For the old 1.8T GTI, the VR6 style has been dropped and more features, including 17-inch wheels and stability control, are now standard. Starting in the late spring of 2006, the 1.8T Volkswagen GTI will be slowly phased out in favor of a fully redesigned model. As before, this performance hatchback will be based on the upcoming next-generation Golf. Highlights for the new GTI include increased performance, new styling and more interior room.
- Hatchback utility, upscale features and interior design, strong engine and automated manual gearbox of redesigned GTI.
- Higher price than those of its competitors, old GTI lacks oomph.

The GTI is finally back! - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By Sean Spurlock - December 22 - 3:36 amFor any of you who have owned an older GTI like me (less an MKI or MKII), then you probably loved your car, but always felt something was missing. The MKV eliminates any hard feelings from the past! This car drives, handles, looks, and feels the part of a true sport coupe...all the while having the fit and feel of a German car. There is truly no comparison in overall cost-effective driving enjoyment to the new GTI. Japan simply cant match the driver interface and dynamics that the Germans can produce. Hurrah to VW for getting the GTI back on track...figuratively and litterally!

True GTI - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By farhven - November 4 - 1:26 pmThis is the GTI Ive been waiting for. Its design stays true to what this car was suposed to be: fast, fun and funky looking. Ive been into GTIs ever since they came out with their 1991 16V which kicked butt. I love the look of mine with the plaid inserts. The tranny is smooth and the throws are short. Love my metallic gray GTI!

By rj - September 14 - 1:46 pmThe GTI is a great car all around. It has the best transmission ever, DSG, its like a ferrari. It is solid at high speeds, has great brakes, and has plenty of room. This car is a real winner! The GTI is back!

Outstanding - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By zalmoxes - August 30 - 5:20 pmI had a great experience with the dealership. No hassle, they had a profit a had a good deal. This cars 18 rims are nice looking. I love the sunroof and the automatic transmission drives like a $40,000 car. Im 47, guys, and I also have a $45,000 plus Lexus. The responsivness of the GTI is unmatched. My wife is reluctand to say that shes happy with it, but I am. Is my toy, let her drive the Lexus. Fantastic job VW.

A Nice Machine - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By Jack - August 26 - 3:23 amThis car is built like a tank. I didnt realize it until after I bought it, but compared to Japanese cars its a tank. Im not knocking the Japanese cars, but I believe tin would be a good word to describe the outer materials. The car rides amazing, it is very quiet inside. It is a heavy car as well, so you wont feel the hitting. It is good aerodynamically. The engine is very responsive the torque band is very impressive. Its got good power all over the place. Its not a Corvette, but it is a good compromise. The fuel economy is wonderful. I can usually get above 30 mpg out of it. I would no doubt highly recommend this car. It is a great all around vehicle. Insurance isnt bad either. V Dub rocks.

By flipp - August 26 - 1:43 amThis car is sick. I have owned all kinds of cars, the GTI is fun to drive, comfortable, sporty, safe, etc. I commute 16,000 miles a year so the reliability remains to be seen, but initial build is very good. Love this car!!!

WOW! What a Great Little Car - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By Mike - August 3 - 5:43 amComing from a VR6 I was expecting the Turbo engine to be disapointing but that was not the case. The 2.0T engine in my new GTI is the best engine ever! It provides the perfect blend of a VR6 and the 1.8T! It is sporty and luxurious all at once!

My Fast - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By Dennis - July 21 - 11:40 amI traded in a Hummer H2 for this little GTI due to the recent fuel prices. I was only getting 11 mpg city and 15 highway in the H2. Also the H2 only has a 30 gallon tank. It was costing me an additional $300 dollars a month on top of the monthly payment. The GTI gets 24 mpg city and over 30 highway. My fast saves me over $2,000 dollars a year in gas plus I took a loan out for fewer years. My insurance went down as well.

GTI Five Fast and Solid - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By fastbackwards - May 13 - 4:13 amI recently tried all the small cars around, and no kidding, dropped in a VW dealer because they had Acuras, and the Audi A3. I drove the GTI, and it smoked everything. It has great practical space, tighter handling, shorter braking, and is faster. I was in the market for an A3 or similar, but based upon first test drive, and the better fuel efficiency, I bought my GTI on the same day. I got a Black Pack 2 with DVD Nav. Absolutely everything about its performance is perfect, the ergonomics are a 10, handling a 9, Braking a 9.5, it has tons of features, and fit and finish are a 10. But the speakers are rather lackluster. They sound shrill in the mid-range. Of course the DVD NAV is great, but the DVD Nav warning stinks.

Love this Pocket Rocket - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By theo - January 24 - 6:06 amI owned three different vehicles since my last VW which was a 2000 Jetta VR6 and Im glad to be back in a V Dub. My family (me, wife, two little girls) use this as our daily transportation and love it. This car corners and stops very well. Its acceleration is very good too. I was concerned about its fuel efficiency, but Im not anymore. My wife and I took the GTI on a trip soon after we purchased it and got 29 MPG.
