This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

Fun to drive, stylish and beats all other cars in its class easily.

This car has a few MAJOR flaws. The electrical system is junk. I have had the left rear power window go out several times. The wiring is poor. It is also expensive to have repaired. It drives well and gets reasonable gas milage. If I were to buy another (which I wont) I would get the basic version. Less things to have problems with.

My Jetta turns heads, maybe because its red, but I have gotten many compliments. This car feels solid, drive is fun.

Ive had my car for two years. At first I loved it, it was cute and trendy. Well now every time I pull out of a parking space my front bumper falls off. Ive had to replace two batteries. My electric windows died. The interior is shot ( leaks, falling headliner, parts breaking.) Ive spent thousands in repairs. Today Im going to the auto shop to replace the reference sensor $233 and the oxygen sensor $247. Non stop repairs

I bought this vehicle used. It is has all of the extra options such as a moonroof, power-everything, cruise, and a terrific sound system. I love the car so far. The one thing that I do not like about this car is the power window failure. Apparently this is common in Volkswagen cars and it is very expensive to repair.

  • Not a Safe Car! Buy a Volvo! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

This car was recalled four times before it was involved in a mojor accident! The car was totaled and non of the four air bags deployed. VW had the nerve to say the car did what it was supposted to do. Half of the hood and its mechanical parts were left on the side of the road, but not the AIR BAGS! My families 6th and last VW / Audi product!

Ive had to replace the engine due to a "freak accident" where the block was cracked mid drive($4K refurbished). All of my window motors have broken, if you buy this car, yours will break too. The O2 sensors, replaced, the side paneling has fallen off. And then just random things, such as the glove box will no longer open??? The alarm system had to be turned off completely due to that going crazy. Antenna is cracked, I just purchased fog light covers (cause the original drivers side fell off), new headlight due to condensation. Etc. etc. etc. Buying parts is expensive, they almost always have to be VW. My dipstick magically broke off and I had to go thru VW to replace it.

I own a automatic Jetta Gls and it took sometime to time getting used to the Transmission features, Once the transmission became familar with my driving style, it handles and drives like a race car. Wasnt very impressed with the quality of the inside cover of the sunroof though "cardboard with carpet" very flimsey. Car can be very noisy if you only have the sunroof open too. If you have any back problems I would buy this car !! Very good support for the back and you can move virtually anything with the seat.

Once things start to break, it is all over. Windows falling down are a constant problem. Door handles are peeling apart. Computer chip in front driver side door shorted, which causes the car not to realize the door is closed, and dings for the first 2 minutes of the ride. Mass airflow sensor, fuel pump relay have had several problems and replaced multiple times. Fan for A/C and heat broke. Windsheild washer fluid doesnt make it to the windsheild.

  • Great car! Best Ive ever owned, I am 40 - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Awesome! Great car. The TDI motor is peppy (when linked to the 5-spd. manual) and gets 45-50 mpg. The driveability is excellent. Sporty. Mine has 70,000 and only minor things have had to be replaced, namely, cup holder assembly, glove box door, and power sunroof track guides. The only other bad thing Ive encountered is that in severely cold weather (-10 to 0 degrees), I had the fuel "gel up" on me and had to be towed. Other than that FANTASTIC!. Best car ever owned, this includes: Ford Taurus, Ford Mustang GT, Plymouth Voyager SE, Subaru Wagon, Cutlass Supreme, AMC Spirit, Audi 5000T and more! Id buy another one tomorrow.
