This Year's Model Updates:

This long overdue redesign of the S90 counts several firsts to its credit: first with a transverse inline six, first with fully integrated GSM phone, first to carry an environmental specification (Europe only at introduction) and the S80 boasts the world's smallest manual transmission.

Pros:
  • Safety. Comfort. Performance of the S80 T6. Interesting styling.
Cons:
  • No wagon available - yet.

  • GM Transmission - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

I have a 1999 Volvo S-80. I just had the tramission rebuilt, It was done by a friend of mine so the cost was cheaper than someone off the street. I was surprised that when my friend told me that the transmission was a General Motors product. The problem was the 3rd gear went out. The mechanic told me this was common in this type transmission weither it was in a Volvo or a GM product. The clutches in this type transmission are not as tight meaning the shift will be smoother, but this leaves weaknest in the shifting process but smooth. So if you have tranny problems it will problem be the 3rd gear clutches. But the good news is it will probably be a good old GM transmission.

I have been back to the dealer more times than I can remember with this car. One thing after another. I fix it and Ill be damned if it doesnt brake again. Leaks, rattles, and an all around poor experience is what i got with my S80T6.

  • Bad Tranny Was The Last Straw - 1999 Volvo S80

After buying the car used from a Volvo dealership, I had traction control module and transmission service urgent warnings within about two months. The car must have been rode hard in a prior life and had some serious electronic/mechanic issues. TCM was replaced after losing control and ending up in a ditch. Followed up by a near-fatal loss of power due to a faulty Electronic Throttle Module on an expressway surrounded by semis going 75mph (dealer replaced on recall). Last straw was another bout of Transmission Service Urgent warnings that the dealer claimed meant needing a new transmission at less than 80K miles. Knock on wood, my 2005 S80 T6 has been problem free for 8 months cross-country.

  • Totally Satisfied! - 1999 Volvo S80

I purchased this car in 2000. It was a 1999 S80 T6 and had 22,000 miles on it when I purchased it. I now have a little over 70,000 miles on my car and I am as happy as can be. The car rides great, is very comfortable, the twin turbos are wonderful, and the car has been very reliable. Other than regular maintenance, I have not had any repairs. If youre looking into a 1999 Volvo S80 T6, buy with absolute confidence. When I hit the 100,000 mark it should be paid off. I will look into another T6. This is definately the best car my wife and I have ever owned!

  • This Car is Possessed! - 1999 Volvo S80

I bought this car 2 years ago with the check engine light on and spent the past two years replacing everything trying to get it to go off and stay off. The car stays in the shop more than it stays on the road...it is a joke at my job, that my car is in the shop AGAIN!!! I can not afford to sell it, because I owe almost twice as much on it as the blue book value. It was wrecked and it cost $8,000 to fix it...my insurance company didnt want it either...Volvo should be sued for such shotty workmanship. This was my second Volvo, the first was a charm. I am very DISAPPOINTED and I tell everyone who admires how the car looks, not to buy a 1999 model.

  • No more VOLVO - 1999 Volvo S80

Can you spell unreliable. Let me help you! VOLVO 1999 S-80 T6. If time and money are no object, here is your car. You will need both for your numerous trips to the service department. If you enjoy seeing your check engine warning light illuminate weekly this is the vehicle for you. What an engineering flaw. Obviously others have had the same problems I have experienced, yet no releif from Volvo exists. I have steered numerous friends and clients away froming buying this vehicle. Could be a great car but sadly isnt. Look to BMW, Acura for better value and more reliability.

  • Love/Hate Relationship - 1999 Volvo S80

This car is so much fun to drive, but is too unreliable to keep. Three radiators, 2 transmissions, 2 gear shift mechanisms, more bulbs and sensors replaced than I can count, etc.. Towed to the dealer twice within a month. It is truly a shame that an automobile that is this stylish and enjoyable to drive is so poorly engineered. UNRELIABLE=UNSAFE

the best, most diltitful Volvo i owned, its fast and comfotable, it makes you feel wery well preserved from outside elements in this car. The suspention and steering has alot of room for inprovments.

  • I have a bad feeling... - 1999 Volvo S80

I have had this car for a year now and have been satisfied but recently small problems have been arising and I have a bad feeling about it. There is a warning about the emission system that is quite alarming and though the car was advertised as a gas saver Im averaging about 21 mpg. I love the car but am thinking about getting rid of it because for the price I dont feel it is going to hold up like it should.

  • Youll love it..... - 1999 Volvo S80

Ive now had my 1999 S80 T6 for about three years. I bought it used with about 18,000 miles on it. I now have a little over 65,000 miles on it. All I can say is I love it. I bought it for myself (wife has a Mercedes CLK) bbut shes always fighting for the T6. She complains primarily about the seats in the Mercedes and also its too tight inside. The seats in our T6 are absolutely the finest. Its also very spacious, great looking, very dependable, and sooooo FAST! Only repair Ive had was a clip that was loose for a light (under warranty). Other than that, completely trouble free. A superb car for the price!
