This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

  • Never again - 2002 Jeep Liberty

My Liberty is a very handsome vehicle, but they can be handsome all day long and it wont help you much if they are in the shop with something wrong, like tail lights that fill up with water, differential seal leaks, ball joint problems, A/C problems, windows that fail to go up and down all at the tender age of 4. And gas mileage that really stinks. Come on Jeep, you can do better than this.

  • Liberty is a great upgrade vs Cherokee - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I traded my 00 Cherokee Sport in for a 02 Liberty Limited Edition. It is much more comfortable all around and the rear seat 60/40 fold down function is great. There is less room behind the back seat, but the spare tire on the tailgate frees up some of the lost space. The Liberty is a little bit slower off the line that the Cherokee, but the engine is smooth and adequately powerful, not to mention much quieter. The on-road ride of the Liberty is great and the interior fit- and-finish is better than anything in its class. The range of the Liberty is less than the Cherokee as the tank is smaller (18.5 gal vs 20 gal) and the mileage seems a bit poorer.

Good-looking truck and easy to drive. Lousy gas mileage and not comfortable for a six-foot male. However, my 16 year-old enjoys driving it around town. Fun to drive.

  • I want another Grand Cherokee! - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Around town, the Liberty rides quiet and smooth. It has good brakes and heats up quickly. Pickup is okay. On the downside, this vehicle is very thirsty. I havent been able to get better than 16mpg. With that kind of poor mileage, I should be driving a V8. The leather seats are of lesse quality, and they dont support my legs at all (Im 62"). Driving my Liberty at highway speeds does not inspire much confidence. Also, the interior glass fogs too easily.

In my experience of 2 days with this vehicle..I love it..and cant wait to go to a Jamboree this summer and get it dirty. The ride is a lot better than I ever expected a Jeep to have. The interior is very comfortable and roomy. Has plenty of passing power and is actually very quiet at speed on the highway.

Not too much to say, other than Ill never buy another Chrysler product again. It only took 102,000 miles and the engine is blown. I was quoted $3,500 to replace it with a junkyard engine with 50k miles on it. I bought a used one with 400 miles on it and had installed by my brother (who is a service tech). My final cost was $1,200. It will be put up for sale immediately before something else goes wrong. The gas mileage is terrible for a six cylinder. Im lucky if I get 17 mpg on the highway. Never again. Ill be buying imports for the rest of my life.

Right off of the sales lot the head lights low beams were not working. Its been back at the service dept for 2 days now and waiting for a new "Body Control Module" computer. The dealer gave us a "loaner" Liberty to drive till we get our car back. Other than that it seems to be a great car and very fun to drive.

  • Best Midsize 4wd - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Just picked up my Bright silver Jeep Liberty Sport(cherokee in Australia) 2 weeks ago. I absolutely love it! Power, comfort and great 4x4 setup. Destroys ravs, crv, tribute, escape by a mile. If youre looking for a Mid size 4wd that can take the punishement, tow a 1500kg boat like a piece of cake and handle youre day to day duties with ease then look no further.

  • Better than I expected - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I previously owned a CJ7 and it was probably the most unreliable vehicle Ive ever come in contact with. That was then, this is now, and what a difference! I looked at the Toyota RAV4 but it is underpowered. Daimler/Chrysler has really taken Jeep quality to the next level. Id highly recommend this vehicle for anyone thinking of a small to mid-size SUV. It truely is the only one in its class that you can take off road!

Very solid. Much higher build quality than any of the Cherokees weve owned. No squeaks, no rattles. Absolutely bulletproof so far.
