Overview & Reviews
The Avalanche gets numerous interior upgrades for '03 in addition to the midyear introduction of a "decladded" version that does without the oft-derided extensive lower body trim. Dual-zone climate control is now standard equipment on all models along with multistage airbags and a passenger airbag sensor. A redesigned instrument panel houses a more comprehensive driver information display; and an optional multifunction steering wheel puts climate, radio and trip computer controls right in the palm of your hands. New entertainment options include a Bose stereo system, XM Satellite Radio and a rear passenger DVD video system. Other new options include the StabiliTrak stability control system on 2WD half-ton models, adjustable pedals, and a fully automatic multizone climate control system.
- Versatile and innovative cab configuration, strong V8 engines, substantial towing ability.
- Some cheap interior pieces, lifeless steering, limited drivetrain choices.

My Z66-No Problems/No issues - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
By David - October 29 - 4:47 amThis vehicle was/is a Godsend. We purchased it as a promotion present for me when I became a police lieutenant. Little did we know that we would end up living in it when I became disabled in 2004. We have towed a 28 ft travel trailer from New Mexico to Florida then to Oregon then back to Florida and finally settled down in Oregon. It currently has 128322 miles, most of those occurred by 2006,(2 years). It has not spent one day in the shop due to a breakdown or malfunction. A few things had to be addressed during maintenance (like minor recalls) but so far we have been and are thrilled with it.

Still in the break in period - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
By Fire Inspector - October 3 - 2:00 amMiles per gallon? what do you pepole expect, look at the thing.None of us bought it without thinking this thing looks like it has got some big round ones. Its huge. I Like to see the cadi drivers and know I have the same thing but for half $. Does not bother me about the "leaking cover" (its a truck)remmember? cargo still stays dryer then in the Ramm or f-Series. I just worry like the rest about water in the cab from the mid-gate.

Great Investment! - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
By tarjac - August 25 - 4:18 pmPurchased new and have never regretted it! We wanted the bench seat and the only way to get it was to buy a stripped version - ours has no options at all, but its got everything we really need, and then some. Power locks & windows, A/C, cruise, CD. The bed & midgate get used regularly for everything from furniture to lumber to yard projects. We have had "0" mechanical problems. Now that gas is so high, better mileage would be great, but still there is no better all around family vehicle.

Perfect truck for any reason - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
By Hans2 - July 9 - 2:00 amBest truck on the road.I like the looks Very quiet. I have Z71 option. Ride is a little stiff, but needs to be for off road. I wish for 6.0 liter engine. The 8.1 is too much.

Lemon, current state of US auto mfg - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
By The Dude - April 3 - 11:49 amMy daily driver, inherited at 89k now 120k. Constant electrical problems. Wheel/steering shimmy. Tailgate cables broke. Electrical: tach and fuel gauge occasionally misread, reduced engine power comes on on cold starts and not as over-heating protection AC comes on in recirc mode, rear door locks only work manually and they keep blowing unlock relay fuse, difficulty starting-starter may be wearing out. Lumbar support is terrible for drives over an hour, but who can afford to drive that far anyway? Ring and pinion gears needed replacement at 115K. Ive read tons of problem blogs regarding electronics. Is this truck a lemon?

Perspective from a sporty car lover. - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
By Kenjan - November 26 - 10:00 amFirst of all I must confess, I used to hate trucks and SUVs. After my purchase of the Avalanche, I must confess I really fell in love with it. A lot of people complain about the fuel economy and the exterior styling, but I love the styling and buying the truck knowing the fuel economy, so that should not be the consideration factor. The ride is excellent even with the z71, the usefulness is amazing with the convert-a-cab, and most importantly, it is such a fun vehicle to drive. I would recommend this truck to anyone without reservation.

Chevy Avalanche - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
By billyjcraw - November 1 - 10:00 amThis truck (Z66,2x2 driving package) drives like a large car, smooth and quiet. The leather seating is comfortable, power is good. Turning radius leaves something to be desired. The styling is definitely for a particular taste. I like that Im getting a scaled down Cadillac Escalade (Same frame and body is used but with little style and cosmetic changes).Im interested in how reliable it will turn out to be. Ive picked up an annoying speed related noise coming from under the hood at about mile 3,000.

Most Awesome Truck! - 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
By melissa - October 18 - 1:48 pmI love this truck so much. It has been 100% reliable and for a V-8 gets excellent gas mileage. It still looks and drives like brand new! This has been the best drive of my life and Ive owned 4 other Chevy trucks(they were great, too), a Ford and 2 Dodges (didnt keep them long!)This is by far the coolest looking Avalanche out there-my opinion. scores a solid 10!
