This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • Used to Love VW - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought my 1999 Jetta new with a 100,000 mile warranty. The starter went out at 38,000 miles (not covered). The window motor went out at 42,000 miles (not covered). The side molding came off at 50,000 miles (not covered). Now the stereo volume doesnt work properly and the big one, I need a new tranny and the clutch went out at 65,000 miles (probably covered but forgot to take it to the dealer). Oh yeah, my second starter went out at 55,000 miles and my second and third window motors are gone.

Ive been very pleased with my Jetta. Its fun to drive and it looks great. The only draw back was the standard roll-up windows. Im glad to know the 2003s will have power as part of the standard model. A little tight in the back seat. I would buy another.

  • The miracle find - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I just bought my 1999 VW Jetta, private sale, and it only had 97K on the vehicle. I reconditioned it this weekend and I honestly cant believe this car is 16 years old. It drove well on the ride around the block, so I just knew it had potential to be one of these cars that you hear about making it to 300K. So I have taken the maintenance schedule in stages, because I am not under any illusions that things wont need to be replaced, BUT it will still be cheaper than making a car payment and paying full coverage insurance and maintenance costs.

  • King of the corners - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

The 2.0 liter 8v is sluggish. This, however, is the only complaint I can make about this beautiful European car. Although it doesnt feel that stable, it can take corners faster than is legal in most jurisdictions. Interior design is typical flawless VAG quality. Everything is laid out logically and is well placed. The sound system delivers crisp highs and mids, and decent lows. The 5-speed shifts smoothly, and the clutch provides no fight. The best thing is, this car has 145,000 miles on it, and it is still running perfectly, with a smooth idle. It still pulls strong right up to the redline. VW reliability proves itself once again. Excellent car.

I love my Jetta vr6 2.8 liter its fast Im going to be adding a turbo to it the only thing about it is that I do not like about the car was replacing parts that expensive hard to find for the vr6 otherwise the car is great to drive looks nice on the road with all the fences stuff that I put on it hard to find the right suspension system to lower my car now I gotta replace the clutch after 182000 miles on the car but the cars been great to me never had major problems so now is time to give her stage 1 racing clutch and a full air suspension ride behandle bility and replace my 17 inch low profile rims and tires for 18 inch low profile rims and tires my wife hates the car because I love my car more than I love her Thank You Volkswagen I wish you made another vr6 in the newer model with the sunroof I would buy it in a heartbeat but now I will not give up this car no matter what even for new one even if you gave it to me for free I still would not trade it in for seems to me every time I go by the dealership somebodys always offering money to buy my vr6 they said its hard to find and very rare in this condition special all the things Ive added to the car to make sure dress up beautiful and fast its hard to give up something that you built by hand

  • Looks Good, Works Badly - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Amazing, all of the problems Ive had with this car are echoed in this list of reviews. I bought the car three months ago and its been returned for service five times already. The last time it wouldnt shift out of 3rd gear. Im trading it in for something more reliable. The oxygen sensor, tranmission problems, mass air sensor replaced twice, non-working rear window defogger, broken cupholders, broken sunroof sliding cover. Im disgusted. This thing is a money pit. Its a beautifully designed, but badly executed vehicle. When it worked, though, it was fun to drive.

  • Pay me now or pay me later - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Styling and ride are fine. I cant believe the things that went wrong that I have never experienced in a car in my life. Windows(2) dropping down into the door for no reason. Both cupholders that wont work. Whats that about. Trunk release went inop for no reason. AM radio side has a range of about 2.4 miles. Mass air system not being covered by drive train warranty - but on a regular gas engine it was a recall repair. My power went down 50% because of this. $500 to repair. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Makes customer loyalty hard to consider. Other than this, I love the car. Dumb stuff hurts an otherwise nice car.

  • Nightmare Experience - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I will never lease a VW again! I have had nothing but problems since the second day that I have had my Jetta. Problems range from windows falling into the door, a sunroof that doesnt work more than it does, and an engine that needs to be replaced. I havent had my car 3 years and honestly feel that I have a lemon. To date I have spent almost 3500 on a car that isnt 3 years old!! BEWARE!!
