This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, all Imprezas sport revised front and rear fascias -- gone are the oddball circular headlamps in favor of a more mainstream wedge-shaped design. In addition, all models get upgraded suspension struts (to improve ride quality and steering response), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, a collapsible pedal system, revised gauges and a new stereo faceplate. The WRX and Outback Sport receive projector beam foglights. Inside, WRX models have new sport seats, a central tachometer and darker gray faux metal accents. The TS wagon, Outback Sport and RS sedan add an in-glass antenna, active front head restraints, central power door lock switch and multireflector halogen headlights. Further, the TS now has four-wheel disc brakes. The RS sedan's keyless entry system now has an audible confirmation feature, and keyless entry is now standard on the TS. Finally, the WRX sedan is now available with a Premium Package that includes a sunroof, trunk spoiler, heated mirrors, heated front seats and a wiper de-icer.

Pros:
  • A stout 227 horsepower in the WRX, all-wheel-drive grip, a variety of sedans and wagons to choose from, fun to drive.
Cons:
  • Often pricey when compared to its competition, tight rear quarters.

  • Good car with some flaws - 2004 Subaru Impreza

I bought it because I wanted something practical (wagon), safe (AWD), fun to drive (manual, turbo), reliable (made in Japan) and reasonably priced (slightly over $21K). I have owned the car for almost 3 years (33K miles). Overall it has been a pleasant experience. Fuel economy is decent (on average about 26 mpg). The car is kind of sluggish off the line tough (turbo lag), and even once the turbo kicks in it does not appear to deliver advertised acceleration. My major gripes pertain to the gear box and paint quality. First I got grinding while shifting into the 5th gear. Now I am getting occasional grind while shifting into the 1st. Paint is very week - millions of chips on the hood and fenders.

  • Sleeper Wagon, able and quick - 2004 Subaru Impreza

The engine, once in the power band, is raw power, serious, and breathless. The boxer flat-four gives a unique engine sound reminiscent of the traditional Porsche 911. With AWD, handling is phenomenal. Performance outperforms price and other cars in similar price range. In fact, the performance rivals that of cars priced far higher! Overall, for the price of such a playful, demonic little sport wagon, I am extremely happy with the purchase. Highly recommended for those wanting a genuinely high- performing sports car with the skill to do the tasks of small SUVs!

  • Wipe that grin off my face! - 2004 Subaru Impreza

2 years in the Forester started me off. But my new 2004 TS has completed my journey. Dry city conditions are met with a torque to weight ratio that bridges the gap between a smooth Sunday drive and tight sporty sortie - your choice. The low end torque and smooth, short throw shifter combo will satisfy the technical pilot in us all while the firm suspension and boxer style engine is responsive yet offers a comfortable ride. Now for the Quebec winters... OMG snow, please dont go. Subaru (AWD) winter confidence is addictive, fun, predictable and why I got a Subaru.

well its a great midlife crisis car !! remains me of my 66 shelby gt350. fast, not very good for long trips and lots of fun when the young guys in hondas pull alond side. classy silver paint and styling. for 32k wheres the floor mats and atleast a cheap radio.

This car will probably be the funnest car to drive becuase of its power and stability. It will out run any car in the $30,000 range, no other car can touch this one in that range period.

  • Intial Review, I love my new Suby! - 2004 Subaru Impreza

Just bought this car, will follow up review in about 10,000 miles for an update. After a long and frustrating search, someone suggested this car, and its perfect for me! Young and sporty, reliable, and has plenty of room (was trying to get away from SUVS). All wheel drive will be great in Michigan!

  • Cheap, reliable AWD - 2004 Subaru Impreza

Its hard to say anything negative about this car given the number of features that came for a pretty low price. Its amazingly reliable and seems to run on rails in the rain. Snow performance isnt bad, either. Wish fuel economy were a bit better, but the AWD takes a (worthwhile) toll. Could be quieter but, again, its an inexpensive vehicle.

  • Still Breaking In - 2004 Subaru Impreza

This car has a lot of power. That is probably the selling point for all buyers. I only have 900 miles on it and Im currently getting around 16 miles per gallon which is still horrible. When the optional STi short shifter was brand new it was VERY notchy and hard to shift but its improving. The lock on my trunk doesnt always unlock itself when i use the alarm and this is becoming very anoying. Besides that the car is a overall good buy and Im satifyed. Im glad I chose this over RSX Type-S.

  • Big bang for the buck - 2004 Subaru Impreza

Having owned a 97 Supra Turbo I am blown away by the performance of this car. 4 cylinders, 300bhp and 300lbs of torque above 3000 rpm! I thoroughly recommend this car. For the money, you wont find better and that includes the Evo, which - while quicker - does not provide the all-round performance of the STi. Bad news? Expect to pay a premium over MSRP until supply catches up with demand

  • Solid Car for your money - 2004 Subaru Impreza

One of my friends got one a WRX in 03 and Ive loved them ever since. I got an 04 in late 05 and absolutely love it. It was very reasonably priced and performed above what i expected. Slight turbo lag but that comes with about any turbo car, but once it kicks in its gone. Handles incredibly well and looks better than any of its direct competitors such as the SRT-4 or GTI. Very very good car all around, and the AWD is unreal. Went straight up a snow covered hill without so much as a slip.
