This Year's Model Updates:

For the old 1.8T GTI, the VR6 style has been dropped and more features, including 17-inch wheels and stability control, are now standard. Starting in the late spring of 2006, the 1.8T Volkswagen GTI will be slowly phased out in favor of a fully redesigned model. As before, this performance hatchback will be based on the upcoming next-generation Golf. Highlights for the new GTI include increased performance, new styling and more interior room.

Pros:
  • Hatchback utility, upscale features and interior design, strong engine and automated manual gearbox of redesigned GTI.
Cons:
  • Higher price than those of its competitors, old GTI lacks oomph.

  • Fast and Safe Car - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

The GTI is fun to drive with its 2.0 turbo engine. It has lots of pickup when you need it. Its fuel economy is outstanding. In the city it gets 28-30 mpg, which is higher than it was rated.

This car is great, comfortable, reliable, and FAST! I have done high speeds 6th gear and still had room to go fasterand still felt absolutely solid, and responsive. You can also very frequently bypass gears. Thr leather seats are comfortable and I have not stuck to them which was one reason I was hesatent about buying leather. Overall the GTI is an awesome car, who else puts 10 airbags in there cars for front and REAR passengers? Standard? Not many! VW has thought of everything with this car. Thank you VW!

After three months I am more and more in love with my GTI. I have added a few mods and I am already putting out 255 Hp and 300 lb/tq (with a $450 chip!).

The Volkswagen GTI is a great car, with excellent pickup and standard features that are great. The only thing I considered adding was a moonroof. It comes with electric doors and windows and great litle VW trims inside and out. This car is great looking, it has an amazing honeycomb front grill.

  • Over 40? The GTIs still for you. - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

If you were old enough to own and drive an original GTI in 83 and think youre too old now and should drop more money on an Audi or the like, think again. This car is all grown up like you, but still retains its frugal blend of practicality, performance and sublimer. Sure the ad campaigns are geared for a younger demographic, but dont let that deter you from getting what you really want for such little money. After a terrible day at the office, at least you get to drive home!

As a spare car in our garage, the GTI sees very little mileage (2,000 miles in our 8 months of ownership). Its build quality is exceptional for a vehicle of this price. There are standard features on this car which cost more on cars costing up to 2.5 times as much. It was against my better judgment to buy a 1st year model car, but problems have been minimal. Overall, this car has been a great buy for the money.

I test drove the 2005 Volkswagen GTI and the purchased the 2006 model. There is no comparison between the two. The new GTI is twice the car, its a lot smoother, has no no turbo lag, and runs at lower rpm with its 6-speed manual transmission. It is just a great car!

  • Awesome car, BUT........ - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

This happens to be one of the most fun car to drive. I use it as a daily drive for work. And my commute is usually a 1 1/2hr commute through Boston traffic, and ever since I got this car, the commute is a whole new experience. The DSG is the best transmission i have ever driven. The Bi-Xenons are great, while the fogs adds little to barely noticeable lighting. I love the steering wheel also, and MFD (Multi-Function Display). The only negative things that I have to say about the car is the BUILD, it seems that there are just minor details that aesthetically are unappealing, more minor annoyances but dealable/fixable. Overall, I LOVE THIS CAR!!!!

My 2006 Volkswagen GTI has been great so far. The DSG transmission is a kick in the butt. Thou it is winter here and I cant get a real chance to let it all out, the car seems to handle great even with the all season tires. Come on summer.

  • Speedy Fun - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

This car is super fun to drive. It has the pick up and handling that I want in a sporty little car, but also has the comfort and practicality of being able to go on long road trips. I looked at Mini Coopers and was all set to buy one until I drove this car. It blows the Mini away in interior comfort and space, yet is comparable in performance. Also, the inside quality of the GTI is way better than the Minis which comes off as cheap, plasticy and CRAMMPED. You can actually fit people in the back, pick up groceries, and haul around two 100+ pound dogs in the back, yet always feel like you have the speed, response, and fun of a sports car. Its gas mileage is good too! Buy it...you wont be let down.
