Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

The jeep is a mixed bag. First hand it is great for towing and offroading. It also looks the best in my opinion of every other mid size suv out there. However the jeep has some very noticeable quirks. Ive had to replace the brakes repeatedly because of poor engineering allowing the brake routers to get heat cracked. It has also suffered from a lot of other issues as well, and always needs some type of maintenance.

  • All the problems you will encounter - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Jeeps are Jeeps, they are temperamental, but if you correct the known problems in advance, they will be a faithful friend for life. (see suggested Improvements) Too bad Chrysler, didnt recall the know problems.

  • Victim of R1234vf Freon - 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Unknown to me is the fact they changed to the new freon in the AC system. In Texas you have to have a strong AC. Instead of the coldest output air being 36-39 degrees, the best you get by factory definition is 44 degrees. I have a white exterior, tan interior, no sun roof. If it was all black with moon roof and five passengers, it would be unbearable at 100 degrees. There is no way a consumer knows unless you take along a thermometer when test driving. No cars reviews are ever given for climate controls. I just received a recall notice that due to a potential mfg defect, this model may be subject to an engine fire.

Driving is a pleasure. Interior and exterior are in great condition. Color is Black. The only other change will be the the stereo. If anyone can get this year truck, buy it!

  • Still going - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Bought this vehicle with about 35K miles on it. Up to about 120k now. Thing still going well. Problems to date: A/C leaks, on 3rd cat conv due to recalls, and just found out that exhaust manifold is cracked. Only regular maintenance beyond that. Like to get a new car but this thing just doesnt want to give up.

  • One hot hot rod - 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I love the performance of the Grand. I put in a K&N air filter and Bosch platinum 2 plugs. Handles great. She is a daily driver as I deliver pizza with the Grand; not the best gas mileage but stuck until VW gets fixed. Very comfortable, best vehicle to make deliveries with. I have not had any major problems yet. The transfer case was shot when i bought it and was replaced by the warranty. It does have the mechanical whine and the rotors and calipers are starting to warp, but there is a settlement to replace those now. The transmission does shift funny from time to time and the rear end is starting to groan when making slow sharp turns. She does have 132,000 miles and still running strong.

My Jeep is now in the shop for the 6th time in 5 weeks, for the same problem-it keeps shutting off; at lights, stop signs, on the road, in the parking lot. Lose power steering and brakes. Only has not quite 58,000 miles on it over 6 years and 3 months. I will NEVER buy another Chrysler car again.

  • Fun to Drive - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I have had my 2004 GC Loreado for a year and have 16,000 miles. It such a joy to drive, every trip is an adventure. The I6 engine has such great torque it always seems happy to respond. I have always been a driving enthusist, but the Jeep has me thinking up places to go just to drive it. Reliability has been outstanding, I wish I had bought one years ago.
