This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

Back in 1996 we had a new Grand Cherokee Limited. Had it for about three years. Traded it in for a truck until when the Libertys came out, we decided to order one. Man! did we ever miss the JEEP quality that goes into these vehicles. Since then, got rid of the truck and are extremely excited to go to our first Camp JEEP this year with our Liberty. Many people ask how we like the Liberty. The answer to that is, I just cant stop talking about it. We had purchased the 4WD Limited in Woodland Brown. We just love it.

I have a BMW with performance tires, so I needed a vehicle to drive in the winter. Purchased this car with about 85k miles on the odometer. I love my Jeep and drive it more than the BMW. Love the driving position, looks and its maneuverability. Very few service complaints. I have never owned a vehicle with so many miles, yet it is still very tight and rattle free. Would consider buying another Liberty like this one with fewer miles if this one ever starts giving me trouble. A great value for a used vehicle.

It is a great looking vehicle for the money. But I have owned for 2 weeks and the dealer has had it for 11 days of those 2 weeks. Bad vibarations and air bag straps had to be replaced. They have changed the tires twice and are now working on replacing drive shaft to rectify vibration. I am now seriously questioning the quality, maybe I should have continued to shop around? It only has 400 miles on it and the dealer has put 300 of those on it trying to fix the problems. It is a thirsty little bugger but it is packed with a lot of options for the dollar. I would recommend if they can solve the quality issues. It built like my 97 wrangler that is for sure!

I love it. It is fun to drive and cute, and has had no mechanical problems, aside from a slight stumble at times. But it will climb and get in and out of anyplace, and looks good doing it. Air and heat work so quickly no matter what the weather. Bad points are: Getting in and out the back doors is a challenge. I would not like to have to use the back seat every day. Gas mileage is not good for in town driving. Add slides in visors/block sun further back like older Grd. Cherokee had. Miss feature of windows able to raise/lower for a few seconds after key is off. Very noisy with windows down. Sounds like a helicopter is hovering over you even at slow speeds.

  • I LIKED IT SO MUCH I BOUGHT TWO - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I test drove most if not all SUV’s under the $30,000.00 range and found the Jeep Liberty to be the best. I purchased a 2003 Liberty Sport in November of 2002 and had my wife pick up it up while I was out of town on a hunting trip. I called her from my tree stand and asked her how she liked her new SUV she exclaimed, “I love it, and you should buy yourself one”. Well in January of 2003 I did just that. Given my purchases, all of my winter concerns disappeared. I will be keeping both our Jeeps for quite some time. Remember, a Jeep by name is still a JEEP, any other SUV by name is just an SUV. I really like my Jeep Liberty its my first SUV and first jeep and it rides very smoothly and handles well. My previous car was a honda del sol and I was nervous about the size and parking with the liberty but come to find out its shorter in length then my wifes toyota camry and it rides better to me then her camry but definitely better than my del sol.

  • suspension problems - 2002 Jeep Liberty

overall the liberty has been very reliabe.the 3.7 V6 pulls really hard if you put your foot into it. the downside is the goodyear wrangler s/r tires very poor choice for 4x4 lousy traction in the wet or snowand the rear suspension. at about 8000 km. the rear started to bottom out the dealer replaced the shocks and said itwas fixed. NOT!!by 10000 km. itwas so bad you couldnt carry apassenger in the back seat. the dealer test drove it said it seemed fine to him. I finaly got the service managerto come for a ride with me. put him in the back seat. he says I may have a problem.

  • The Jeep Tradition lives on. - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I have driven My Liberty for about 4 months and 5000 miles. I love it.No problems what so ever. For an SUV it has a nice ride especially on the Highway. Even on bumpy roads it is not bad. Plenty of room. It performs well. Excellent in snow and ice. Gas mileage is not great but that goes with the territory. The Jeep Tradition lives on.

My Liberty has been a terrific car. No problems in first 15,000 miles. I have it serviced every 4,000 miles, including tire rotation. My dealer is a five-star dealer and has been most interested in how the customer feels about service.
