Pros:
  • Strong complement of safety features, affordable base price, non-boxy styling.
Cons:
  • No manual transmission, price of car can quickly escalate with optional equipment installed.

This car has an excellent response when speed and acceleration is needed. I have put this car at 137 MPH on Alligator Alley and it could have still kept going a tad more had I not cought up with traffic. Getting to 130 MPH is a breeze. Need a stretch to get to the 137 I put it to. Acceleration is very good. I have left more than 1 BMW 325 asking for a second chance. Response from mid speeds is also superb. The interior is suprisingly comfortable. It looks smaller outside but feels large inside, even in the backseets. It is more roomy than the A4 by far. The trunk is very generous as well. The car has had no problems, just regular service and it has 56,000 miles. Best car in its league.

This car has been nothing but trouble since day one. Both brakes had to be replaced after one year. Struts were replaced, windows dont work, squeaky roof/sunroof. Im in for repairs once per month. Volvo refused to admit there is a problem and will NOT assist me in getting me out of this lease. I have been loyal Ford consumer until I got this Volvo, but I had never had my Ford products in the shop other than for oil changes. Volvo expects the consumer to pay $350 to have a maintenance check after every 10,000 miles. NEVER AGAIN

I never saw myself as a Volvo kinda guy. My S40 was a loaner at the local dealer. Bought it with 4,000 miles on it - got a deal that was really hard to pass up. Ive owned A LOT of different cars and I must say this S40 may be the most competent car Ive ever owned. The longer I owned it the more things Ive noticed about the car that I like. Sure, Ive had the check engine light problem, and it does burn up headlights, and I have had to replace the brake pads, but all things considered, these are pretty minor problems(and in the case of the headlights - inexpensive). Ill hit 50,000 miles this month - the car has never let me down.

  • 110K Miles and Going - 2000 Volvo S40

I love this car! I have personally put over 100K miles on this car in heavy traffic and on road trips and I have never regretted the purchase once. My service has been excellent, my reliability good and the car is without question a well performing small car. I have to say I understand the weiners, they just did not understand the car they purchased. There was a defect with the headlights which was completely fixed under warranty. The brake pads do wear quickly. Volvos have great brakes, they stop on a dime. Great brakes wear quickly, thats the trade-off. I would never trade my safety and breaking for saving a $100 in brake pads.

I bought my S40 with 13,450 miles, 2 years ago and must have gotten the only one made well. I blew one headlight before the recall for the wiring harness. The brake pads were changed, but thats normal wear and tear. Other than that just my routine 7,500 hundred mile service. The car isnt as bad as the reviews suggest. Most of the complaints were rectified on the 2001 model. I think Volvo owners just like to complain. The same types of complaints can be found on the brick board web site. I have enjoyed driving my S40.

  • My first Volvo...wont be my last - 2000 Volvo S40

I wanted a Volvo since I was a kid and was quite surprised when I got financed into an S40 at agreeable terms. The maintenance schedule is a little high, I must admit, but in my opinion its worth it. In one year, Ive put about 20,500 miles on the car. (This will go down as I moved closer to the city). Very comfortable, very solid, and fun to drive. Like it a lot but will upgrade to a station wagon (V70)when I can.

  • Excellent car - 2000 Volvo S40

I bought this car a year ago and I love it! I always get compliments, even when I am at traffic lights. It rides smooth and is very sturdy. The only thing that bothers me is the cupholder blocking the stereo. I still cant understand why someone designed it to be in the place that it is.

First, let me say that I do love my car. Its reliable and safe. The problems that crop up are minor but sometimes annoying. Let me first disagree with some: the armrest is fine, paint is amazing and I dont know what glare theyre talking about. That being said, I believe the manual seats could be redesigned, and the cup holder is atrocious. Rear locks do stick. A lot of little nothings. However, its a blast to drive at speed. It also handles reasonably well and I like the stiff feel. Its also very safe speaking from fender-bender experience. I recommend it as a great college car (when I bought it, anyway).

  • Not a Volvo, A Mitsubishi - 2000 Volvo S40

Volvo made a critical error in marketing this Mitsubishi built car as a Volvo. It has really hurt their overall rep in the USA. While the car is decent and can last a good while if HEAVILY cared for (now at 135K and still running strong), it just does not have the build quality of a Swedish built sedan. Volvo if you learn anything from this experience, do NOT sell out again just to get market share...it hurts you in the long run. Volvo buyers are NOT simple minded and we know good products and bad products. The 2000-04 S40 is just a bad product (relative to what we expect)

Excellent choice in a vehicle for a company that is known for safety and reliability.
