This Year's Model Updates:

The S40 is Volvo's completely new entry-level sedan. Along with its wagon variant, the V40, this car rounds out Volvo's vehicle lineup. Safety, styling and comfort are its main attributes.

Pros:
  • Strong complement of safety features, affordable base price, non-boxy styling.
Cons:
  • No manual transmission, price of car can quickly escalate with optional equipment installed.

  • Volvo safe because its in the shop - 2000 Volvo S40

My Volvo S 40 has been in the shop 5 times since I purchased it. First the right light bulb blew out due to a short then the left bulb same reason. Then the rear molding fell off the trunk which caused the trunk to get stuck. One leak in the engines seal, fixed it then another leak in the turbos seal. Plus things keep popping off on the dash. Im also not impress with the ride my pickup rides more comfortable. Some times when the sunroof is opened the wind deflector begins to flutter and makes a terrible noise.

  • Is this really a Volvo? - 2000 Volvo S40

Other Volvos Ive owned have been solid cars. Ive been disappointed with the S40. Its noisy on the highway, too small and not solid. It seems a little cheap. The turbo provides a nice boost entering traffic or the highway.

Had to replace rear brakes at 7500miles. Seats small and lack support. Feels like sitting on a bench. A lot of rattles and noises.

Purchased car in 1999, the 1st year model was offered. The car performed well the first 1 1/2 yrs of ownership although we needed 1st of 3 brake jobs at 8,000 mi. In 2001 the car turned into a lemon overnight. Head lamps failed premature. Brake pump failed which was followed up with recall 3 yrs later. The front/rear end started to crack and pop when making turns. As a result the dealership replaced front strut towers and found that eng. mounts were broken. Poping noise in the rear was caused by missing bushings in rear suspension. Dealership said bushings were left out at the factory. The check eng. light has been on more often than not. Im tired of replac

  • Not great, but solid in most ways - 2000 Volvo S40

The S40 is a great way for Volvo to reach a new crowd of drivers, the car is solid, but there are some minor annoyances. Seems as though I have the same likes/issues as most of the others on the list. I have replaced both the front and rear brakes (car only has 31,000 miles), the check engine light comes on/off constantly (its an emissions fault, but does not affect the car in anyway, but would make it difficult to sell if the light came on), and I have replaced the front bulbs 3 times, though the latest set have lasted over a year.

  • Pure Service, not reliable - 2000 Volvo S40

All I have with thia car are just problems, especially brakes.

The car is just unacceptably unreliable, possibly cause its not a true volvo. It performs well enough, with a zippy turbo engine, but the brakes, tires, engine all have been problematic. Nothing lasts as long as it should. The power steering failed on me. Right now im looking at having serious engine repairs. Its leaking oil. Its just unacceptable. stay away from this car, especially at this price.

  • Volvo #4 is The Worst By Far - 2000 Volvo S40
    By -

I have owned four Volvos, ranging from 240DL to a 960 wagon. This 2000 S40 has had so many problems that this is my last Volvo. The red paint comes off on a drying towel after washing. The stereo speakers stopped working. The cabin climate fan just stopped working. What else?: Rattles, check engine light, headlight bulbs, rust forming under hood seam, turn signal malfunctioning, etc. Never again Volvo. Honda, here I come.

  • always in the shop - 2000 Volvo S40

Not counting tires or oil, maintenance costs: 2004 $1621 2003 $2182 2002 $797 Volvos apparently reach 200k miles by replacing everything on them periodically. Has left me stranded twice!

  • Almost a lemon!! - 2000 Volvo S40
    By -

I bought the car because of its touted safety features. Well after almost 3 years Ive had the air bags fixed, replaced the head lamps 3 times and have already changed all the brake pads. The other day the power brakes conked out and now I am getting a thumping noise. The service has been great I just wish I didnt have to take it in all the time. And, after the loss of the brakes I sure dont feel safe anymore.
