This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • Volkswagon Sucks!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

We have had so many problems with this car! We have had electrical problems with the radio and windows, the car does not shift well (it has an automatic transmission), we have to replace the rotars every year. We only drive the car 18 miles a day and consistently have to pay between $300 - $700 every year to get the car past inspection. The interior of the car is supposed to be stain resistant but get stained with a small amount of WATER. Our interior is a mess mostly from water stains. We thought that Volkswagons were very reliable, quality cars... we wil NEVER purchase another VW!

A number of things have gone wrong with this car and now I am looking at a bill of 1500.00 and of course, only the dealership can fix it. I use to love VWs ....NO MORE.

I have had repeated problems with the engine...COSTLY repeated problems. The ENTIRE computer system of the car failed and had to be replaced...the mass air flow system replaced...oxygen sensors replaced twice. Interior problems as well; cheap quality plastics used in glove compartment hinges (snapped/broken), other broken interior items as well.

  • A Huge Disappointment!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Within 2 months, my O2 sensor needed replacing. Then I had a brake light that refused to flicker but stayed on. Thank god I was still under warranty! Less than a year later, my speedometer dropped and after two diagnostic tests, it was revealed I need a new instrument cluster. Soon after another O2 sensor was required. Then, following the O2 sensor recall, I was back in the shop for a Mass Air Flow sensor replacement. Also, the metal under my backseat window moldings began rusting within 2 years. Overall, youre better putting your money into KMart than a 99 GL Jetta.

  • This car has been a terrible mistake - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

This car has been one continual headache after another. The windows continue to fall off the tracks. We go get them fixed and then the glass falls down inside the door with a loud thud again. During the warm weather, large amounts of grease from the window mechanism leaks down through door and on to the frame where you get in and out of the car--getting on your clothes. We have had many other problems besides this, so I definitely would not recommend anyone to purchase a Volkswagen.

This is my 2nd Jetta and Im extremely disappointed. Cupholders have been replaced twice. Glove box replaced twice. Battery died after 12 months??? Trunk motor went on the fritz, causing the trunk to continually pop open. 02 Sensor issue. Interior seat material does not wear well at all. Brakes needed to be replaced too soon for me. Too many little things for a lease car. Im willing to pay anything to get out of it. Never again!

Cat converter went @ 65000. Electrical problems with power windows. Steering loud during turns. No major engine, or transmission problems.

  • Really, Dont Do it! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I have spent so much time in the shop with this car it is hard to think where to start. I really hate it. I have heard that if you can get one that was made in Germany, they are good quality cars. Mine was made in good ol Mexico, and have trouble with it regularly. fuel pump, window motors, AC pump, fog lights, head lights, and so on. The muffler fell off. VW wanted $400 just for the part. ouch! I spend no less that $1,500 on it annually.

  • Lemon - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

From the first 100 miles when the fuel pump kicked out WHILE I was driving on the highway, to the clear coat popping off the front bumper within the first year, to a computer malfunction that shut down the car (and the consequent week it took for them to get the warrantied part back into it), this car was the worst Ive ever had. Held tight and got a great trade-in and bought a new Elantra. About the only saving grace of this bitter lemon.
