This Year's Model Updates:

The Freestyle is an all-new crossover wagon from Ford. Built on a Volvo platform, it incorporates the Swedish brand's safety and all-wheel-drive technology, while offering six- to seven-passenger seating capacity.

Pros:
  • Truly roomy seating for six passengers, plenty of cargo space, balanced ride and handling characteristics, lengthy list of safety features.
Cons:
  • So-so acceleration, some low-grade interior materials, no stability control or navigation system.

  • Great car - 2005 Ford Freestyle

We have had the car for 2 years and only problem has been the CD player. We are on number 2 now and waiting for 3. The car still looks great, inside has worn well, although it would be nice to have more leather and less vinyl on the seats.

Our Freestyle has been a bit of a disappointment. Ive been a Ford guy for 30 years, but not when it comes to crossover SUVs. With 15mpg in town and 22 highway miles, the fuel economy stinks. The doors sound cheap when you close them and I hate the CVT. On the highway at 70mph the RPMs are way to high for decent fuel economy. And we have to have both rear disc rotor replaced at 10k miles because they wore out and couldnt be turned. Apparently, this is common on the Freestyle and Ford 500. I have 90k on the rotors of a Nissan and only had to turn them once.

  • Be careful with rear brakes - 2005 Ford Freestyle

I had to have the rear brakes replaced on this vehicle at 20,000 miles. I have also read on other forums where people are having to replace them over and over. Ford will not help with this because brakes are only covered for 12,000 miles. If you do not know, rear brakes should not fail at anywhere close to that mileage level. Original tires are also almost shot at 25,000 miles.

At 17,000 miles rear brake pads started to make grooves in rotors with brake wearing uneven. From what Im told the problem is with the brake pads. Ford will not recognize the problem.

Ford came up with an awesome design but they dont have the reliability to support it. I loved my Freestyle initially but after struggling with a number of issues including the door locks (finally fixed under recall), my heated seat going out (no longer under warranty - they wanted $500 to fix it), transmission problems (surging that would not go away and Ford service could never find on the computer) and leaking front seals I finally traded it off for a Buick. I took a beating financially but the transmission was a real concern so I wanted to get rid of it before I had to do major repair work. Bottom line? Great car but I think I got one of the lemons. Not worth $30K!

  • I love it! - 2005 Ford Freestyle

I was looking for a small truck that would seat at least four. I found the Freestyle by accident, saw how many it seated, how the seats fold down so I can still transport bikes for our daily rides and that was it for me. Of course, my kids love the DVD player for long rides.

  • Overall very happy with the Freestyle - 2005 Ford Freestyle

I have had this suv/station wagon for almost 6 months and am very happy with it. It fits my three children with no problem. The interior design is very appealing (although coming out of our Ford Windstar, anything would have looked good to me!) I love the CVT. It drives so smoothly. My only complaint is the handle on the liftgate is awful. I cannot get a good grip on it because it is not deep enough to put my fingers in. No doubt this car is a nice combination of my old Expedition and Windstar all in one with a little sedan feeling incorporated too.

  • too many bugs - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Overall, I love the versatility of the Freestyle. Although, for a $50K vehicle, I am not pleased with having to take it in for service once a month on average. Trouble with leaking lift gate and sun roof. Trouble with door latches last winter (doors will not close) and again this winter because dealership didnt feel need to replace ALL latches under recall. Trouble with brake cables rubbing and heating up (finally fixed) and groaning in front end on tight turns (apparently fixed). Still determining if my real problem is the car or the service at dealership (could we fix it right the FIRST time?).

  • So far so good - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Bought this car used,18 months/30,000 miles 49,000km), so some factory warranty remains. It is fully loaded with all the features on a Limited AWD model. The vehicle has 6 separate bucket seats. Lots of room. Good head clearance. Easy entry front and back. Very comfortable ride. Lots of room in the 3rd pair of seats, which fold down easily when not in use. For cargo, all the seats (except driver) fold down. Holds the road very well, no "Van-sway". Seamless acceleration with the CVT, but a different sound than the usual. Interior is very nicely laid out. Above average sound system. For families who want a Big Wagon that easily seats 6 instead of an SUV, this car is great. Nice winter drive too.

  • Lots to like about this crossover - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Weve hauled just about everything in our Freestyle and never had any issues with power. Perhaps thats due to our driving styles, but generally weve found it to be more than adequate during highway merges, even with 7 adults in the car and all their stuff. Then again, were not expecting to run the a/c full-tilt, have the car packed full, and have top speed immediately available.
