Overview & Reviews
The 237-hp R32 makes its debut for 2004 complete with a six-speed manual transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive. The GTI sports restyled 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels. There's also a new fuel cap warning light.
- Potent R32 model, fun to drive, reasonably priced, lots of standard equipment, premium cabin materials, utility of hatchback design, available six-speed manual.

Drive it. Youll get it. - 2004 Volkswagen GTI
By turboidiot - July 31 - 10:00 amVolkswagen is right with that one. I test-drove the 1.8T after I took out a Mazda 3 5-door from the same lot... there is no comparison. It feels like you are one with the road, handles great, and there is a lot of power inside. Sometimes, the thought of the drive home is the only thing that gets me through 12 hour days waiting tables!

Actually a Really Great Car - 2004 Volkswagen GTI
By JSC - March 24 - 7:33 pmI purchased this car in 2007 at a VW dealership that had sold and serviced the car since new. It came to me with 24k miles, and Im now unfortunately selling it (blame it on the economy) with 63k miles. I honestly have to say that Im already regretting selling it - I love this car! Its a complete sleeper - it appears as a small econo-box to unsuspecting motorists, but its really, really quick and can handle surprisingly well for a front-wheel drive car & the interior is up there with Audi/BMW/Mercedes/etc... Parts and labor charges at the dealer are up there also, it is a German car, so keep that in mind. If you cringe at $80 oil changes, do it yourself, or find a mechanic that does VWs.

I Like it a Lot - 2004 Volkswagen GTI
By steve - March 18 - 9:16 ami bought my 2004 VW GTI with some hesitation, I was concerned about the reliability. It has had some minor issues with reliability in the electrical department. I knew going in too that this car takes premium gas. This is not a great thing with a car that averages 19-24 mpg and the current cost of gas. Having said this, I do declare, that this car is wonderful. It is not a hot rod, but it is very fun. if I need the horses or torque, they are there. It is very solid, and the most comfortable car that I have ever owned. The hatchback is great, easy access and roomy. I dont see myself coming and going on the highways and byways of this town. I strongly recommend this funky little car.

2004 VW GTI 1.8T Review - 2004 Volkswagen GTI
By Jillian - March 17 - 12:26 pmMy 2004 Volkswagen GTI broke down twice within the first week of my purchase. I had to have the entire computer system replaced. The interior quality is horrible...all the little pieces seem to be breaking i.e. console clasp, front seat release handle (to get into backseat) and foot vent. The A/C failed on the hottest day in the summer on the NJ parkway in bumper to bumper traffic...cool! I suppose that this is a decent first car for younger drivers.

Triumphant Pocket Rocket - 2004 Volkswagen GTI
By M - February 28 - 9:36 amIve had my GTI for right at 6 years now. Thus far I have only had one problem with it, and it was my fault. (I damage the clutch switch whilst I was installing an aftermarket sound system.) The car is quick - not fast, a title I reserve for vehicles that are actually fast, comfortable, and fun to drive. The leather seems to be of relatively high quality, and is quite supple. For an economical two door compact this one is great.

Never stranded, but always annoyed!!!!! - 2004 Volkswagen GTI
By IhateEngineLights - February 9 - 2:00 amI like the car. It is decent for milage and gas and getting me from A to B. I do not like going to the dealer to drop $160 so frequently to get a new Oxygen sensor. What the heck is that all about? Why do I have to see my obnoxious little engine light on **SO** much???????? It is too bad you can return cars, because I would have out of shear frustration.... Too new for these problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Affordable Sports Luxury - 2004 Volkswagen GTI
By A VW to BMW owner - January 31 - 11:16 pmThis is the nicest car Ive owned and I have owned plenty of American as well as foreign cars. Its nice to have every amenity possible including a cold weather package that included heated leather seat, heated mirrors, and head washer nozzles. The tilting & telescopic steering along with the fully adjustable seats make this car fit like a glove. The premium stereo is up there with high-end luxury models as well as the overall performance. The 200 h.p. VR6 runs perfect and with the paired smooth shifting 6-speed transmission, the drive is anything but dull. Congrats to making an affordable autobahn bred sports car obtainable by the working class.
