This Year's Model Updates:

The S40 is Volvo's completely new entry-level sedan. Along with its wagon variant, the V40, this car rounds out Volvo's vehicle lineup. Safety, styling and comfort are its main attributes.

Pros:
  • Strong complement of safety features, affordable base price, non-boxy styling.
Cons:
  • No manual transmission, price of car can quickly escalate with optional equipment installed.

  • Dont know what everyone else is driving - 2000 Volvo S40

Ive been reading all these reviews about replacing the brakes and the bulbs and whatnot every month..i have had no problems with my car for all 2 years that ive had it..the only thing that even bothers me a little bit (reliability wise) is that the check engine light comes on when your really low on gas..other than that, i havent had any problems. I do agree with everyone however that the cupholders could have been much better placed.

  • Volvo safe because its in the shop - 2000 Volvo S40

My Volvo S 40 has been in the shop 5 times since I purchased it. First the right light bulb blew out due to a short then the left bulb same reason. Then the rear molding fell off the trunk which caused the trunk to get stuck. One leak in the engines seal, fixed it then another leak in the turbos seal. Plus things keep popping off on the dash. Im also not impress with the ride my pickup rides more comfortable. Some times when the sunroof is opened the wind deflector begins to flutter and makes a terrible noise.

  • 2000 S40 Great Fun/long term - 2000 Volvo S40

There have been many "negative" remarks for this vehicle and model year, but maybe, as my vehicle was an OSD [oversears delivery], somewhat better build quality was initiated into it, I do not know. I never found any problems with my motor mounts. There were the electrical headlight "burnouts", but the TSB[tech servive bulletin] for this problem solved it. An A/C problem was fixed via another TSB. Converting the brake pads and rotors to semimetallic Mintex pads, and Power Slot rotors, reduced significantly the front dust, and greatly added to the OE fantastic stopping power of the EBD/ABS system. My S40 has been exceptionally reliable and dependable! Changed wipers to PIAA brand.

  • Short of Expectations - 2000 Volvo S40

I thought when buying the S40 that I was stepping up to a luxury automobile that would cross over into the service provided etc. I definitely thought wrong. The buying and service experience I had with my second car (an Infiniti) was far more enjoyable than the Volvo experience. Owning my Volvo was a similar experience to my experiences owning a Honda which is not what I thought I was getting into. Probably will not own or lease another Volvo. Looking back I should have gone for the Infiniti G20 instead although the car has been "OK".

  • 152,000 miles and counting - 2000 Volvo S40

hello there Volvo world I bought my new Volvo in Sept 1999...its an S40 2000. It had only 2 miles on it and now I have over 152K! Yes...the only mjor repair was new engine mounts 5-6 years ago and a new alternator in July 2008. Im on my 3rd set of tires. The interior is still mint condtion and runs excellent. I am now obsessed to see how many miles I can get out of this car.

  • New Mom disappointed to give up Volvo - 2000 Volvo S40
    By -

Up until the day I had to put the infant carrier into the backseat, I loved my S40. Its stylish, peppy, and comfortable. Unfortunately, the car is too small to handle a carseat. The front seats have to practically be moved all the way up to accomodate it. My husband feels like hes driving a "go-cart" with the way he squashed in. We did have continuing trouble with the check engine light but a recall has seemed to correct that issue. The radios reception is poor also. I have had it replaced once and this has not cleared up the issue.

  • Shame on Volvo makers - 2000 Volvo S40

This is the worse vehicle purchase of my entire life. the constant visits to the shop, brakes replacement, engine light comes on, noises in the dash. Constant replacment of the seals for oil problems, headlight replacements. being impressed with volvos reputation made me purchase this car, but Volvo has really let consumers down on this model. Save yourself time and money, and move on to a better car purchase. The only great thing is the dealership is very kind they give you a loaner to drive until your vehicle is finish.

  • Is this really a Volvo? - 2000 Volvo S40

Other Volvos Ive owned have been solid cars. Ive been disappointed with the S40. Its noisy on the highway, too small and not solid. It seems a little cheap. The turbo provides a nice boost entering traffic or the highway.

  • Will never buy another Volvo! - 2000 Volvo S40
    By -

Out of the 4 cars I have owned I have had the most trouble with my S40 Volvo. In a 4 yr. period I have paid $8,000 in repair (that includes 1 scheduled maintenance at 80,000 miles but does not include regular oil changes). A few problematic things to mention are shifter broke, radiator hoses, motor mounts catalytic converter, attena stopped working, window stopped working, O2 sensors...the list goes on. I will never buy another Volvo!

  • Solid through and through - 2000 Volvo S40

This is a fun-to-drive car. Very solid vehicle. Best car Ive ever owned. Very responsive turbo; can pass virtually any vehicle on the road at speeds of 60 - 80 mph.
