This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • Dont buy this piece of junk!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I wish I had bought an Acura RSX for just allittle more money. Everything just keeps on going wrong with this car, for example cruise wont work, fuel latch wont work, remote entry wont work half the time, O2 sensor went bad, finally the transmission threw a gear uot the side of it. By the way a new transmission from vw is $2,500. I HATE THIS CAR!! Oh yeah the sorry cup holder broke. I guess I just got burned.

I bought it used (1 year old). It has been great and the mileage and performance is awesome. Definitley a good value for the price paid.

  • Lots of Trouble - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I put a lot of work into this car when I bought it used. It only had 65,000 miles miles on it. At 75,000 miles it had a major break down and I had to put $3,000 of work into it. Also, this cars body lean around corners is terrible. I think it contributed to the car spinning out twice. Both times I was going around a corner at less than 10 mph more than the posted limit. Ive never had a car spin out on me before, and I have driven a lot of cars. On the upside, the body is quite sturdy and didnt damage much on impact though the seatbelt injured me. The transmission on the automatic never seemed to want to shift up even though I had it serviced when I bought it. It could have been abused, but still.... This car was a bit of a money pit.

  • NEVER again! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

It is not a reliable car. Does not like going up hills, doest like snow, power windows stink-mine would start going up & down independently then caught on fire (no flames but lots of smoke in my car right behind my head), alloy wheels break when you hit a pothole - mine were discontinued so they dont match now, alternater and starter both replaced, antifreeze leaks ($18/gal), got stranded/towed 2 times in the past year, spark plugs and other wires not good, and now the transmission will not shift ... its not a safe car when you pull out of a toll booth on a highway and cant get above 40! I cant even think what else is wrong with the car, I would never buy another one.

  • BEWARE!!!!!!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

This is the absolute worse car I’ve even owned. I’ve dubbed it “Christine”. Let’s see there in the O2 sensor issue. the green-ooze that drips out of door onto frame, the horrible gas mileage the tail light that needs to be replaced ever month, the moon roof comes off the tracks, the gas tank door won’t latch anymore, leaking off oil, the safety belt latch keeps breaking. Customer Service of VW, they SUCK and are RUDE. Not to mention when my Jetta broke down in the middle of a Midwest Winter two hours from my house, they didn’t send someone right away and than they lost my car. Yup, didn’t know which dealership the car had been taken too, this ordeal lasted over a week.

  • Love This Car - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I just bought this car and it has been in the shop a couple times but it has been for small things. I love it, the appearance is awesome and is very fun to drive. I love the VR6 model, if u buy a VW then u have to buy the VR6 or the Turbo version of this, any other model is junk. There are so many performance options to this car but yes parts are expensive. My headlights are fogging up and its 200 bucks a light and for a new key its another 200 so if i were gonna go through a dealership for these thats 600 bucks. But if u look on-line you can find lights dirt cheap. so people bashing this car look for parts on-line, you will save money.

  • Solid car, just a few quirks - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

This car is my second car and I love it. Outside of annoying issues like power window failure and freeze- happy parking brakes (a side effect of single digit temperatures), this car has been nothing but great. Awesome features like the sunroof and stereo, leather steering wheel, etc. The car isnt fast, but it feels sporty with the 5-speed manual and turns out great gas mileage. Overall a great car, I cant wait to get my next VW!

  • Tired of getting it to the shop - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Like so many other owners, Ive loved my Jetta-it is stylish and fun to drive, but I am tired of taking it to the shop every 8-10 weeks for something or other to be fixed! The things that brake are like others: glove box twice, motor to gas cap misfuntioned, tail lights always going out, etc. Not critical, but they are annoying. Seems like as soon as I have left the dealership, the next thing goes. VW has been good about incurring the expense for many repairs, but I am tired of arranging rides to the dealership to pick it up. Itll break my heart, but it is time to end this relationship. I wont make the same mistake again

  • Excellent design/mediocre quality - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I have a love-hate relationship with this car. Great fun to drive, adequate power, fantastic fuel mileage (43-52 mpg). I drive 40K per year & have pretty pleased. Repairs & maintenance too expensive. $650 timing belt expense. $450 air flow sensor @ 85K.

  • Jetta 1999 VR6 GLS - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I loved the car when I purchesed it, but this changed as problems arose. High maintenance and a lot of problems. Replaced several seals and gaskets, a/c, transmission, catalytic converter. The car only has 61,000 miles. Costly to repair because only dealership mechanics can practically fix these cars.
