This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

  • Lovin Every Minute Of It - 2002 Jeep Liberty

My Liberty is the first Jeep that Ive owned and it has far exceeded my expectataion on quality and driveability. My only foray into the world off roading has been on some logging roads in Colorado, but the Liberty handled it with ease and provided me the confidence that I could get out of anything I happened into. I love sitting up high, above the traffic. I have owned a Rodeo and a KIA Sportage. The Jeep is superior in fit and finish to both and looks a damn sight better to boot. My only complaint has been the gas mileage. Hiway mileage has been in the 18-20 range,(at 70-75mph), but around town I get 13-15. Dismal...

  • all kinds of trouble - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Bought my Liberty new and enjoyed it for first six months or so despite the design that makes it sound like a helicopter with windows open. Since then have had repeated electric problems -- dome light short, power window short, cd player quit working. The final straw is an automatic transmission that had to be rebuilt at only 50,000 miles with no abnormal driving conditions. The dealer was not helpful with this. Because of all of these issues, I wont purchase another Jeep product.

This Jeep is my 3rd and by far the best. It has plenty of power and a nice ride. The only complaint is the sound system is weak.

  • GREAT VEHICLE - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I have had my Liberty for almost 4 years now and I have really enjoyed it. Its been great, Ive had no major issues with the vehicle at all. I purchased it used and I have been very pleased, this had been my first used car purchase ever so I was a bit leery at first. Im very satisfied with my choice.

  • Great small SUV - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I love my Liberty! This a all around great SUV with good looks inside and out, strong engine, solid feel, and perfect size. Compared to other vehicles in its class it is the best by far. No mechanical problems to date. For its weight of 4000 (read solid feel), it handles and performs well when needed, great for short trips to the mall (easy parking) or long camping trips fully loaded up.

Gas, Gas, Gas. It likes to drink. That is the only negative feature. I have a hard time not turning down every dirt road just to have a reason to go 4-wheeling.

  • It pays to do your homework - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I did countless hours of research on the internet. Having never bought a "new" car before, I wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting into. I just about bought a Ford Escape, but then test drove the Jeep Liberty. Best move I ever made. After driving the Liberty, there was no comparison between the two. The Escapes interior and overall build quality was dismal compared to the Liberty. The build quality of the Liberty seems more akin to the likes of a Mercedes or Lexus (Its that good). Fun to drive and handles great for an SUV. Would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone considering a small SUV.

  • so far so good - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Vehicle currently has 5500 no problems. great ride, good power, fun to drive, great interior design. Avergae gas mileage so far about 16-17 highway and city.

  • My Big Investment - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I live on a mountain top and the road is almost "off road." Ive had Subarus, but wanted something different. Fell in love with the Liberty - Ltd edition. Asked perfect strangers. I knew the gas mileage was poor, but didnt know how poor. I drive 200 miles a day, so it mounts up. The interior is wearing quite well, dash is conveniently laid out. I have the moon roof and enjoy that.
