This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • What A Pioneer - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

This car is phenomanal. Not only have I had none of the problems that other reviewers have had (Im soory that theyve had those problems by the way, they are missing out) but it is the most fun to drive car around. Nothing has acted up, nothing has failed, and nothing has been replaced. This car is a definate buy.

I just recently traded in my Jetta after getting sick and tired of having it break down and in the shop every month. I have had so many frustrations with this car; broken cup holders, front bumper coming off, car not shifting out of park, nasty yellow goop (that I was told was a blown head gasket), windows falling into doors, trunk motor going out, replaced oxygen sensor, broken glove box, in-dash cd player not working, radio randomly not working, sunroof breaking... need I go on. I have had this car for 3 years, had 8 recalls and only 52,000 miles (had 15,000 when I purchased). Needless to say, I got rid of it after getting way in over my head. If you own a 99 I suggest you do the same.

  • Love it - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

This car has always been a blast to drive. Its especially great for highway cruising. A smooth ride and plenty of power that will push you back in your seat. Back seat is cramped, only okay if youre under 58" or so. Trunk is huge. Doesnt handle quite as well as Id like. Get the performance spring kit which is a big improvement. Has had a few problems, all well-known Jetta problems (fuel door, glove box door, window regulator, MAF). Most problems fixed under warranty and most of the problems VW seems to have a handle on. Even with the past problems I love the car and Ive never had a mechanical problem, and consider it very reliable.

Personally, I will never purchase another VW product as long as I live. I bought this vehicle as a long term investment of at least 6-7 yrs, Ive had it for only 3 yrs now and Im dreading the what Im going to have to repair next. The littany of issues I have/had with my car are as follows: A/C unit broke; AM radio does not work; Motor to gas cap latch broke; light for alarm on driver door lock dropped into the door; Battery died, Mass Air Flow sensor; O2 sensor (still waiting on VW of America for re-imbursement for recall); interior trim peeling on doors; yellow green lubricant leaks from doors in hot weather; and turn signals occasionally stop blinking.

  • Overall, great car! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Im sorry others have had so much frustration with their Jettas. I had a bunch of things go wrong in the first 6 months, but they were all fixed under warranty, so I dont really mind. Nothing has broken twice and nothing has broken out of warranty (36,000 miles in the first year). This dealer and service department are top-notch. I drive an hour for service -- even for oil changes! They are as cheap as Jiffy-lube, and they know its a VW, not a "Volvo" like JL tried to tell me.

  • Scap Metal on Wheels - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I loved my Jetta when I bought it, until one day the air conditioning blew hot and would cost $1,300 to fix due to compressor failure, the windows motors went out before that, so now my car is a portable sauna. It has an oil leek, the automatic transmission automatically drops itself into neutral. The silver paint is oxidizing and rusting (this shouldnt happen), and the dip stick broken and inaccurate. I also agree that the recline twist handle is midevil torture. The timing belt rotated and caused my engine to turn off and not start. This happened while driving...scary and costly. All in all, Id rather burn my money than buy a 99 Jetta Wolfsburg. Oh yeah and my seat magically came unbolted. The speedometer works once a week if Im lucky

bought a previously owned 99 Jetta last summer thinking I could save myself some money... Ive lost track, but Ive been back to the dealer at least 14 times in 7 months! A stereo which has been replaced twice, new brake rotors, oil leak, a alarm that goes off by itself, non-working cigarette lighter, interior lights which work when they feel like it, and a engine light that mysteriously crept on by itself..Currently the stereo is not working once again..but ive been too busy and tired to go back to the dealer. If i werent a poor 23 year old..I would be well rid of it.

  • Solid Car with Few Headaches - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

This is all the car I expected and more. I wanted a compact sedan that would still be fun to drive. With a 28- mile commute, my Nissan truck was eating me alive on gas costs. I love this car. The car corners great. I have had the car to 110 mph and still accelerating before my good sense kicked in and caused me to let off the gas pedal. The best thing is that I can drive 75-80 mph to work and still get 30 mpg, and the car does not drag up hills even at that speed. Issues: ignition switch had to be replaced and the front driver and passenger windows stick quite a bit.

  • Great Car! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

We have had this car as our family car for a little over a year and it runs and handles great! It is 10 years old and has 138,000 miles on it and we have only ever changed a tire and the oil. I agree that the cup holder is cheap and ours is broken too. Our emergency break is not working but it is I guess an easy fix nad the washer flid doest work, leaky hose. The sound system is great. We took it on 2400 mile round trip amd it did great. Very peppy! Love this car!

  • Unreliable Jetta - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I would never buy another VW. This car has costed me over 2500.00 in the past two years. Several problems that are a small fortune to fix. Not reliable and always in the repair shop.
