This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • Buy Something Else! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought this Jetta as a replacement for my aging Saab 900SE in 12/04. This car looked really nice with its low stocky stance and red and blue lights inside. It sure was a looker, but thats where the love affair ended. Fourth gear on the car would rattle and there was a buzzing / rattling in the headliner that would get on my everlasting nerves! It got HORRIBLE gas mileage for a 4yl. car and it had NO power at all. I thought all European cars were made the same, well I guess VW is the redheaded stepchild of the bunch. It also burned oil and the front bumper would occasionally fall off for no apparent reason! I sold it last year and dont miss it at all.

  • Ill Buy Another VW - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought the Jetta when I was driving 120 miles a day round trip to work. I needed reliability and fuel economy and a degree of cool was important, too. I am a very happy customer with over 162,000 miles and expecting another 100,000. I love my little red practically perfect VW Jetta. Now I only drive six miles round trip each day. My Jetta is still perfectly wonderful for my purposes. Plus, no car payments! I will strive to keep this car a very long time, But when I finally do buy my next new car, it will be a VW- maybe a Passat next time.

This is a fun car and very dependable. The only complaints I have are the windshield wipers are lousy, and the windows fog up in the winter when the heat is on.

  • Quality ... Fun ... Inexpensive - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

A great little car thats fun to drive! This car really holds up well. I drive it pretty hard ... I dont baby it. I dont like driving a car thats a dog or makes a lot of noise and isnt going anywhere fast. The 2.0 liter is surprisingly peppy and gets decent gas mileage (30 mpg - hwy). Its far from being the fastest car on the road but still begs to be driven! Hence the slogan ... Drivers Wanted!

  • Miss my Jetta - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I had my jetta for almost 6 years and loved it overall. It was a manual transmission which made it fun to drive. The only problem with the transmission that I had was that it had difficulty going into 1st. It got great gas mileage and other than when the AC broke during a 10 hr drive in the summer, it was great on trips. I did have some mechanical issues including a $600 fix after I attempted to replace the battery and the whole computer shut down. I had electrical problems too and the cup holders and side window adjusters broke often. However, I drove it until I totalled it in March. I will say that I was only hurt minorly and feel that the car was very safe.

  • vw ok but too little - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I have to say I have not experienced such terrible luck. We bought the car at 20,000 miles and the O2 sensor problem was already fixed. We have had the drivers window drop into the door and had to replace the motor- a problem I hear others describing. The dash cupholder is junk- broken by 35,000 miles. Otherwise our Jetta has been mechanically fine. We are about to sell it to its 3rd owner but only because baby #2 is coming in december and the backseat is too TINY for 2 car seats! In fact few of our friends are able to sit back there b/c its so small. We find that the passenger has to sit with knees right against the airbag- and we are not that tall!

  • The usual - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

From me you get much of the same: Love the looks, annoyed by the reliability. But its good not to have a car payment. Since buying my car in 1999 Ive replaced the coil pack at least once, maybe twice, replaced the wiper motor (which then failed again but I got a replacement free). In the last 4 months, at about 80,000 miles, Ive replaced the O2 sensor and manifold, which combined with the wipers cost about $2000. I need a new catalytic converter, which will be around $1300. Yet I cant afford a new car, so oh well. Combined city and highway overall mileage has been about 25 mpg, so thats decent.

  • Runs Awesome, Have Minor Problems - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

My Jetta runs great. I take it on the Autobahn and top her out, but take care of her as well. The check engine light is always on, but apparently it will blink if something major happens. Other than that, I plan on keeping it for a long time, add some sway bars and suspension.
