This Year's Model Updates:

The big news is the arrival of the A4 Cabriolet, a fetching drop-top version of the A4 sedan. Initially, the company will offer only one drivetrain choice -- front-wheel drive with the 3.0-liter V6 engine and continuously variable transmission. Expect to see a 1.8T version midway through the model year and a 3.0 quattro Cab by October 2003. No word yet on the possibility of a manual transmission. As if this weren't enough, Audi plans to release a coupe version of the A4 in early 2003. The rest of the A4 lineup benefits from equipment upgrades. Leather is now optional on all 1.8T models, as are 12-way power front seats. All 3.0s will come swathed in leather, with more deluxe leather optional. Previous stand-alone options for the 3.0, including xenons and satellite steering wheel controls, have been swept up into the Premium Package. A new cold weather package includes seat heaters and a ski sack, and 17-inch all-season tires are a stand-alone extra.

Pros:
  • Available all-wheel drive, classy interiors laden with amenities, stable handling.
Cons:
  • Price goes up quickly with options, engines a little short on low-end torque.

Purchased 2003 A4 1.8T last month. The turbo lag is very noticeable. Almost had an accident because the Audi hesitated while accelerating from a stop sign. The gears grind when shifted into Drive in the morning. Car has 29,000 miles. Glad I got a CPO vehicle, certified up to 100K miles or 2009. I knew not to expect a flawless vehicle from Audi. I do love the handling and looks of the car. Blk on Blk looks great, with 17 inch wheels. I get a lot of compliments, as Im the only A4 owner in town. If you can spare extra $3K, buy the 3.0. I wish I had.

I wanted a sports sedan with AWD. At the time, the G35x was still a few months away. The 225hp BMW330xi decently optioned was $43,000+. The BMW doesnt have an in-dash 6CD, dual climate control or a compass - garage door opener could be installed "after-market" and it costs $43,000? My 6spd 220hp A43.0Q stickered $39,000, but sold for a lot less. I had one problem with headlight washers - nothing more. Im getting only about 20 mpg, which is pretty poor for this size car. My previous car, a 95 Nissab Maxima easily got near 25 mpg. The interior is beautiful, except for the bizarre set-up with the armrest / brake, and the worst cupholder this side of Yugo. The acceleration could be better, but I love the AWD. The transmission pretty rubbery vs. BMW

Fantastic luxury & comfort features for a car in this price range. My only complaints are lack of power, car is too heavy for a 1.8t engine, and had problems with excessive wind noise above 50 mph from the drivers side door. Latter complaint was somewhat fixed by dealer.

  • Great Looking, But ... - 2003 Audi A4

I purchased a 1998 Audi 1.8 T and almost immediately had problems when the passenger side seat fell off its tracks and the cruise control didnt work. While the problems were resolved, about four years after my ownership bega, I started having serious problems with the car. Last year, less than five years after purchase, I put $3,000 into repairs. Audis may look great -- but be VERY careful of their reliability and upkeep!

  • Fun to drive, when not in the shop... - 2003 Audi A4

I recently purchased a 2003 Audi A4 3.0 because the BMW 330xi was the most comparable car, but was far more expensive and came with less features. Let me say that I LOVE driving my car and even miss it when I take the train into work or if Im on vacation, especially if Im having to drive a poor rental car. However, Ive had it in the shop 3 times now, most recently to change the spark plugs! Apparently, if the car isnt started during a drastic change in temperature, as we often get in Chicago, then the engine could misfire and have to be serviced! This is what the dealer told me and said that most newer luxury cars are like this. Still love the car, but worried over the long haul for reliability.

  • Great Design, Poor Reliability - 2003 Audi A4

I want to love this car, but the manufacturing reliability is quite poor. Ive had numerous electrical problems, with the brake lights, stereo, and fuel injection. There is annoying squeaking noise in the left front suspension. The design and ergonomics of the car are outstanding, but I will never buy another Audi, because I dont trust the car will work for the long-haul and I dont want to have to take into the service department on a monthly basis.

  • Fun to Drive, but Awful Service - 2003 Audi A4
    By -

I spent a great deal of time researching BMWs 330X, Mercedes C Class, and others. In the end, I chose Audi. My 2003 Audi 3.0 is a blast to drive. The car handles well and goes like gang-busters. The interior is well designed and very comfortable. However, in the past year and a half I have had the car in for repairs about a dozen times. Problems include keys that stopped working (3 times), replacement AC compressor, ABS, Airbag and other dash lights showing, drive train out of balance, key fobs that would not lock/unlock the doors, etc. Whats worse, Ive had to take the car back to have DCH either re-do their work on multiple occasions. What a let down!

The best car you can buy for under $30K

  • My 1.8T Quattro - 2003 Audi A4

Great looking exterior. Interior is fine, but 3 series is slightly more luxurious. Love interior lights. Feels like cockpit of a jet fighter. Handles great. Poor lowend torque. Leather feels cheap. Bose stereo isnt anything spectacular. Love spacious interior compared to 3series. Lots of leg room. Center console is a bit wide, knee keeps rubbing against the side and really hurts. Driver seat uncomfortable. Average Audi service. Dont always take care of the issue and loaner policy blows. I spend 30k and when its serviced, I have to drive around in a Ford Escort?!

the car drives well and handling is great but it does need a little more power for the turbo.
