This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • This car is a... - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

The electrical system on my 1999 Volkswagen Jetta is a nightmare. Push the button down and the window goes up. The flashers went out 4 times in 5 years. I also really enjoyed the weird green oily junk that comes out of the doors in warm weather. In cold weather, ice builds up behind the doors to the point it caused a dent when I opened the door. Leaves, pine needles etc. have no problem finding their way into the trunk and door trim. Dont even think about trying to replace the bulb in the tail light, that requires a trip to the dealership.

  • Poor Poor Jetta - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

We have spent over $4,000 on various sensors on this car in the past 8 months. It runs rough and doesnt start 30% of the time. The drivers side heated seat never worked after 3 attempts we quit asking. The drivers window dropped. The sunroof doesnt work at times. The check engine lite is on all the time. We will NEVER purchase another VW again.

  • CAN ANYBODY FIX THIS CAR? - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This car was supposed to be my answer to commuting. I cannot keep it on the road. Check engine light has come on at 50,000 miles and at 90,000 miles it is still on. Volkswagen mechanics throw up their hands. What do I do? I have spent $2400 for the mechanics to silence this light. What is the 100,000 mile warrenty for? They still say glow plug relay. I began to bottle and sell the ooze that leaks from the doors. If Volkswagen could fix this problem, I would have a decent car. Power windows are a big joke. Fix them in a timely manner for Gods sake. You could not run fast enough to give me another one of these cars.

  • Never again!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Too much wrong offsets everything that is good about this car. I am on my ***14th*** window regulator! I live in Phoenix and the OOZE on the door sills is present 6+ months out of the year. The front end undercarriage is damaged (low clearance, a common Jetta problem). I finally bought a DieHard battery after the first two supplied by VW died in the first year. Performance, once excellent, now sucks wind - 0-60 in about 14 seconds. Fuel economy has dropped below 35mpg city 40mpg hwy. VW customer service is a joke - they are rude and do not care. I am glad I do not own this vehicle!! Built in Mexico - and it shows!

  • Didnt suck too bad - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I enjoyed my Jetta over the two years I drove it - however I had a few problems. The window mechanism broke as I was driving down the highway, brakepads wore out quickly, car was generally very noisy, ect. However, it was fun to drive.

  • poor manufacturing quality - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

My dashboard was put in crooked at the factory, something I did not notice for several months. I had all the usual problems with the oxygen and mass airflow sensors, replaced 3 or 4 times (I forget which), cupholders, green ooze in the doors, poor key, 2 second delay when getting into gear on the automatic transmission. etc. Also an "endearing" noise in the front dash that occurs each year at through the cold weather season. Probably some metal parts contracting and vibrating in the cold. I contacted the president of VW in Germany, got a letter back from Germany saying that some one in the US would come out and look at my car. No one ever showed.

  • Piece of Dung - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Those who give it praise now will indeed curse this car in the future. I have seen people judge their cars by whether or not they were stranded while driving. This car has stranded me 6 times since purchased in May 1999. That may not seem like much to other Jetta drivers (who probably have not been this fortunate), but I can assure you that it has been quite a disappointing journey for me. I will not go into detail about what has happened to this car during the last three years, due to limited space! Lets just say that I have put nearly $5000 into this car since after the 24000 mile mark!

  • Looks/Handles Great - Highly Undreliable - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Looks great from the outside, drives like you think a German sports car should, reliability about as good as a Yugo. I have had this into the dealer 10+ times - for O2 sensor (3X)/trunk lid switch/(1 week of purchase w/ O2 sensor #1), Front rotors (3X in 30K miles-75% Highway). All problems required a SECOND visit because the parts are not in stock - brake rotors for a Jetta not in stock!? VW Corporate Customer service was all about excuses - "Sir, they have to ship the replacement parts all the way from Germany!" I cant wait to unload this before something really nasty happens ("Those water droplets you see on the oil filler cap are normal").

  • Terrible reliability - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought this car for my parents to drive being a supposedly great car. Unfortunately, we have never seen such terrible reliability in a car. This car visits the dealership every other month with every breakdown possible from turbo, glowplugs, electrical, engine problems, carbon build up, door locks, lighting contols, stalling, not starting etc. etc. My parents are stuck driving their older Buick LeSabre most the time because it is the only car they can trust.

My car is a 1999 model. Since the warranty went off (24,000), I have replaced the fuel gauge and float, radiator valve, several sensors, catalitic converter, etc. etc. I have spent over $1500 in one year on service. Never again.
