This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

  • MY ANYTHING VEHICLE - 2002 Jeep Liberty

WOW! I never realized I could have a car seat in the back and still feel like I can go off roading! Seriously, the Liberty has been a lot of fun to drive so far. I took it off road once for some very casual riding and could tell I was not stretching its legs at all. I am confident that this will be a great all terain vehicle when needed. The only drawback against this vehicle could be gas mileage, but on my highway driving I have been getting almost 25 mpg. That beats the sticker disclosure by 5 mpg! I have gotten a ton of comments on its sharp looks. Everyone is stopping and looking! I love it!

Was great til 3 yrs later, even though we keep up on all maintenance on it. It started as problems with the engine light on, then started running hard and blowing blue smoke out the exhaust. The smog place gave us a report back with over 10 codes that was causing it to fail! We brought it to several mechanics and all agreed the engine was bad. Luckily I got in inheritance and we were able to pay 8,000 to put a rebuilt engine and some other minor parts in otherwise wed have had to let it sit while we paid it off then junked it, and now the oil light still comes one even thought its not loosing oil pressure. Turns out its an electrical problem. My opinion, dont get a liberty. MPG also stinks.

I own a black Liberty Sport 3.7l 4x4 version of the Jeep . Its got real decent power, but isnt going to keep up with,. say a Northstar v-8 Caddy. High range power; needs about 3.5 feet of snow to stop it. Heavy suv - 5600 lbs. Very capable off roading experiences in the mountains. **Perfect little suv if gas goes down.**

My 2002 Jeep Liberty is a great family vehicle - we can pull our camper or boat - a pig on gas but at 2200000 km it has given NO PROBLEMS - except a few recalls we never received because of resales - balljoint.... I know hear a loud "ping" sound when the Jeep idles after driving... anyone heard this before....

  • Get Your Own!!!!! - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I wont let my wife drive this vehicle. Im afraid she wont want to drive her car anymore, its that good. This is the best small/mid-size SUV out there. The CRV, Rav-4, Escape are merely glorified station wagons compared to this vehicle. If you prefer the former to the latter, stay away from this Jeep. If you want the real deal in an SUV, GET YOUR OWN!!!!!! Fully equipped with leather, ABS, sunroof, and the slickest interior around, it cost only $25738, which is more affordable than my wife. I may get rid of her, but I think Ill keep the Lib!

read up on and test drove most suvs out there. we decides we didnt want a large vehicle yet needed the higher towing rating. drove the liberty with its compact size yet 5,000 lb towing capacity and was very impressed. nice handling very comfortable and loaded with features.

  • The Liberty Lives Up to its Jeep Brand - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I have been driving my Jeep Liberty LE since June of last year. And i have loved it ever since. I have had no problems with it whatsoever. I was in an accident once; i was on a go stright or turn right lane and there was this other car on the turn right only lane... this guy went straight through as I turned right.. then there was a collision. I got out of my jeep and looked at his car, there wre HUGE dentations that ran accross his car (I believe it was a Honda). Then I looked at my jeep. At first glance, it seemed that there was NO damage at all. But on a closer look, there were a few measly scratches that none of my family could even notice. Now thats what i call strong.

  • Nice truck - if quality of build was bet - 2002 Jeep Liberty

So far, my car had the following failures: replaced front left strut tower (when was brand new), replaced radio, replaced rear differential housing, replaced fuel pump, 4-5 recalls. This car has only 40,000 miles, and most of the fixes done when it was new. I have never encountered such low build quality. Vehicle design is strudy, but mechanical parts start failing one after the other. I am about to sell this car, and get myself a nice Toyota pickup. Just tired of visiting the Jeep dealership...

  • Amazing vehicle - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Ive had this vehicle since August of 2003 and can only say its INCREDIBLE. Ive only had minor problems with it, a couple sensors that cost me about $35 each ( using my own CODE reader I got on ebay for $10 and finding the problem myself ) and installed in myself minutes. Fan belt started going at 19000, replaced free. Replaced muffler and front brakes so far at 100,000 and did ALL maintenance at the proper time. Doing this has kept it MINT, engine is almost new looking also as very little dirt gets in there. Since I installed a Hydrogen system ( 3 month process ) Im getting about 5mpg better than before so no reason to get a smaller vehicle for Gas sake. LOVE IT.
