This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

On the positive side Ive gotten to know the mechanics at the local dealership much better since this ill- begotten purchase. I have an old Ford Ranger with 155,000 miles which still gives me far fewer problems then this money pit Jeep Liberty. Bearings, transfer case, air conditioner, bearings again, and a new vibration just caused me to drop this junk off again. Thank goodness I purchased an extended warrenty for the first time in my life. Averages only about 15 MPG and for a V6 should do much better.

Good midsize SUV. Perfect for our family of two adults and one 4yr old . Sticks out in Traffic- people seems to have an eye on us.

  • I love my Liberty-just not the color - 2002 Jeep Liberty

My Liberty is white and I wished I could have a red one. Other than that I do not have much to complain about, except the mileage is horrifying. It gets terrible gas mileage.

  • Transmission Failure at 90,000 - 2002 Jeep Liberty

For the first 9+ years the Liberty did very well as far as liability, other than the several recalls. Even the original battery lasted 9 years. Then at about 90,000 it started to have problems. We had to rebuild the transmission at a cost of $3,400. Theres a leak requiring new seals on the rear differential, and the HVAC fan resistor is shot so we only get speeds 3 and 4. After spending so much on the transmission we will go ahead and fix the rest, and try to get another 50,000 out of it but Im not very optimistic. It is fun to drive, the body and interior are like new and it handles well in snow.

  • Yet another Jeep..Yet another good one.. - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Drives well, it is fun, has a distinctive style and most importantly it is comfortable on longer trips too. This jeep is well made and nicely shaped. Looks sturdy and massive, yet has nimble manners. Fuel economy? Well, consider the 210 horses and the tall shape and it is still matches the fuel consumption of my V8 206 HP T-Bird. The interior room is incredible. I am 64" and have plenty of room all around. Comfort is good even in the back. Go and test drive all the SUVs in this class and leave the Liberty for the last, because you will and up with it... Did I mention 5 star collision ratings? Well, let see how this baby holds up on the long run....

  • Love my Liberty!! - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I bought my Liberty brand new in 2002. It has been on two cross-country trips, one of them being a Jeep Jamboree off-roading event. I was the only Liberty out of 125 vehicles! My Liberty handled it all! Ive replaced the battery, replaced the serpentine belt, and had a problem with the AC/heat fan. Other than that, its only been routine maintenance. The mileage isnt the best, but I dont care. Its great in the winter, especially when I head up to Wisconsin in the snow. Its got the comfort of an auto, but with the feel of a truck. I did get truck tires for my Liberty and Im very happy with that purchase. I will NEVER go back to a car!

My first Jeep, love the look, the interior was comfortable, gas mileage average. Tight steering, needs a little more hp in certain situations. Never had more compliments on a car before, in particular the color, salsa red, hot! Drawbacks, 2 big ones, the engine blew at 40,000 miles, never off road with it, oil changed every 3000. Good thing for the warranty, the bill was almost $9000. But the craziest thing about this car, is the battery, I have had 10 or more batteries since I bought it. Every time I take it in for service, they say its normal! Batteries last 12 to 18 months, thats a new one on me. Overall, Im buying a new Jeep, with the skyslider roof!

  • Its a Jeep !! - 2002 Jeep Liberty

The strong points are: lots of power, comfortable and stable ride, great looks, and obviously a great offroader. The weak points are: a gas guzzler, regardless of the fact that it is a 4wd, noisy, a poor sound system, low quality plastic & trim, and weak headlights (yes I adjusted them). For the money, its probably still a bargain. But if you consider the money you could save on gas, especially if youre going to commute, maybe there are other vehicles out there that are a better buy.

This is a refined, fun-to-drive truck! The small turning radius makes it easy to park and get in/out of other tight spaces. The 210 hp helps us blow past road slugs on the highway. Very comfortable interior. We recommend it highly.
