This Year's Model Updates:

Diesel fans, rejoice! After years of waiting, a Mercedes-Benz diesel is once again available in the States, as the E320 CDI joins the lineup. For now, this model is only 45-state certified, meaning that it's unavailable in California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York or Vermont. Beginning in March 2005, the base E320 becomes the E350 with the addition of a 3.5-liter V6 with 51 more horsepower. At the same time, a sport package will be added, which features upgraded suspension tuning and wheels, as well as steering wheel-mounted shift buttons. Complimentary scheduled maintenance program has been dropped for 2005.

Pros:
  • Sleek and dignified design inside and out, pleasing blend of ride and handling, sophisticated safety features, all-wheel drive available on both sedans and wagons.
Cons:
  • More expensive than competitors, confusing control layout, electronically controlled brakes lack progressive feel.

Go for the mechanical beauty of the naturally balanced Inline 6 with the iron block. At 18:1 compression it will outlast subsequent aluminum versions. Use Power Source Diesel Kleen once in a while and keep the injectors clean and lubricated. I have had my 2006 CDI for 145,000 miles and would not part with it EVER. I have driven 1,300 miles in one sitting (several times) and felt great afterwards. MPG is best with the right tires. I had Michelins and could easily get 40 mpg. Switched to other brands and it was a little harder to get that level of MPG. The car is VERY solid and well built. Get clear impact film for the driving lights to protect them from rocks. The rear seat is a little awkward to get out of. The cloth door jambs have worn a bit on the drivers side. Great stability. I upgraded the headlight bulbs to Phillips brightest and it was a great improvement. Suggestion for MBZ, let us adjust the high and low beams individually not as one set. Honestly I would put this against any other car for comfort, performance, efficiency and longevity.

The quality of these cars is not better than a Ford. For $73,000 I would have expected this car to be in the same league as a BMW or Lexus and its not.

  • My first Diesel - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

This car has so many things going for it. The diesel engine so far has been amazing. I averaged 37.5 MPG on a recent trip to Florida. I drove 722 miles on one tank. I like that! That and 0-60 in 6.6 sec. in amazing to me. The car is beautiful in every way. It has a great ride. Recently I have been hearing a whistle in the vent fan. Not sure what that is. It sounds a little more noisy than when I purchased it 4 months ago. I would buy this car again. The only complaint is that Mercedes thinks they know better than we do and automatically turn the recirculate button off when it thinks it should. I press that button a hundred times a day. Its my car, let me decide!

  • I got the lemon - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Nothing but problems since day 2 of ownership. The first 30 days car was in shop for repairs 33% of the time.

Reliable, very comfortable and a lot of engine performance.

  • BMW convert - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

After 31 years of driving BMWs of one type or another, the iDrive and the exterior design forced me to look at this car. Fast, Fast, Fast. I dont know what in the world could ever replace it for me. An improvement would be a manual 6 speed. Its the first auto tranny I have ever owned. If they could ever get that BMW feel, no one would buy a Bimmer. I will look at the M6 when it comes out, but it going to take a lot to pry my white knuckled hands from this steering wheel. An all grown up luxury hot rod.

  • Whats missing from this car? Not much. - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Apart from having a few too many options for being an MB, this car is otherwise perfect. 369 ft/lbs torque at 1800rpm... 0-60 in 6.6 (I timed it twice).. and passing power like the best sports cars Ive driven. All with 37mpg (observed by me). Built like a tank, safest sedan sold in the US (IIHS Study).. Mercedes Benz build quality and materials..

  • Simply the best ! - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

It is amazing how mercedes has coupled the durability and mileage of a diesel platform into a quiet, high performance engine. The Audi, Acura, BMW are all nice but are no match for this vehicle.

  • The Best Ive Had - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Ive had 3 Acuras & they have been very "Tight." No problems at all but my New 320E has been even better! There hasnt been ONE Problem in almost 4000 miles! Very quiet, great power and style. My gas mileage is better than my Acura, getting about 22 mph in the city & about 28 highway!

  • Update on E320 CDI performance and quality - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Love the car when not having problems. Have had four major problems, most electronic, but think I have either a turbo going out or a "reprogramming of the transmission" - quoted from dealer service department. Still do not have their act together on quality. Problems with keyless go, steering wheel up and down feature. Have written Mercedes about quality issue, but have had no reply from them.
