This Year's Model Updates:

One of America's favorite cars is all new this year. Design goals for the 2002 Toyota Camry included larger interior packaging, reduced noise, more advanced safety features, better driving dynamics and, of course, a new standard of value.

Pros:
  • Roomy, powerful engines, plenty of safety and luxury features.
Cons:
  • High prices for XLE, costly premium features.

  • Uncomfortable Front Seats - 2002 Toyota Camry

Im wondering if anyone else has a problem with there front seats being uncomfortable. The seam in the middle of the back has a wire behind it, its like leaning back with a 1 inch rope behind your back. Its very uncomfortable !

"Salsa Red Pearl" 2002 Camry LE, 2.4L, first year that it came with a timing chain, not a timing belt) and automatic transmission. Im 61 and fit comfortably. In daily commute driving, I average 28.5 mpg combined hwy/city on 87 octane gas (Melbourne, FL), and recently got 36 mpg Hwy between Warner Robbins GA and Melbourne FL (I strictly observe the 70 MPH speed limit). Some Camry years are known for leaking valve guide seals at about 70K miles - this one is no exception. Valvolines high mileage oil has virtually eliminated this after about 4,000 miles use though. Lastly, this is one of the easiest cars to drive that I have ever driven - steering & pedals require very little effort.

  • A little worried - 2002 Toyota Camry

Good looking, lots of extras, fun to drive and really good acceleration. Great stereo system and wonderful navigation system. Had to replace the transmission at 40000. It still jerks between 45-50mph.

  • Take Notes GM - 2002 Toyota Camry

I bought the car with 80k on it and I have 107k miles on it now after just over a year. Had no problems. Ive done only standard maintenance (oil change, tires, etc) and changed the front brake pads. Its my 2nd Toyota car after a long line of GM failure cars that I purchased. GM Take note, this is how you get customers, if you build a reliable vehicle, they will come. If youre looking for a fun car to drive you will not get it with this car. It has no bells and whistles. You get 100% reliability and that is it.

  • Great car - 2002 Toyota Camry

All and all, this is an excellent car. I get between 27 and 32 mpg with mine, it has a smooth ride, good pickup, great sound system and is extremely reliable. I already have over 150K on it and literally only put about $150 per year into repairs. This has got to be one of the best vehicles I have ever had. Very economical, attractive and comfortable. Love it!

  • Definition of reliability - 2002 Toyota Camry

Comfort in the Camry rates like a full size car. The performance of the 4 cyl. was so good, I argued with the saleman that the car had a 6 cyl. The Camry sets higher than other cars in its class making traffic driving easier and more relaxing. My disappointments in the Camry are the fuel economy and the handling. The Camry should get a little better gas mileage and the handling is a little sluggish and unbalanced. This can be corrected with the 16" wheels instead of the 15s. Fuel economy is checked EVERY fill up ranging from 23.8 to 27.9 MPG, falling short of the advertised MPG. Overall, I have been much happier with the Camry than I expected, after being a devoted Honda Accord owner.

  • satisfied, but would consider others, too - 2002 Toyota Camry

I got what I expected, reliability. I do not think the brakes are as good as my 1992 Camry. Front seats are not deep enough. Head rests do not fit a short person! Some plastic interior pieces are cheap. I like not having to have headlights on.

  • just ok, not great - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

The car is OK if you like 4 door sedans. Dont buy it for the value though, it doesnt hold any. The road noise is a little too much on the highway but handles OK. My Dodge truck is a lot quieter. Watch out for the dealers though, we found they are the biggest liars and wont buy another Toyota for that reason.

  • Good & Bad - 2002 Toyota Camry

The overall design is fairly decent, however, the interior of my Camry has flaws. First of all, the radio has been replaced twice (its on the third one!), the console drink holder has broken and the brake pedal makes intermittent noise. The ride is very smooth and quite and the back seat is comfortable for evenings out with guests. Great turning radius and easy to drive. If Toyota can just get the interior problems corrected I would be overjoyed with the car.

  • Good, reliable car, but some annoyances - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

Overall, very happy with the car. I am impressed with power and speed. Handling at higher speeds is ok (not as good as European cars like the Passat). I really like the interior - very roomy and comfortable. The engine is very quiet. The trunk is huge, and rear seats totally fold down, so I can put anything I want to in this car. Lots of minor complaints. I experience squeaking and occasionally rattling noises. Visibility out the back is not great - big blind spots caused by frame and rear spoiler. I have also experienced sudden jerking at 40-50 MPH from the automatic transmission when you let off the gas (I noticed this in someone elses review as well).
