I bought this Freestyle back in March. It was a demo model and it had 12,000 miles on it. Mostly I bought it for the gas mileage it gets compared to what we used to have (Dodge Durango). We are getting rid of it because we have another kid on the way and to add another child seat will make it very tight.

I have owned this vehicle for about a year, and the only problem I have noticed is the lack of power, especially on hills and inclines. The comfort of driving in this vehicle is great for our family of 4 and gives us plenty of room. It is easier to climb in and out of than a SUV or minivan. The 3rd row can be clumsy to get to, especially for adults if needed but no more so than other 6-9 passenger vehicles.

This vehicle is mostly everything I expected. The cargo space is nearly the same as the Explorer I previously owned. The gas mileage, even without the AWD is a bit under what I expected. I get 21mpg mixed driving. The stereo speakers were atrocious and were the first thing I replaced. Quite a surprise in this day and age. I expected better. The engine is a bit under powered and would benefit from a bit more horsepower under the hood.

  • Great family car - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Having tried SUVs and wagons before the Freestyle, I must say that I/we have found the perfect car for our family of 4. Great trunk space (even with 3rd row up), excellent comfort, handling, safety features and overall a very decent look (not your usual soccer mom van). My kids love it, my wife as well. We traveled across country with it once and had ample time to enjoy the ride. It is a terrific car. Regarding the reliability factor, I had a small problem with the AC compressor which was noisy but my local dealer fixed it under warranty. We have never owned anything but Japanese cars before and we are crossing our fingers with our first Ford!

This vehicle is a favorite of my entire family, smooth, quiet and surprising handling. With the 5:41 final drive ratio the 3 liter Duretec gets the job done. Ford is shooting itself in the foot for not promoting this vehicle. Short Term Gain (sell Explorers) vs. Long Term Corporate Health - sell better economy, safety, people ergonomics, etc. The Freestyle is a very pleasant vehicle to own and drive.

  • Gas Mileage - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Good concept, but doesnt live up to my expectations. Gas mileage around town is 14-15 mpg, not much better that the 12 mpg I was getting from my 5.4 Expedition.

This is a very stylish vehicle and everywhere I go people comment on the style and the lines of the vehicle. However, as good looking that the vehicle is, the handling characteristics are awful. On the highway, this vehicle just drifts from side to side and if youre not careful and look away from the road, you could find yourself drifting into another lane as fast as you can blink. When you correct for the drifting, it then overcompensates and you find yourself drifting in the opposite direction. Trying to keep this vehicle on the road in a straight direction for just a few seconds or so, is almost impossible.

  • Happy with new Limited AWD - 2005 Ford Freestyle
    By -

After shopping quite a few other vehicles, including Highlander, Pilot, Equinox & Sienna, bought a Limited AWD. Was won over by the interior design, overall size and ride quality. After 1000 miles, Im quite happy. The interior is every bit as flexible and comfortable as Id hoped, there is more than enough power compared to other vehicles Ive owned, and the overall driving experience is terrific. Mileage is at least equal to the EPA est: I get about 24.5 - 25 on the highway, except in very mountainous terrain, where it drops to about 22.5. Still very good for a car of this size. Very stable and quiet at highway speeds.

The car drives great..The new design works for us having 3 sons under 5 yoa..They climb all over it and it holds up great. The controls on the steering wheel are easy to use. The CVT transmission is pretty weird at first, but after getting used to it, it really has some power and passes very good on the interstate at high speed..

I am moving up to this car from a 97 Accord. I see that most other buyers are scaling down from SUVs. To me, my new Freestyle drives like a truck. The suspension is stiff (but OK) and I can feel the weight of the car when turning, although I could take corners at least as fast if no faster then my Accord. I used to drive a Volvo 740 and this Ford seems to be an enlarged replica of that. Controls on dashboard are in the same place etc. Power. When I first drove it it seem with no life at all, and I wanted to give up. My wife got in the drivers seat and she found the power! It takes off slow from a standstill but after that feels very powerful. If you floor it on the freeway the CVT downshifts
