Overview & Reviews
Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.
- Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
- Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

One for the road - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By Ray - November 2 - 4:40 amThis was the Jetta IV. I bought it new with a sunroof, VR6, 5 speed manual, mag wheels. It was my third VW. I expected a well constructed, reliable, German automobile with fair service at the dealership. It is reliable, but something is always in need of repair. Service at a dealer is a killer... $700+ to replace an alternator. Problems: the alternator, springs keep falling out of the front seats, cup holder breaks easily, glove compartment door broke, AM radio has never worked, regulators on two front windows broke, motor on right rear window shot, both water pumps repleaced, MAF sensor replaced, O2 sensors in cat replaced, antenna cracked, headlight covers have fogged over, surge

Ill miss my lil green homey - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By dgrundei - October 16 - 10:36 pmI bought this car used with 43k miles on it from a private seller who bought it new and took excellent car of it. I have since put roughly 75k miles on it and have invested over $7,500 in maintenence unrelated to regular wear and tear. If something goes wrong, its usually expensive. I had a lot of issues with the fuel system, replacing the fuel injectors and intake manifold. Had some issues with the wipers at 100,000 but replaced the motor myself for about 30 bucks. Otherwise, I love driving the VR6. Its fun, trendy, relatively fuel efficient. The heated leather is nice and comfy, the moonroof is perfect for nice weather. Other than sucking my wallet dry with maintenence, I loved this car!

Fun with flaws - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By matmik - September 27 - 10:00 amsunroof clips broke & they fixed this twice. Was fine for 25000 miles until the front passenger window dropped off the PLASTIC! clips that held it up (this happened twice). The yellow-green grease in the door frame came, and continues to emerge in warm weather. Had the O2/Mass Air issues as well. VW repaired the o2, but not before the mass airflow went, which I had to pay to fix. Interior molding coming off is whats erking me now, but rubber cement fixed that.

I love my car , but woudnt buy it again - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By kimjo - June 8 - 10:00 amI love my car, but with 37k miles, its a lemon and VOA isnt standing behind their product. The automatic key broke & the only solution is to repalce the key for $100, the passenger window fell off the track & slide into the door. The dashboard lights have burnt out 2x, the glove box fell off the hinge and unfortunately the list goes on..... Ironically, none of these problems occurred until the past 4 months, which is when i bought the car outright from the lease. Dont even consider a test drive, just walk away.

Solid for the most part, but not awesome - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By BCgoalie - April 30 - 2:20 amI bought this car wanting a fun-to-drive compact sedan, and thats what I got. Unfortunately, there have been a few costly problems. At first, the car was in commendable condition, but some cosmetics like the glovebox, radio antenna and side molding on the doors have started to fall apart. The engine and transmission have been completely problem-free, but electronic issues with the power windows and a moody stereo system have a tendency to break. Overall though, the car has been extremely reliable, is peppy and good looking, and my next car will be another VW!

Great Car, but unfortunate - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By VWkid - March 12 - 9:00 amI have owned this car for less than a month and it is fantastic. It drives well, looks great, and has tons of extras, all for a low price, now and when it was new. I love the car.

Great for everyday use! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By DANIEL - March 5 - 10:20 amI picked this car up for cheap, reason why its a 2.0 and not the infamous 1.8t or vr6. Stock the engine is just enough for A to B driving. Great for a working car or long trips thanks to its decent milage per gallon. If you looking for performance you should look at the 2.0 unless your into engine tuning and are willing to spend another 2,500 to supercharge or turbo the engine.

AboveAverage - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By Grommit - June 14 - 2:00 amOverall the car is mechanically sound and fun to drive. The VR6 engine is peppy and smooth. The car handles well and is good in the snow. When you shift from a stopped position to Drive or Reverse, the automatic transmission takes a couple of seconds to engage. I had a couple of electrical problems with the motors that operate the sunroof and the windows, they were covered under warranty. There are many features the Jetta comes with that I dont see on some expensive European imports and the car has a solid feel. I purchased one of the very first Jettas with the "new" design and attribute the minor problems with it being a sort of prototype.
