Overview & Reviews
Based on the same platform as the Lexus RX 300, Toyota's new Highlander SUV represents the best blend of a station wagon, a minivan and a sport utility available on the market today. Available only with a V6 and an automatic transmission driving power to the front or all the wheels, Highlander will be sold in one trim level with a Limited package listed on the option sheet.
- Roomy interior, car-like ride and handling, spunky V6 engine, predicted reliability.

2001 Highlander awd - 2001 Toyota Highlander
By Maurice - March 30 - 10:46 pmBought used, a beater, with 79K in 2009 now has 127K and like Toyotas it has never let me down. Easy to drive, blasts trough rain and snow, computer controlled traction control is the way to go, plus 4 wheel antilock disc brakes make this a great SUV for the $. The 3.5 L in the 2008+ models are even more improved. Cons: Thirsty in city driving.

120K and going strong - 2001 Toyota Highlander
By Anne - October 24 - 8:26 amBought used 12/03 w/27K miles; now just over 120,000, & though overdue a major check-up & first tune-up, Ive had few problems. Mileage still avgs. 20-21 mpg & might improve a bit once tuned. Except for routine maint., have only had to replace some sort of emissions sensor. Ck engine light came on a few times at first, but once I realized it was always right after oil change, & they werent reconnecting an air hose properly after ckg the air filter, I always warn them about it, & it hasnt happened since. Htg&A/C intermittently switches over to opposite of what its set on. Turning temp. knob over & back resets it so havent fixed since entire panel must be pulled - big $$$, Im told

Best car I have ever owned - 2001 Toyota Highlander
By gigmom - October 14 - 10:00 amI bought my Highlander with 67,000 miles on it.. It just turned 216,000 miles. Minor repairs like brakes, O2 sensor, but this car is a BEAST in the snow! I live on a mountain top in New England and it goes through a foot and a half of snow on a dirt road climbing a hill like its nothing!! The original Toyota battery lasted for 169,000 miles. The car rocks! I will drive it until it sighs its last breath then buy another.

Honeymoon Not Over For Ex-Minivan Mom! - 2001 Toyota Highlander
By Patty and Phil - June 10 - 2:56 am"Minivan mom" for 10 years. Wanted change but keep power, space & luxury. Own the V6 Ltd in Bluestone Metallic with the 6-disc CD & moonroof. Too bad no factory gray leather, but the cloth is very pretty and very comfortable. LOVE THE FENDER FLARES! Negotiated my heart out - eventually able to get a 2001 when the 2002s came out for about $600 over invoice.Go for it!

Wonderful - 2001 Toyota Highlander
By brussell889 - January 1 - 8:46 pmThis is one of the best SUVs out there!! I have yet to have a problem with it, and Ive almost reached the 100,000 mile mark. It still runs as if it just came off of the assembly line.

2001 Toyota Highlander - 2001 Toyota Highlander
By Don - December 5 - 11:40 amAfter all the bad experiences with a Chevy, an Olds, and 2 Fords, I risked buying this the first year they were offered. One of the best decisions Ive ever made. Drives well, good with my bad back, and reliable. No repairs, only scheduled maintenance. Drawbacks: burns lots of oil (2 qts on a 250 mile hwy trip), and the front seat support broke on one side. (I skipped the $800 to replace it by putting a box of paper underneath to prop it up.)

Highlander is a very good SUV - 2001 Toyota Highlander
By hammon44 - May 3 - 3:20 amI have owned my Highlander Limited for almost 8 years and have put on about 90,000 miles. Purchased it at 33,000 miles. The SUV has been very good. It has been perfect for everything Ive done in the last eight years including multiple cross country road trips and hauling stuff from the home depot. Even the roof rack have been very helpful. In 2002 the Limited edition had more features than I need from a car. Leather has held up very well. Very comfortable ride. Only one major repair needed. The SUVs computer failed three years ago. Cost over $1500 to get it replaced. Have had 4 sets of tires which is excessive but could be due to buying lower tier tires for the first 3 sets.
