This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • Oil burner - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

This car is fun to drive but I would not recomend the automatic transmission, it slips and they say it is normal. DO NOT GET THE 2.0 Liter Engine... Burns OIL BADLY (1 qt every 900 miles) and they wont fix it, Cruise Control is broken from the day I bought it. I am 62" and do not fit well with the leg room, so I hope you are less than 6 tall. Great Car until something goes wrong. Also the heated mirriors never worked so I cant give an opinion about them.

  • piece of #!*! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I purchased my jetta used, stupid me! First off the O2 sensor went out, then the fuel latch wont latch anymore, the cruise only works 1/3 of the time, yellow goo leaks out the bottom of the doors in summer, then finally the biggst of all problems the transmission failed at 58500 miles. BIGGEST mistake Ive ever made. Consider something else before you make the mistake I made.

  • Ill never BUY a VW again! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

After 6 mnts of owning the car it was in the shop weekly. There was some kind of light that prevented me from taking my car out of park!what!?Then for no reason the back seat belt tightened up to the point that it would not move, it was so tight that it was ruining the leather in the car. Then I was told I needed new spark plugs and a spark plug wire set,it was $13 per spark plug and the wire set was $350!Total it was about $500 for a simple fix! Then my coil pack went bad which was $600 plus they told me that my coil pack ruined my plugs and wires again,(happened about a week after i already replaced the plugs and wires). I dumped that car at a dealership and will never own a German car again!

  • I will NEVER buy a VW again - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

From day one, this car has been nothing but trouble. I fell in love with the looks (exterior/interior), but failed to research warranty and reliability. Things that happened: Exterior paint has come off in some places, had to have emergency brake cable replaced, had to have spark plug re-wiring done, had to get starter replaced (engine died), and had to have muffler replaced all under 50,000 miles. Tires didnt last long, and neither did the brake pads. Repairs have cost me $2,500 plus and dealers were not helpful. Buyer Beware...I think Ill go back to Toyotas which never gave me trouble. The new Camry we have is GREAT!

  • Dont Do It!!!!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I had heard what reliable cars VWs were, at the time I was employed at a Buick dealership and a Jetta came in on trade. I bought it, HUGE MISTAKE. Car is expensive to maintain. Emission control problems, Interior parts I.E. Glove box door, lamps, cup holders, all complete junk. Car uses excessive amounts of oil, window regulators break, replaced catalytic converter twice. Parts are way overpriced..a new ignition key is 200 dollars. Customer service and support are as unreliable as the car.

  • DONT BUY IT!!!!!!!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

DONT BUY IT!! I have had so many problems with this car. The Transmission, window regulators, the serpentine belt (twice)---which caused my a/c, alternator, and power steering pump to go out. Which I was charged, b/c the car was at 24,400 miles. VW has no pride in their cars, just ask the service manager if they drive one.... I promise, they dont!!!!

  • Hope you can drive a stick - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

For those who want an automatic transmission get ready for some fun. The memory transmission is so sensitive that it shifts differently according to what pair of shoes I have on. This can be VERY ANNOYING! I hope that this is not a big problem in the newer models. I had my transmission reset when I first got the car because the shifting was so weird. Its good on gas and I havent had any other problems. Oh yeah and it has minimal torque. This is a great car for a commuter, student, or as a second car.

I am less than impressed with the Jetta TDI I unfortunately purchased.

  • Caught on fire! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Do yourself a favor and do not even consider purchasing a Jetta. I have painstakingly taken care of my Jetta for the past 4.5 years. One day, after not driving it for hours, my car just caught on fire and was destroyed. This happened because of faulty electrical components. VW told me that this is not uncommon and that they have had many complaints about this problem. However, they are not offering anything to me to compensate for my lost car because it was out of warranty. By the way, my Jetta only had 40,000 miles on it. Hope this helps...

  • Not a honda - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Bought this car for its driver oriented characteristic. Satisfied on that front. However, reliability is questionable at best.
