This Year's Model Updates:

Four new Focus models debut for 2002: the ZX5 five-door hatchback, the well-equipped ZTW wagon, the sport-tuned SVT hatchback and the Mach Audio ZTS. No matter what Focus you pick in 2002, a power moonroof can now be ordered. The high-end ZTS Sedan loses its standard ABS and crummy fake wood dash trim while gaining a rear spoiler. An in-dash six-disc CD changer is standard on ZX5, ZTS and ZTW but optional on all other Foci except the LX Sedan.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful ergonomics, large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, impressive selection of body configurations and features.

  • Most for the $$ - 2002 Ford Focus

By far the best "bang for the buck". I had seen the car, and went back 2 months later to buy it. Even at MSRP, it would be great, but I got it below invoice, and then lots of rebates on top of that, so for the price, nothing else could even compete. Only had 1 warranty issue so far (the horn), but may take it in to have them investigate a squeek/rattle near the rear hatch. Great utility by being a hatchback. I thought mileage could be better, but on recent highway trip averaged 28 to 30mpg, far above 25mpg EPA highway rating.

  • 2002 Focus SE Sedan - 2002 Ford Focus

I have a 2002 Focus SE sedan with automatic. Its very comfortable, easy to drive, fairly good on gas and the power is sufficient (but could increased for better overtaking ability). It has been reliable with no repairs needed yet. Rear seat access and room is good and a child car seat fits there easily. The trunk is large with lots of space, a low liftover and flat floor. Build quality seems very good. Fairly low noise at highway speeds.

  • Never Again!! - 2002 Ford Focus

Oh boy. Where do I begin with this car. It is by far the WORST car I have ever owned. I bought it for the better gas mileage... ha. My 99 Grand Am with 216K gets better gas mileage and is more reliable. This car has been in the shop for everything it could possibly go for. The motor mounts dont last. Had them replaced 3 times in the past year. New tires like crazy! I was told it is a Focus thing but had 3 sets put on in the past year. The stereo sounds GREAT!!! When it works. The 6 disk has been changed out 4 times. alternator, sway bar, motor mounts, door locks, electrical system, fuel system, you name it. I am sure it has gone wrong. I will NEVER buy a ford again and would NOT recommend it

  • Great on gas, bad in snow. - 2002 Ford Focus
    By -

I had my Focus for one year and put on 15k. I didnt have any mechanical issues at all. The car was great on gas, about 25-36mph, city/highway. The car was unstable at highway speeds in snow even though it had traction control. I crashed the car in snowy conditions and was able to walk away with only 2 small scratches. Id get another one, but wouldnt drive it long distances in poor winter weather.

  • Fun to drive junk - 2002 Ford Focus
    By -

Although the Focus is a fun drive (even the wagon), the image of poor quality is well deserved. At less than 1 year old (15000 miles), the paint has started to flake away on the plastic bumper cover and a short in the wiring left us without any external lights except headlights. Basic servicing is horrible given that the oil filter is on the back side of the engine and impossible to remove without oil dripping on the CV boot, down frame members and all over the floor.

  • Love this little car ! - 2002 Ford Focus

European overtones won us over. Bought lightly used with special rims, suspension, trim, CD. Great on gas. big trunk, good rear cabin space... Fun to drive.

  • Bang for the buck - 2002 Ford Focus

Driven it for 6 years with no major problems. For $14.5k new, it was a great deal. I have the manual transmission and it is a fun car to drive. You wouldnt believe some of the things I have fit into it with all the seats down. I am pretty good about checking the mileage and get 24/28 for city/hw.

  • No Problems Here - 2002 Ford Focus

I got my Focus as my second car, first new car. I fell in love with it from the day I saw it in 99 at an auto show. Finally bought one in 2002 and never looked back. I have nearly 10,000 miles on it now, and not a problem with it. The car has absolutely superb handing, and with the Zetec engine, plenty of power. There is also a growing aftermarket for the car, so if you arent satisfied with handling and power, there are things that can be done. If you are like me, you are thinking about the Focus and the Civic. I chose the Focus because its so original, and everyone drives a civic.

  • Average car with some big goofs - 2002 Ford Focus
    By -

I bought this car used a year ago. I liked the look of the car, the format, and I have heard good things about it from Euro owners. After owning it for a year I have discovered cosmetic problems and handling problems, as well as build problems. The carpeting doesnt match the contour of the body so it is pulling away from the trim, and actually tearing. The rear suspension is dangerous, skipping across bumps instead of absorbing them. There are lots of rattles caused by poorly fit plastics. The transmission is okay, but could shift more smoothly - it seems to be hunting for the right gear sometimes, with reluctance to downshift (you have to punch the pedal)
