This Year's Model Updates:

For the old 1.8T GTI, the VR6 style has been dropped and more features, including 17-inch wheels and stability control, are now standard. Starting in the late spring of 2006, the 1.8T Volkswagen GTI will be slowly phased out in favor of a fully redesigned model. As before, this performance hatchback will be based on the upcoming next-generation Golf. Highlights for the new GTI include increased performance, new styling and more interior room.

Pros:
  • Hatchback utility, upscale features and interior design, strong engine and automated manual gearbox of redesigned GTI.
Cons:
  • Higher price than those of its competitors, old GTI lacks oomph.

  • Had Previous VWs and GTIs, Best of All! - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

We traded my wifes 1.8T 5-speed New Beetle Convertible 5 speed on a DSG package 2 GTI. I love this car and it does everything I want in a commuter and performance car. Its far more exclusive than the competition (coughcough) as Ive only seen 2 other ones in DFW in the two months that Ive had mine.

  • windshield cracks - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
    By -

This vehicle has had 3 cracked windshields in less than 2 years, and we cant see where anything hit it causing the crack. What we have seen is the crack occurs in an unusual pattern each time, in a 90 degree angle, looking like an "L" shape. The dealership says its a coincidence. We disagree. Even the dealership says they havent seen this pattern of crack before but they deny it has to do with the window shield frame or the installation pattern. We are sick of dealing with this and are worried that this is going to affect our premium for insurance.

  • Best GTI Yet - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

The new Volkswagen 2.0T GTI is the best hatchback and the best sports car in its class. The features that are standard are luxurious compared to other coupes / hatches. Its s DSG gearbox is faster than any manual transmission in the world, and the torque is amazing. The GTI is very quick and handles superbly. This car is absolutely amazing for its price.

  • The Ultimate Car! - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

So far the cars been great. I was specifically looking for a black one with the 18 inch Hufeisen Wheels. It took a couple of days but a dealer found one and gave it to me for its invoice price ($24,000). I didnt get leather because leather stinks in the summer time. I love the performance and look of the car...and the xenon headlights are the Icing on the cake!

  • love, love, love this car! - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

my first 06 GTI was unfortunately a bit of a lemon. i wrote a sad review titled love/hate relationship. we parted ways, and i subsequently drove 4 other vehicles in 9 months, but i couldnt forget the love i had for my GTI. so i gave VW german engineering another chance, and bought another 06 GTI equipped exactly the same as the first. i love this car! it has been totally reliable, required only routine maintenance (and the occasional recall stuff), handled long road trips and daily commutes with ease. its a blast to drive in town and on the highway. im so glad i gave the GTI a 2d chance. im now a VW convert!

This car has an excellent, smooth automstic transmission. The shift paddles provide an instant response. My radio is very good except for the volume limiter. It has good brakes and the car is rock steady at high speeds. All of the buttons are illuminated as is the great rotary moonroof control. It is a hatchback with headroom unlike many I wont mention. There is a wide field of illumination from the headlights. It gets the looks where ever ya go. All for $23.000.

  • Way too many small & stupid problems - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
    By -

I have had so many problems with this car in terms of rattles that its not even funny. In terms of engine, driving, fun factor, etc., its great, but when you have to turn your stereo on every single time you drive just so you can drown out the sounds of the rattles, that stinks. I really like the way this car looks, handles and drives, but I have had way too many little problems with this car, noises, quirks, weather strips coming off, to ever want to buy a VW again.

  • Not Again - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

I received a new GTI for graduation. On my first trip to college with less than 3,000 miles, 6 weeks old, the compressor cracked and backed off the engine shredding the belt. This car stranded me 120 miles from home. My parents brought car back to VW to be fixed. The fix lasted five days. My parents attempted to drive up to my college and the compressor shut down again, this time 590 miles from home. My parents brought it back to VW again, now they are saying two weeks at minimum. This car only has 2000 miles on it. The Honda Civic Si is looking really good right now.

I love my GTI. It gets good gas mileage. I usually average about 24 mpg in city/highway driving, and Im not easy on the throttle. Got over 27 mpg going from IL to Dallas TX with an average speed of 70 mph. The power of the 2.0T is amazing. It pulls even from 6th gear, as long as its in boost. I cant wait to get APR Stg 2+. I should be looking at around 240whp and 270wtq or around there. I always find an excuse to take the long way home, this car is addicting. Even with all of the TSBs, a few recalls, etc., I still love my GTI. Good job VW!
