This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

  • Jeep Liberty a real lemon - 2002 Jeep Liberty

My Liberty is 4 years old. We have had nothing but problems. No A/C since July, a condenser problem. Rear differential seal leak, transfer case leak, window regulator went bad, tail light filled up with water and shorted out the electrical system, 2 ball joint recall notices. And the gas mileage? On a good day, 18mpg. NEVER AGAIN. Im going for Kia or Hyundai next vehicle. My 12 year old Honda Civic with 125,000 is a more reliable vehicle.

  • Not for off road - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Interior is built from surprisingly cheap plastics, ergonomics are almost adequate, 4X4 system is “cloned” from previous Jeep models-it’s not doing good job in the snow since system can get easily confused by its anticipated traction, rear viper can be much better, engine is surprisingly good and very much agile, etc. In conclusion, do not take this vehicle serious as far as off road driving-do not believe to advertisements.

  • Never again - 2002 Jeep Liberty

My Liberty is a very handsome vehicle, but they can be handsome all day long and it wont help you much if they are in the shop with something wrong, like tail lights that fill up with water, differential seal leaks, ball joint problems, A/C problems, windows that fail to go up and down all at the tender age of 4. And gas mileage that really stinks. Come on Jeep, you can do better than this.

My ac has also gone in my jeep. I have replaced the speed sensor 2 times. I got into an accident last march and I barely slid and then tried to steer into the correct line and lost control and man can i tell you the jeep can roll. It is not a good vehicle to have!

  • Yuck - 2002 Jeep Liberty

On the positive side Ive gotten to know the mechanics at the local dealership much better since this ill- begotten purchase. I have an old Ford Ranger with 155,000 miles which still gives me far fewer problems then this money pit Jeep Liberty. Bearings, transfer case, air conditioner, bearings again, and a new vibration just caused me to drop this junk off again. Thank goodness I purchased an extended warrenty for the first time in my life. Averages only about 15 MPG and for a V6 should do much better.

  • Speed Sensor Defect - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I had good luck with my Jeep Liberty for the first year that I owned it, but a year later the speed sensor went bad and I had it fixed. Four-five months later it went bad again-had it repaired. Four months later, bad again. At this time took it to manufacturing dealership for repair. $256 later and the following day, it went bad again!! I keep being told this is not normal on these models so maybe I am lucky enough to have gotten one with a manufacturing defect. It is pretty bad on gas mileage and cant wait to get a different vehicle. I was actually on my way to look at one, hoping to get good trade in value on Jeep when sensor went bad again. At 85,000 miles now.

  • Jeep Engine Failures due to Valve Seats - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

major problem with the valve seat coming off and damaging my Jeep Liberty engine. We purchased the car new and have continually provided maintenance on the vehicle at your dealerships. What is upsetting is the lack of interest now from your customer relations department except for your local dealership who has been supportive, on what has occurred. This is a safety issue and this problem is a manufacturer defect . This incident could have caused my daughter to have an accident since she was driving this car as a high school senior. I will take

  • Ticked Off! - 2002 Jeep Liberty

As soon as I drove it off the lot, a sensor light came on. I turned around and brought it back. The dealer fixed it without any problems. A few hours later, the same problem happend. The sensor light came on. I took it in and the dealer fixed it. The next day I started to have suspension problems. I took it back to the dealership and they fixed it. Three hours later. By the end of the following week, it would not start. I had it towed to the dealership and they said it was the spark plugs. Ten days, 342 miles and 4 trips back to the dealer, I drove across the street to the Ford dealership and traded my Liberty for an Escape.

  • How quickly can you get rid of a Jeep? - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I loved my Jeep up until about 6 months ago. It is the cutest small SUV out there and when I first saw it I just had to have it. Then about a couple of months ago a lot of things started going wrong. Taillight (although not a big deal), then the catalytic converter, then the window regulator in the rear passenger window broke, and finally the icing to the cake, the AC is now broken at the beginning of a hot summer. Ive also had the battery replaced because it became corroded. My outlets and rear wiper started not working and it revs for odd reasons that they "cant figure out". Total gas guzzler as well. Im trying to get rid of this thing fast, but no one is biting for the obvious reasons.

  • Please research! Dangerous vehicle. - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

This vehicle hydroplanes in the rain. This vehicle is too light. Doors jam. CD oplayer works at random. Hazard lights work at random. Very poor gas mileage. Too small for a man to drive. Trunk has to be pulled twice to open. While my vehicle was built prior to change of specs in March of 2002, I dont feel the vehicle is safe and am doing my best to get out of it. Unfortunately Chryslers Customer Care Department couldnt care less if I die in a rain storm.
