Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.
- Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
- Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

By Ghodd - September 10 - 10:00 amI have had this car for about 2 1/2 months now i purchased a black used 5 speed Jetta with 64,838 miles on it...i know its high mileage but i havent had any engine problems yet..the fuel economy is perfect, the only problem i need to get fixed is minor. My right passenger window i think the motor burned out so i have to get a new one, AND sometimes when i lock my door with the lock button on my key the car locks but the drivers side door the actually lock its self doesnt lock but it engages the alaram so i have to unlock then lock it again..but that only happens sometimes..its not a big deal.

By Danny - July 19 - 10:00 amAmazed at some of the issues that I have found on this board. I was lucky enough to find one of the good ones I guess. I have logged over 69,000 miles on mine, and have only had to replaced a temperature sensor, which was expensive. The only time my engine light comes on is when I get into the lower states like Ar, Tx, etc. (gas issue maybe).I have a 1999 with 111,000 miles so I guess if the only thing that I have replaced is the sensor I will consider my self lucky. Nice car to have on the highway. Trunk light works when it wants is another problem that I do have.

Best Car Ive Ever Owned - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By Guru - June 21 - 10:00 amPlain and simple, I have never owned a better more reliable car. I drive the car a little on the hard side, and I still get over 30 miles to the gallon. I am over 6 feet tall, and I ride everywhere in comfort. This is a very comfortable highway cruiser (easily gobbles ground at 90+ mph) and sporty city commuter. I will never own another non-European car again.

By Gerald - February 28 - 10:00 amA great little car thats fun to drive! This car really holds up well. I drive it pretty hard ... I dont baby it. I dont like driving a car thats a dog or makes a lot of noise and isnt going anywhere fast. The 2.0 liter is surprisingly peppy and gets decent gas mileage (30 mpg - hwy). Its far from being the fastest car on the road but still begs to be driven! Hence the slogan ... Drivers Wanted!

Runs Awesome, Have Minor Problems - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By Tim - January 9 - 7:56 pmMy Jetta runs great. I take it on the Autobahn and top her out, but take care of her as well. The check engine light is always on, but apparently it will blink if something major happens. Other than that, I plan on keeping it for a long time, add some sway bars and suspension.
