This Year's Model Updates:

For the old 1.8T GTI, the VR6 style has been dropped and more features, including 17-inch wheels and stability control, are now standard. Starting in the late spring of 2006, the 1.8T Volkswagen GTI will be slowly phased out in favor of a fully redesigned model. As before, this performance hatchback will be based on the upcoming next-generation Golf. Highlights for the new GTI include increased performance, new styling and more interior room.

Pros:
  • Hatchback utility, upscale features and interior design, strong engine and automated manual gearbox of redesigned GTI.
Cons:
  • Higher price than those of its competitors, old GTI lacks oomph.

  • Best Car I Ever Owned - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Before I drove small BMWs but grew tired of their narrow interiors (I am 6.6 ft. tall). I was amazed by the GTIs spaciousness even on the back seats. And once driven I was hooked. Perfect steering, enormous power and the most fun to drive gear unit ever (DSG). Plus the GTI omits the shriekness of most other hot hatches.

This is by far the best car I have owned. Its safe, I get about 30-35 mpg on the highway, and the car is quick out of the box. I did have mine chipped by GIAC and I am now in love with this car. The gas mileage is the same and its a blast to drive. Also, I have yet to take it to the dealer for any warranty issues. VW has stepped up their quality big time from previous generations. This car brings me back to my first car which was a 1984 Rabbit GTI.

  • The Black Pearl has Sunk! - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

My vehicle was damaged on delivery, it had a chip in the windshield, scratches in the paint, and bodyside moldings were damaged, but it was one of the last 5A, cloth, non-sunroof (headroom), Black/Black GTIs left, and since I drive a lot, I wanted a fun factor with economy and power. Then the car developed a body flex which turned out to be a bad hinge in the door. Then it developed rattles in the dashboard and now the rotors pulse and vibrate when stopping. It is a cool car, but I am afraid I have to give it back to VW (Lemon Law) just after 7,000 miles. Too bad, the kids loved daddys "Turbo." The dealer staff has been pleasant, its not their fault that this car was made defective.

  • GTI is Here to Stay - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

I absolutely love my GTI. Its nimble, tourqey, and comfortable. I get compliments from everyone! For the price, this car is in a league of its own. I was at first apprehensive about the plaid seats, but they have grown on me. The interior layout and build quality is top notch. And the rear seat is surprisingly roomy, two large adults fit back there with room to spare. My only complaint is that seats need a crank for reclining instead of the knob. Once I turn the ignition and take it on the road I forget about all the bad and simply love taking it fast around corners!

  • Amazing Car - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

This is my second Volkswagen and I didnt think VW was going to be able to make a better car than my 2001 Jetta, but I was so wrong. The new GTI is amazing! It handles like its on rails, it is super quick with almost no turbo lag, and has the best interior ever. The seats are comfy and secure you like you were straped into them with a 4 point harnesses. The xenon lights, that come standard, brighten the road extremely well. The brakes and suspension are amazing. It stops on a dime and you never get the feeling that you arent going to stop in time. The suspension rides so comfortably but handles so well in turns. Honda you better watch out!

  • Awesome car for the Money - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

I had been waiting for this car to hit the US market for 3 years, when it was finally here I bought the first one I could find. 2 months later, I couldnt be any happier about my purchase. This car handles exceptionally well, is super fast, looks great, and fits into just about any parking place too! Its interior is spacious, and well laid out, with nothing goofy or cheap looking. Driving it is truly a thrill, period. Basically it puts a huge grin on my face every time I drive or even think about my GTI. Then when I think about how little I had to spend to get a car that makes me so happy, Im even more thrilled. Kudos VW! Great job, just wish I didnt have to wait so long.

  • 06 MKV GTI is Terrific - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

I love the MKV GTI. After driving Hondas for twenty years I feel like Ive really gotten lucky. I commute about 60 miles a day at typical California speeds and get about 30 MPG. I havent had any serious problems with this car either. The turbo on the GTI is really amazing and gets it going fast with the DSG transmission.

  • Very Nice - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

The Volkswagen GTI is a car that is put together very nicely. Another 60 or 80 horses would have been better. More options would be nice as well. It definitely needs a better stereo.

  • Fantastic - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

This is my fourth VW, and by far the best I have driven to date. It gets excellent gas millage, has tons of torque, has great handling (much better than the MKIV), and has an awesome interior. Do yourself a favor, go test drive one. You will not be disappointed.

  • Might as well buy one - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
    By -

Got a 2006 GTI after my 2004 GTI was destroyed by lightning. I dont like the non-linear response of the turbo, but after two years and 16,000 miles I no longer care. This GTI is more powerful, faster, and much roomier than before. Gets 23mpg in town and the low 30s @ 75mph with cruise. In mkIV GTIs the ESP (traction control) would slam on the brakes at the worst possible time. No longer. VW has transformed ESP into cornering ecstasy. Take a corner too fast, it scrubs off perfectly. Step on the gas in high speed corners, some wheels accelerate and some brake, the car digs in, and away you go. Only a computer can calculate and respond fast enough to do that. Just amazing!
