This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota now offers a slightly decontented "standard" Prius model that lacks cruise control and heated mirrors but in exchange has a significantly lower base price.

Pros:
  • Outstanding fuel economy, low emissions, generous amount of interior space, easy to maneuver in tight spaces, space-age interior design, a lower price for 2008.
Cons:
  • Less powerful and agile than other midsize sedans, a few disappointing interior plastics.

This is my 4th Prius. Started in 05 and traded every year since (I used to drive Marquis). Trade in value excellent, my mileage usually ranges between 44 - 46 mpg calculating miles driven divided by # of gallons (the display on all 4 Ive owned is a little optimistic). It holds the road great and has enough get up and go when you need it to get on highways, etc. I wish it had a moonroof option but as far as performance - Ill put my Prius up against any other compact car in its class - and alot of intermediate size cars too. Comfortable enough for long trips - but remember this is an "on road" vehicle. Cant pull itself out of much of anything but on asphalt its the best in the world.

  • A few quirks worth the sacrifice - 2008 Toyota Prius

Ive had my Prius for 3 months now and have decided it was the right purchase for me. I do a lot of driving for work, especially over the mountains, so I have really pushed it to its limits. The Prius does great in town: mileage is over 50mpg and it out-performs most every other car on the interstate. On my drives across the Rockies on I-70 I usually get 44mpg average. The engine starts to "whine" when Ive been going straight uphill for too long and the battery has emptied. I am 59" and the car is perfectly sized for me, but my husband is 61" and its tight for him. All in all, the sacrifices are worth it for me; I LOVE the great environmental profile and the low cost at the pump!

I just love my Prius! I really dont have a single complaint. I deliberated whether I would wait another year before trying a 2009 but I couldnt. Mileage is great, great room, great for long trips.

  • Making the Adjustment - 2008 Toyota Prius

Researched fully, then bought. On the 30-mile ride home felt sure it was a mistake. Weird feeling, strange steering and braking, odd visibility, felt every bump in road. Gloom. Other cars in family are Expedition, Explorer, Focus, all recent models. Two days later I cant stand to drive them anymore! Point is, the Prius takes a bit of adjustment, like a new style of clothing you are not sure is you. V8 love is replaced with unexpected delight in the hybrid system. Controls, shifter, keyless entry are take 48 hours to get to know. I am really surprised how much fun this thing is to drive. I wish I knew whether the Touring suspension tweaks are worth it - drive the standard too.

  • Our 2nd Prius! - 2008 Toyota Prius

We just got our second Prius, an 08. The first one is an 05. We liked the 05 well enough to get a second one. Its a nice car, good space inside, flexible with the different configuration options of the seats, big enough to carry 3 other adults to lunch, plenty of pick up, nice interior, quiet ride. Overall, Im very pleased (although Ive only had it for one day!).

We have about 1K on our package 2 and my wife and I are very pleased. Purchased for the mileage (abt 46 so far) but also pleased with room, comfort, how quiet it is and the smooth ride.

  • space port I have arrived - 2008 Toyota Prius

Wow! What a great car! I got the #2pkg and added after market leather and sunroof. Got the new dark blue new for 2008 and boy do I turn heads on the road. It looks and feels great. Love the feeling of the cockpit. Backup camera is a must! I have also changed my style of driving to fully optimize the fuel. It is super smooth and incredibly quiet. I look forward to having to drive somewhere just so that I can drive my new space craft... ok car.

  • Experience of a former Corolla Driver - 2008 Toyota Prius

I have been averaging 50 MPG in my first week of ownership, driving on the Grand Parkway/I-10/Beltway 8. The car does not handle as a peppy Corolla, but has more passenger room. The cargo space is not as big as a Corolla, but adequate to haul the weekly groceries. Be sure to buy "vehicle shield" or the road noise will get to you. As a techno-geek, I enjoy driving the car.

Comfortable car which performs well. Repair costs were minimal, and fuel economy is great.

  • All-round Excellent car - 2008 Toyota Prius

Aside from some shabby fabric on the center console, this has been a superb car. Ive had maybe one repair done, and it was some routine thing they spotted at the 100k check-up. I get 48.5 mpg year round. Its quiet, and accelerates strongly at freeway speeds, like 45-75. Lots and lots of cargo space and catch-all storage areas. Only drawback? In 2008 they didnt have USB or iPod interfaces to the radio. Theres also a design flaw with the traction control (which cannot be disabled) where when you stop at a stop sign and the pavement is the least but slick with water, ice or gravel the car may move haltingly when you press the gas. This is very bad, but you learn not to try and dart into traffic except in dry weather. Otherwise the performance and handling is fine. 2016 UPDATE: One of the hybrid battery cells failed at 130K miles. The repair cost $1800 from an independent repair shop which offered a 3-yr warranty. The car is running perfectly again. I have added leather steering wheel and armrest covers to fix the decaying originals. The actual seats are holding up fine, its just the armrests and center console cover they arent up to snuff. 2017 UPDATE: Battery failed again, repaired under warranty. But at 139K miles I needed a new daily driver. Just bought a 2017 Chevy Volt. Cargo capacity with seats down is comparable to the Prius. Rear seat headroom, not so good. But with 50 miles EV range the Volt seems a noble successor to the Prius. EV performance of the Volt is outstanding. Much more acceleration than the Prius.
