This Year's Model Updates:

Diesel fans, rejoice! After years of waiting, a Mercedes-Benz diesel is once again available in the States, as the E320 CDI joins the lineup. For now, this model is only 45-state certified, meaning that it's unavailable in California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York or Vermont. Beginning in March 2005, the base E320 becomes the E350 with the addition of a 3.5-liter V6 with 51 more horsepower. At the same time, a sport package will be added, which features upgraded suspension tuning and wheels, as well as steering wheel-mounted shift buttons. Complimentary scheduled maintenance program has been dropped for 2005.

Pros:
  • Sleek and dignified design inside and out, pleasing blend of ride and handling, sophisticated safety features, all-wheel drive available on both sedans and wagons.
Cons:
  • More expensive than competitors, confusing control layout, electronically controlled brakes lack progressive feel.

  • One of the BEST - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

This car gets 37 mpg on the highway and 27 in town - better than most light weight hybrids. It drives better than the gas 320. Excellent car!

I have owned numerous Mercedes but nothing come close to the jet-like acceleration of this Super Sedan. I had an 02 CL55, E500, S500, CLK55 but nothing compared to this car, power on demand and handle well in every situation. Sweet car!

the main difficulty is that interior door trim is cloth rather than other more durable and more easier cleaned material. the car is in all other respects outstanding

We bought the new E320 CDI after deciding buying a new car every year was a luxury we could no longer afford. We bought a used 1976 240D in 1999 and had the car for 12 years. It was the most dependable car we ever owned and sold her in 1991 for the down payment for our first house. We always vowed that someday, somehow we would get another Mercedes Diesel and are we glad we waited. This car is amazing truly amazing. Fast, Firm, Quiet, and undeniably a Mercedes. This E320CDI is really a sweet piece of machinery. I have no doubt they sell the 3000 alotment for the US market. I want another one.

  • After first year - BEWARE - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

This is a warning to anyone looking for a 2004 or 2005 E320. It is well known in the auto world about the problems with this model and Mercedes in general right now. It is basically an electronic nightmare. Since January of 2004, I have had the following replaced - rear door lock, instrument cluster (in speedometer), brain for the Dynamic Seats, 2- rain sensors, Command Center/GPS, 6 CD-player, brake issues. All of this in 11 months! It is a beautiful car and rides wonderfully and has some neat extras but you really need to think hard before buying this car. This is my first Mercedes and after paying $57,000 I am at a loss for words. Please take my words to heart - BEWARE.

This auto is great. I drive on the road in sales, it is comfortable, and fun to drive. The pickup is outstanding, not what many think of when looking a a diesel, this one will push you back into the seat. Diesel fuel is not hard to find, one tip, carry a pair of plastic gloves to wear when refueling, keeps the diesel smell off of you and the auto.

  • Even better than I had hoped - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

We have owned a turbodiesel in the past, so we thought we knew what we were getting. We were prepared to accept the trade off of "diesel" acceleration, noise and smell for the higher mileage, durability and understated luxury looks. Even after thoroughly test driving a number of differently equipped versions, and streching for the only totally loaded vehicle we could find, we feel like weve gotten the bargain of the century. This car is quick, powerful and easy to drive. Best of all, everyone does a double-take when they find out it runs on diesel. At first the controls were difficult, but after a short learning curve they have become second nature. We are extremely pleased.

  • Best Decision Ive Ever Made - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

From start to finish, my buying experience was AWESOME! I was a very satisfied Lexus owner (SC300). But when I test drove my E320, there was no way I was going home without the car! I did drive the E500, but didnt feel an appreciable difference between a well-equipped E320 and the more powerful E500. I expected the E500 to be substantially different to justify the price ... but the sales guy and I agreed that the E320 was the best value. Seasoned MB owners will know that the way the car "hugs" you, the smooth acceleration, the smooth downshifting, the responsive engine... gosh, just everything is such a pleasure! Sorry Lexus, but I think your styling is rather dull ... MB rules!

I am so surprised at how much I love this car and how peppy it is. Youd never know it was a diesel. It is smooth and holds the road so well. Mileage runs 35 on the road and 27-30 around town. Better than what the hybrids are projecting for Lexus and Toyota.
