH and up. The dealer told me it was the transfer case. Someone else told me its the front differential. The door locks failed. Im getting rid of this one and wont buy another.

  • 2014 Jeep GC Overland DIESEL - 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Just traded my 2008 Mercedes GL 320 CDI for this GC Overland Diesel. Wow, what an awesome job Jeep has done with this engine and transmission. I cannot believe how impressed I am with the ride quitness, the engine, and transmission. The ride is much better than my Mercedes. The fit/finish and drivetrain puts my wifes 2012 GMC Acadia to shame! I am hard to impress when it comes to cars. I have owned BMWs, Mercedes, Hondas, Acuras, Volvos, and GMCs, but this diesel Jeep GC is by far my most favorite. (Edmunds did not have the diesel GC model available for review, thus the reason for chosing the V6 option)

  • Great car - on or off road! - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

This has been a great family car for a very active family. My kids are now teanagers and we bought this car to replace the minivan. We take it off road camping, drive in deep snow, rain, and have driven accross the country. I still like it five years later! Very little has gone wrong with it. Electric lock on the back hatch failed and weatherstripping on one door came loose. Its a heavy car, so breaks dont last as long as on a sedan. The 6 cyl. has all the power you need. The interior is a little tight for four people with gear on trips, but so much of the driving happens around town I couldnt see buying a larger SUV with a V8.
