This Year's Model Updates:

This long overdue redesign of the S90 counts several firsts to its credit: first with a transverse inline six, first with fully integrated GSM phone, first to carry an environmental specification (Europe only at introduction) and the S80 boasts the world's smallest manual transmission.

Pros:
  • Safety. Comfort. Performance of the S80 T6. Interesting styling.
Cons:
  • No wagon available - yet.

  • What a Nightmare - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

I bought this vehicle used because of the high cost only to find that this car had been badly abused and neglected. Unfortunately the only love and care that would help was $$$. Not only that, but the vehicle likes the abuse - it gets the worst dents from the smallest nudge. Its an aweful investment if you dont have a lot of money or time for the dealer (and only the dealer) to repair or if you work/live in a densely populated area. Had it less than 2 years & getting rid of it 2 years too late. And what is it worth now??? If you like it, rent it; its not worth buying.

  • Do not buy this car - 1999 Volvo S80

At first I loved it, even though the right blinker was hanging out of the car when I got home from the dealership. That has happened two more times. The check engine light comes on every other time you get gas. The air conditioner went out (on a road trip, in summer, in TX, with a baby. Bushings had to be replaced. I have had 5 new 17" tires (never had that problem with any other car). The ride is no longer quiet. A lot of little things that add up to severe annoyance!

  • Fake Transmission Issue - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

I bought a white 1999 S80 2.9 Executive (surround sound stereo with 4-disk CD changer and performance suspension and handling) with exactly 90,000 miles on it in September, 2008 for $5,500. I test drove it and it ran great! Two weeks after I bought it, the "attention" triangle lit up red and the status screen said "Transmission service urgent." I had the transmission rebuilt which was luckily covered under the warranty I purchased for from the dealer. After the rebuild, the warning came up again. I took it to my local Volvo dealership and they found out that the Mass Air Flow Sensor was bad and it has been a great car ever since! Easy $175 fix because of labor.

  • Nothing but expensive problems - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

I loved the looks and comfort of this car and felt confident in spending the extra money because it was a Volvo. Much to my expense, I wasnt informed that this model is Volvos nightmare ( ask any Volvo service person). It had multiple problems with the window mechanisms, a faulty steering rack, an extremely costly throttle problem, an ABS computer sensor defect and the list goes on. Now Ive finally had it and am steering clear of all Volvos made by Ford!

  • I love my Volvo S80 - 1999 Volvo S80

I have a 99 S80 2.9. What a great car this has been. I put a lot of miles on my cars and have absolutely no complaints at all with my 1999 Volvo S80. My Volvo is currently at 92,000 miles, not far from 100,000 miles. Might I add trouble free miles. One repair only which was covered by the warranty and was pretty minor. I would recommend this car to anyone.

  • Buyer Beware - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

I bought my S80 T6 on eBay (I know-what was I thinking). In the 8 mos. Ive had the vehicle, Ive dumped over $3000 in repairs. Seems like every time I take it to the shop (which is often) it costs $600. Its really too bad, because this is a great driving car with exceptional comfort and interior features. I wont buy another Volvo because of this, and its dissapointing.

  • Get the extended Warranty and enjoy! - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

I love its styling, interior size and performance. I quickly found out its a good idea to buy the extended warranty. My Volvo was 3 yrs. old w /50K miles when I bought it for $22K. I have put 20K more miles on it in 10 months. with four trips to the shop. New front end/steering system, new headlight (twice),repeated front end suspension issues. The good news, the warranty saved my butt from $3-5K in repairs. The mileage is great 26-29 hwy, a dream to drive for long trips. I love the looks, hate hassel of dealing w/ Volvo dealers for oil changes, tune ups and their VERY EXPENSIVE fees for normal maintenance. IF you buy this car GET the Warranty.

  • EXTREMELY high maintenance - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

Maybe they have worked the kinks out by now, but after my experience with my S80 I will NEVER own another Volvo again. It has been EXTREMELY high maintenance, in the shop for warranty repairs over 30 times in 4 years and drives poorly. It does not "hold the road" and over-sensitive steering makes it almost dangerous in hairy situations. I would sell it but the resale value is NOTHING!!! $16K for a low mileage car I paid $42K for... I bought it because I loved the way it looked and I have been regretting it ever since it went to the shop for the first time with only 800 miles on it.

  • Safety at its best! - 1999 Volvo S80

I have never written a review on a car before but I really feel I owe this to Volvo. Last week while taking my kids to school we were hit, and I mean hit bad. A pickup ran through a light and smashed into our S80 hard. The police estimated the truck was driving between 50-60 mph. I was so afraid when I saw the truck coming that fast, and right into us. I thought we were going to be killed. My son, my daughter and I were all okay. Not a single injury! The police could not believe the blow this car took. There were deployed airbags everywhere, even in the backseats for my kids. We are going back to Volvo for another S80. Thank you Volvo for saving our family.

  • never again - 1999 Volvo S80

I have had a love/hate relationship with my S80. Beautiful styling, best seats in the business, great 8 speaker stereo. LOUSY reliability, Paid $15,000.00 at 5yrs old and 37,000 miles. Noisy front end, repairing strut mounts twice, engine mount, ball joints, rear shocks, broken fuel line in the tank, ABS speed sensor failure, repairs too numerous to remember. Cost of ownership is way too high with every repair costing $1000.00 or more each time. Volvo has proprietary software diagnostics which requires you take it to a Volvo dealer every or most every time. Its simply too unreliable and costly to own. Too bad, it is a top of the line car. SHAME on Volvo for the poor engineering.
