Overview & Reviews
This year all heavy-duty Silverados receive a redesigned hood and grille. On extended and crew cab models, a power sunroof is a new option, and it includes a HomeLink universal transmitter and deluxe overhead console.
- Powerful engine lineup, multiple drivetrain configurations, substantial towing and hauling capacities.
- Spotty build quality, mediocre interior design and materials.

Fuel hungry Duramax - 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
By CGullett - October 25 - 11:53 amMy 05 crew cab, short box,4x4,Duramax is a pretty good truck, except for the fact that it gets 10-11 mpg @75 mph.Seems all 05s are having this problem while the 02-04s are enjoying 18-19 mpg.The worst thing is that after spending over $44,000, Chevrolet admitts they have a problem but have no fix and dont seem to be to worried about fixing the problem.

SILVER BULLET - (DURAMAX / ALLISON) - 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
By Big AL - July 15 - 11:36 amTraded a great 04 Loaded LS Crew Cab SWB 4x4 W/LB7 D-Max & Allison in for Loaded LS Extended Cab 4x4 W/LLY D-MAX & Allison. Ride is much firmer, but this truck is 10" shorter than my other truck; therefore the reason for the firmer ride. I think the extended cab SWB in the 2500HDs look better than the rest, but this is soley my opinion. My LLY is getting 2 MPG (17.1 HWY)less than the LB7 was(19.2 HWY). Still decent MPG for a 402 CID engine. If you plan on keeping the truck for a long period of time or if you drive many miles yearly, get the D-MAX, either with auto or standard transmission. Overall, it will cost you less at the pumps than the gas engines, will last longer & have a higher resale.

Mileage Stinks - 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
By Jdgrn4ever - March 14 - 11:43 pmHaving owned a 01 Duramax, I have to say that Im very disappointed with my 05. Having averaged 22 mpg with my 01, going down to 15 mpg with my 05 is very disturbing. Coupled with the fact that my dealership is encouraging me to purchase an after- market performance chip in the hopes that the mileage may improve 3 or 4 mpg. The trucks ride is much better than a Ford or a Dodge. However, personally, I liked the styling of my 01 better. With the slant-eyed headlights, it would seem that the final design of the 05 front-end came out of Hong Kong. If you dont mind spending 1/2 of your time at the gas station, buy a new Chevy Duramax. Else, do what I am ... consider buying a Ford.

Sheldon Richards - 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
By sheldon richards - March 3 - 2:16 pmThe positives are the room for six people, especially with a family. I like the lifted hood design and the fog lamps are awesome (however I get brighted a lot from oncoming traffic)! The wind noise in WY, does make it a little noisy down the interstate. Feel safe driving it. Although the extended mirrors are nice, they vibrate so bad that you cannot see out of them going down the highway (even on a smooth highway). Had some difficulties with the mirrors sticking in retract mode. Gas mileage is TERRIBLE! Averaging 11.7 miles per gallon. I have used 1,100 gallons of fuel since April, with approximately 13,000 miles on it, not pulling any weight.

American Work Horse - 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
By chevyguy9 - October 23 - 11:43 pmThis truck is absolutly outstanding. Before I owned it, a rancher out in the Houston area owned it. He had to haul horse trailers, trailers with hay bales, tractors, you name it. From what the dealership told us, the previous owner had it stuck in a river for three days. The only thing needing replacement was the computer system. Since we have had it, all i have had to replace was a fuel pump. ive dont everything imaginable in this truck. I can cruise at 85 no problem. You wouldent even know that my 30 rv was behind the truck because it doesnt strain the engine at all. This truck is perfect for anything. No matter what you put it through, it wont stop. EVER

Follow Up - 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
By Andria - October 3 - 8:06 amAfter 17 months of owning this truck and 30,000 miles of hard towing ruff winter driving, I love this truck. Not one thing has gone wrong, only routine maintance done. This truck drives the same as it did 17 months ago. Big and roomy for the kids we take this truck on all of our family outings, its like driving a luxury car. I get about 18 miles per gallon going 65/75 on the hihgway and about 15 in the city. Hauling I get about 14MPG fully loaded of 12,000lbs towing. Cannot complain. I also used Biodiesel in my truck and got great gas mileage. almost 20MPG on highway. Plus the engine ran better. Just can not find it where I live. Buy this truck.

Long Term Review - 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
By RetiredGuns - October 18 - 5:06 amDuramax/Allison HD LT. This has by far been the absolute best Truck I have ever owned, bar none! In 35 years I have owned all Big 3 Trucks, this is an nearing an excellent choice. I get 22 MPG HWY, 17 City, and 12 with a Truck Camper and 5K LB Boat trailer. If you are considering this model in the used market, make sure LOFs were done, and youd have a gem through 300K miles easy! Its a joy to operate this machine. I have kept it mostly stock with the exception of replacing the Gum Wrapper bumper with an aftermarket Ranch Hand 300 LB thick Steel Tube/Diamondplate one, providing substantial front end protection. This truck is a winner all around otherwise. Id NEVER consider an impor
