This Year's Model Updates:

This long overdue redesign of the S90 counts several firsts to its credit: first with a transverse inline six, first with fully integrated GSM phone, first to carry an environmental specification (Europe only at introduction) and the S80 boasts the world's smallest manual transmission.

Pros:
  • Safety. Comfort. Performance of the S80 T6. Interesting styling.
Cons:
  • No wagon available - yet.

Inexpensive relative to others in its class?? I remember that write up! What Volvo doesnt charge up front they sure make it up in maintaining this piece of crap. The "on board computer" has been as bad as Windows XP! It has given dealers a new weapon to charge you for things that arent really broken. To name a few sore spots.AC(do the Sweds know what its supposed to do?), transmission problems, fuel pump(60K miles?), sensors, light bulbs?why? Many share this view...as I recommended (months after I first bought my S80) to numerous friends and work associates of which I had three buy the same model! All have spent more money then I have on problems.

  • Finally, an enjoyable car to own! - 1999 Volvo S80

To begin with, Ive owned an Infiniti Q45, an older Jaguar (1987), two Bmws and now a Volvo. I bought my S80 back in 1999 which was the first model year for this car. I do not have a single complaint. To date, two recalls have been performed at no charge and thats it! I have right around 55,000 miles on the car and I wouldnt trade it for the world. I love everything about this car! I have yet to see any luxury car that can stand up to the S80, or even come close. As far as safety, there is not a single car that can touch an S80. On a scale of 1 - 10 I give this car an 11. Its a super smooth and solid vehicle! Volvo did great!

  • Simply Awesome! - 1999 Volvo S80

Ive had my 99 S80 for almost 4 years now and over 50,000 miles. Its incredible! Thats the best way I can describe it. I really cant find anything that is not perfect on this car. I did have one defect on the car which was warranty. Thats why I rated it a 9 and not a 10 for the build quality. I really feel this is a perfect car. Other repairs have been software upgrade (solves all issues with these cars) and ball joints replaced under a recall. If you want a good reliable, safe car, this is it.

  • Wanted to Like... - 1999 Volvo S80

I really wanted to like this car. It was so comfertable and I felt very safe all of the time. Drove like a dream. However it has been a constant money pit The car has 163,000 miles on it so it is old but its not going to last with out hundreds maybe thousands of dollars invested. Its been constant for the last two years: In addition routine work I have also had to replace struts, fix the fuel pump, the coils, the head light got busted and the electics have never been the same, the ac is shot, the power locks are shot, had to have the power steering fixed, and ALL of the fabric lining is coming off. Lots of money, time, and towing

  • Buy a S-80 again? Probably NOT! - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

For a car that wraps around you and says, I will protect you in a crash, my S-80 was a very disappointing experience. . My problems varied with the fuel injection and the suspension being the 2 greatest problems. Dealer had the car 2 months trying to fix it and 13 trips to the shop for misc. problems like the transmission sensor, just to mention a few. The dealer ship was wonderful, only problem was the 130 miles to get there. The day the car was going back it made it on a tow truck. For the 4 months before I dumped the car I put it in my back yard and let grass grow up around it.

  • Over Four Years and Trouble Free! - 1999 Volvo S80

Ive had my 99 S80 T6 now for over four years. Aside from regular maintenance and a recall performed at no charge, Ive done nothing but drive this car. Maintenance has been relatively inexpensive as I expected it to be more. I know Volvo released a computer download to correct all issues on these cars. I had it done to my car at no charge shortly after I bought it. My dealer said after they do that, theyre arent too many cars that can touch the S80 for its great reliability. I have absolutely no complaints at all. The 99 S80 is great! Super comfortable and power that cant be touched by any other luxury car out there. Recommended very highly!

  • Finally a Car Im Keeping! - 1999 Volvo S80

I bought this car new back in 99. This has been my first Volvo and Im impressed! The performance of this sedan is better than outstanding! The twin turbos are just amazing! For the first time, Im truly impressed with a car. Having owned some fine luxury cars throughout the years, nothing stacks up to the T6. With the exception of one small repair, this car has been virtually maintenance free. I paid about $50,000 for this car when I bought it, and I couldnt be any happier with the vehicle. I now have 118,000 miles on the car and it runs so well. I can honestly recommend this vehicle to anyone! This is a very well engineered car!

  • Completely Satisfied! - 1999 Volvo S80

I know the saying, usually the ones to speak up are the ones with complaints. I have no complaints at all! I bought this car used with about 20,000 miles. The car now has about 70,000 and has been like gold to me. I love getting in my car and driving every chance I get! Very comfortable and very reliable. Did I say fast? With its twin turbos, the T6 is incredible! Maintenance has been low and priced right. This car has exceeded my expectations and I am 100% satisfied with this model!

  • What a tease.Great when it runs! - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

This is by far the best sedan for performance I have ever owned. The ride (when its running) and power is like no other. I get to enjoy it about every other week.I have also never owned a car that spent so much time at the local repair shop and the dealership. I have owned it for 2 months and its been out of use for 3 weeks of that time. I have owned 9 Volvos and this should be my last. Very sad to see such a great car maker go down the tubes. I was thinking about a new one ( being under warranty) but I have seen that they are not much better,They still have not worked the bugs out.

  • Consumer Beware!! - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

Purchased this car from private seller at 20,000 miles. Previously had a 240 sedan and wagon. Thought this was the most beautiful and comfortable car I had ever experienced. The love affair was short lived. Constant problems with electronics, sensors, throttle, ball joints, computer modules... at 80,000 miles was told ball joints needed replacing (I found out at that time that they had been recalled and replaced prior to my purchasing from seller). Unreliable and expensive car to repair!! Company does not seem to care that their customers were sold an expensive piece of junk. Trying to get rid of now... not running, needs $3500 more, will just sell for junk which it is! Never another Volvo!!
