This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota now offers a slightly decontented "standard" Prius model that lacks cruise control and heated mirrors but in exchange has a significantly lower base price.

Pros:
  • Outstanding fuel economy, low emissions, generous amount of interior space, easy to maneuver in tight spaces, space-age interior design, a lower price for 2008.
Cons:
  • Less powerful and agile than other midsize sedans, a few disappointing interior plastics.

The new Toyota Prius Touring model is the third generation of Hybrid Automobiles. It is the most different car I have owned after nearly 40 years of car ownership. As far as fun, it takes me back to my 1973 Volks Karmann Ghia. As far as fuel economy, not even my 1960 36 HP Volkswagen bug could top the Prius. It makes a game out of saving gas and works like a champ. From my home in central California to Sequoia Natl Park , and return , I averaged 45MPG . That with climbing up to over 7000 ft. elevation, a trip of 302 miles with only 6.7 gallons of gasoline. Two different 650CC motorcycles could not do as well. I was cruising about 60 to 65MPH on the flats .

  • This car is a 10! - 2008 Toyota Prius

What can I say, this car is very roomy inside (if youre a skeptic, go test drive one, you will be pleasantly surprised!), it is reliable, economical and it looks great! I bought it just in time as the price of gas was really beginning to climb and now I am at the gas station once every 3 weeks. It may be a little pricier than other vehicles, but it makes up for it at the pump. Buy this car and become environmentally and financially smart. This car is a 10.

  • Still going at 115,000 miles - 2008 Toyota Prius

I got the extended warranty which was useful as both front bearings needed replacement at 62K. I thought the navigation system would be helpful but it was out of date almost immediately and the cost to update was $75. It was never as good as the gamin or other popular programs at the time. Seems to me this would be something the dealer could offer as a perk. Soon after I got it cell phone navigation became a thing. Never use it. The voice recognition system was useless too. The drivers seat is not as comfortable as it should be and I wish it would go back just one more inch to accommodate my legs. Back seats are roomy enough for road trips. Easily fits 4 adults and luggage. I follow the usual maintenance schedule and have otherwise had no problems with this car. No problems with rust even where Ive scraped it up. It holds an amazing amount of stuff as the rear seats fold down flat. It will fit a twin size mattress in the back. I plan on keeping this thing for a full 10 years then passing it down to my son when hes old enough to drive. Purchased a set of snow tires and rims. It runs great in the snow.

Great to drive by the gas stations. Plenty of zip to go over mountain passes in Colorado.

Gas mileage is down about 10 mpg in the winter, but overall it is a great car. Does great in the snow, roomy inside and comfortable.

  • Very Impressed - 2008 Toyota Prius

I have had the 2008 Package 6 for a little over two weeks and so far, I am very impressed overall. We had to turn in a leased vehicle so the timing was right to get something that made the most sense. After checking out everything out there, my wife and I chose the Prius. Very quiet, fun to drive and see how high you can get the mileage up to, and impressed with the thinking that went in to this car. As we are now seeing oil climbing at a stupid pace, each time I fill up I am reminded of the quality purchase I just made. It is too bad other companies have not been more proactive, like Toyota has been, with this type of technology. The competition has dropped the ball big time!

  • Amphi-prius - 2008 Toyota Prius

Replaced an aging Jeep Wrangler with the Prius, and never looked back ... except to remove the Thule roof rack & install it on the Prius. This way, I can carry a kayak & 2 bikes at once. Hence "Amphi-Prius" Its the most basic model, right off the lot, but light years ahead of the old Jeep. Great Fun! Quiet, smooth, roomy. Terrific A/C. Now that Ive got the technique down, am consistently getting 63 MPG (!) at moderate speeds on secondary roads.

  • We Love Our Prius - 2008 Toyota Prius

Even though the Touring Prius is rated at 42 MPG we get several more MPG on average all the time. Our current average MPG is 45. The hatchback design is perfect for us. My handicap folding mobility scooter fits in the left side of the hatch perfectly. We find the Prius very comfortable on trips, even with 4 adults in the vehicle.

Toyota has made it very easy to make choices with the package numbers on their Prius model. I gave up room space, horsepower, luxury and performance and it was all worth it. My wife is getting one as soon as the lease on her car is up. Its quite an experience that has gotten my friends and my co-workers excited also.

  • Had to have it. - 2008 Toyota Prius

Test drove the Prius and had to have it. The Civic has nothing on this car. So far, I have spent most waking hours thinking about it over the kid that I have on the way.
