This Year's Model Updates:

The Freestyle is an all-new crossover wagon from Ford. Built on a Volvo platform, it incorporates the Swedish brand's safety and all-wheel-drive technology, while offering six- to seven-passenger seating capacity.

Pros:
  • Truly roomy seating for six passengers, plenty of cargo space, balanced ride and handling characteristics, lengthy list of safety features.
Cons:
  • So-so acceleration, some low-grade interior materials, no stability control or navigation system.

  • Can I trust a Ford car? - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Spend 30k on the Limited and you get *VINYL* seats. The perforated part is leather; the entire 3rd row is vinyl. "Low grade" materials is an accurate description. I hope Ford did not use cheap materials in the drive train. Overall, the driving experience is good--nice handling and braking. The cabin noise could be reduced, but is not too bad. This is a very functional vehicle and handles better than a minivan. We like the car for these reasons, but you have to compromise. The interior quality on other vehicles in this price range, Odyssey for example, is significantly better. I didnt even know that automakers still used vinyl. Also some frustrations with color choices and options.

The first three months and 3400 miles have been a joy. No issues that required a return to dealer. Build quality was perfect. Went from nearly $34,800 on sticker to $29K plus taxes. Took a little time to warm up to CVT. Now I like it. Especially at speed -- no lag in response. Ask for it and the tranny is already pulling; no down shift. More like how a manual feels at speed. Push harder and things change quickly -- RPMs willingly go to 6k with no down shift delay but pulling all the time as the ratios go lower.

We decided to purchase the Freestyle after looking at several different makes and models. After 4 months of ownership, I still marvel at the fantastic design. Its roomy enough for adults yet accessible by children. The Limited model is chock full of all the best standard equipment, and it just gets better when you add options. We specifically chose black interior to avoid the glare issues frequently described on this review site, and have had no problems at all. The lack of seat bolsters is a plus in my opinion, and I cant say enough good about the customizable seating. Ive never wanted to be an SUV or minivan driver, but this interior and exterior design makes it easy.

  • The Peoples Wagon - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Like the VW Bug (the peoples car), the Freestyle is a wagon for the people. I can carry up to 7 and I can flip and fold the seats to hold all kinds of stuff. The deep well behind the 3rd row of seats is perfect to hold groceries and the grill propane tank without flopping around. The interior is spacious and bright with the seats being comfortable in the front and 2nd row. And surprise, at 511" I am able to easily get in and sit in the 3rd row seats without any discomfort. I have found the power of my Freestyle never to lack; it pulls from stops very well and can cruises at any highway speed I choose, and the brakes stop the car well at any speed.

A vehicle that has it almost all together. I really like it over all.

  • Wish we could love the Freestyle! - 2005 Ford Freestyle

We love the look of the Freestyle and are quite pleased with the handling in snow and rain. However, our Freestyle will go in the shop for the second time this year. First time we took it in for repairs the transmission went out at 5000 miles. We were assured that the flaw was corrected when a faulty valve was replaced. We drove it another 20,000 miles and now IF it starts it wont stay running. This problem began about 200 miles ago and is only intermittent which makes it difficult to diagnose. I am hoping against hope that the problem is related to the fuel filter or injectors. I really want to love this vehicle but it has to be more reliable. We are in the market for an extended warranty!

  • My lemon - 2005 Ford Freestyle

I purchased my Freestyle in October of 2004. Dealer changed transmission at 3000 miles, changed power window solenoid, and this car caught on fire at about 9000 miles due to manufacturers defect in charging system. Overall during the nine month and 17,000 miles of driving, my Freestyle spent in the shop over a month, and I was happy when I traded it in for Toyota! Other than this, it is roomy, with great visibility, and great idea for the car, but with very poor quality.

  • Not built with pride - 2005 Ford Freestyle

First, the car was delivered with minor dent damage in 3 places which was repaired. Next, I received a recall for new gas tank fasteners. With less than 2500 miles, it started leaking engine oil. Also developed a "bumping" sound in right rear when hitting even a minor bump. The car is not "Built with Pride" as the window sticker says. I should have stayed with my Japanese products!

  • versatile and fun - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Excellent vehicle in this class. Competent in many different roles and more fun to drive than we expected it to be. Very good handling (18 inch wheels and Pirelli tires) and brakes. Very comfortable and roomy. Mileage better than book - 20-26 mpg. Terrific a/c system, but wish for a pure fresh air vent system.

  • Good Family Vehicle - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Weve had our Freestyle for about 6 months now and love it. It is exactly what we wanted and my wife loves to drive it. We have used it as a daily driver around town and on trips into the mountains, always with great enjoyment. The all wheel drive worked great during our last storm that went through. As for the engine, we knew when we bought it that it wasnt a sports car, but once you get used to the transmission its great.
