This Year's Model Updates:

Four new Focus models debut for 2002: the ZX5 five-door hatchback, the well-equipped ZTW wagon, the sport-tuned SVT hatchback and the Mach Audio ZTS. No matter what Focus you pick in 2002, a power moonroof can now be ordered. The high-end ZTS Sedan loses its standard ABS and crummy fake wood dash trim while gaining a rear spoiler. An in-dash six-disc CD changer is standard on ZX5, ZTS and ZTW but optional on all other Foci except the LX Sedan.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful ergonomics, large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, impressive selection of body configurations and features.
Cons:

  • Nice, dependable (so far) - 2002 Ford Focus

We bought our Focus from a private party who wanted to get out of his Ford lease he had through the family. We couldnt pass up the deal, and bought it, even though we wanted a Civic. Knock on wood...so far its been great. Its roomy, runs great (although it has that little Fordish-tractorish purr), requires little gas, and handles well. My wife is a teacher, and we needed a reliable vehicle. If you are in a similar situation, I highly recommend this car. Trust me, I spent 2 weeks researching all compacts, and this ones got most bang for our buck.

this is a new car, have had it a couple weeks, and find it to be a very good driver, fun, even. Instrument placement is good, stereo w/6cd a no charge bonus. My only negative comment, and caveat to future buyers, is to check the upholstery for bad seam work. Day two, I noticed that the upper back seat back, had a 3 inch defect in the upper corner seaming, i could place three fingers in the hole, so beware of the stitch work. Personally i didnt sign off on the purchase order until the dealer orderred a new seat cover for the rear upper seat. This they did reluctantly, hopefully thats the only gremlin to be found. We like the car very much!

I bought this car new and have had over 12 warranty repairs. Particulary with the right wheel arm. It does not handle well on snow and almost killed me and my children. I have replaced 6 tires and have paid a huge amount of money in rental fees. Thanks alot FORD Not..

  • Fun to drive, but not solidly built. - 2002 Ford Focus

I purchased this car 2 years old, and was blown away by the power and performance of this little gem compared to the Kia Rio that I had just test driven. The handling is superb its just so much fun to drive! The size of the car is really deceiving from the outside. I have moved a 6 ft countertop in this thing! Im a little disappointed with some of the repairs I had to do: O2 sensor, new tires (60K mile warranty, ha!), completely new brakes down to the rotors. It is now in the shop again because the acceleration died last week. The carpet is also pulling away from the trim and the rubber seals around both front doors have cracked and are coming loose. Still, not bad for 6 years old!

The car is junk. In order to vent the car with outside air, you have to open the windows, otherwise you get engine fumes. For a compact/economy car the mileage is terrible. If you are on freeways that travel over 55 miles per hour, the fuel mileage drops exponentially. When you reach sixty miles per hour, the engine just has no extra guts. Not one of Fords better ideas. The Focus basically sucks!!!

Do not buy a focus ztw wagon. I have had nothing but trouble with the engine and transmission, with no help from the dealer. Avoid this car like SARS.

  • A not so Economy Car - 2002 Ford Focus

This is a poorly build car, plain and simple. I have had to replace the ignition switch twice and just finished rebuilding the tranny and theirs only 54000 miles on the car. I could accept that maybe we were unlucky and got a dud, but my brother in law has one and has had similar problems.

  • Not Economical for an Economy Car - 2002 Ford Focus

If you drive very gently, you can attain 32 mpg hwy/18 mpg city. Ford dealership seems to think this normal for this car. This car is not fuel efficient for its class, and I hope to get rid of it as soon as I pay it off. The second time I brought the car in to be repaired for leaking coolant, I was told that this make/model is prone to problems with the cooling system. In 3 yrs Ive had it leaking large amounts of coolant from two different locations at two different times. If you buy this car, avoid getting the "sporty" wheels (I bought it used, so choice was made for me). They are very expensive to replace.

  • Excellent Value & Otherwise - 2002 Ford Focus

Considering the price and class of vehicle it was an excellent choice, would buy it again. Never imagined I could be so pleased with an entry level car. Also happy with my 03 Lincoln LS V8.

  • Great family car - 2002 Ford Focus
    By -

This car is so versatile as a family vehicle. It has as much cargo space as most SUVs and it is far more economical to run. The roof racks and large trunk make any vacation or camping trip a breeze. The ride is quiet yet firm and it is great fun to drive. I am impressed with the general build quality of this vehicle (a definite improvement for Ford). Another plus is the excellent sound system that comes standard and the handy storage bins and cupholders provided.
