This Year's Model Updates:

The Avalanche gets numerous interior upgrades for '03 in addition to the midyear introduction of a "decladded" version that does without the oft-derided extensive lower body trim. Dual-zone climate control is now standard equipment on all models along with multistage airbags and a passenger airbag sensor. A redesigned instrument panel houses a more comprehensive driver information display; and an optional multifunction steering wheel puts climate, radio and trip computer controls right in the palm of your hands. New entertainment options include a Bose stereo system, XM Satellite Radio and a rear passenger DVD video system. Other new options include the StabiliTrak stability control system on 2WD half-ton models, adjustable pedals, and a fully automatic multizone climate control system.

Pros:
  • Versatile and innovative cab configuration, strong V8 engines, substantial towing ability.
Cons:
  • Some cheap interior pieces, lifeless steering, limited drivetrain choices.

  • Most Functional Truck Made - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

I gave up my 2001 Toyota Tacoma d-cab for a used Z-71 with 50,000 miles over 3 years ago. For a family of 5, the usability of the back seats is second to none. Where the Toyota 3.4L V6 screamed to tow my boat, the Avalanche handles it like nothing. The flexibility of the mid-gate is terrific. The bed tonneau panels are easy to remove and have remained water tight. The truck has a smooth ride on the road but can still perform off-road. Now I have 87,000 miles and only problem has been the rear power door locks have frozen up and need to be opened manually.

We started looking for something to tow our horse trailer because the Astro van wasnt cutting it. My wife visited a local dealership and drove a Z66 while I was out of town. I was leaning toward a pickup of some type but was concerned about vehicle length since I used to have a 95 extended cab 8 bed. When I drove the Z66 I couldnt believe the ride and handling. Then, when we pulled the trailer it was like nothing was back there. Now I cant get the Av away from my wife to drive myself! I want another one...

Great truck. Rides nice and smooth even with the Z71 package. Lacks the quickness of my 99 2 door Tahoe but it also weighs 2000+ lbs. plenty of highway get up an go. Very fuunctional.

This vehicle is versitile. It has extremely comfortable seating and plenty of room for each person. The ride is incredible. You would never know that you were driving such a big truck. You feel totally safe and secure on the road in this vehicle. We would recommend it to anyone, especially those with children.

Should have read ALL reviews before buying. Water Management System does not meet my needs for dry cargo space. Tried to salvage vehicle investment with Snugtop/GM XUV cap. X = eXpensive, but would be worth it if it kept water out. It doesnt. Snugtop sales said "Of course its watertight"; now service says "weather resistant not waterproof"; no other response to dealer request for help. Have owned truck 33 days (25 with rain), 500 miles. Am trading it in tomorrow. Performance item: auto. transmission slow to downshift (book says to floor it!), but may be normal; have had manual transmissions for 35 years.

I bought this truck to pull my 31 Airstream travel trailer. Put 10,000 miles on it from February-April this year. This vehicle is awesome! Does a GREAT job. VERY comfortable. I got ALL the options I think.

  • Would Be Great If It Worked! - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

This is absolutely an awsome vehicle, when it works. Bought it used with 75,000kms, had a few problems with it not starting in -15C the first winter but overall it ran good. Last year we started having issues, we bought it for $26,000 and weve put $18,000 back into it in maintenance ($8,000 in the last 6 months) . We cant get it running long enough to sell it. Had the entire front end torn apart a few times but no one can find the problem.

  • For the homeowner with kids... - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

With kids and frequent trips to Lowes/Home Depot, this is THE vehicle. It is big enough for the family and to bring home large items, yet small enough to fit in an average garage. Great ride.
