Overview & Reviews
Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.
Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

Cheap quality but fun - 2005 Toyota Tacoma
By jake - April 20 - 10:53 amBought used with 50,000 and now my transmission went out, clutch, shocks, and the grill flew off on the free way. Its still a blast to drive and I like the styling and the size with a six speed manual. It needs more horse power and insulation. Bumpy all most drove off the free way twice.

Very Refined Truck - 2005 Toyota Tacoma
By Jason - April 16 - 4:16 amI have 2,500 miles on it so far, and have averaged 18-23 mpg. Very pleased with the torque output on such a small engine. Manuverable, and capable offroad, while still refined and quiet on the highway.

HORRIBLE DRIVETRAIN - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
By Don Cain - April 14 - 6:28 amThe 2016 Tacoma with the v6 is horrible when using cruise control. When traveling 75mph or higher with cruise control on transmission does not want to shift out of 4th gear most of the time which results in poor fuel economy. It will shift into 5th sometimes but usually stays in 4th gear. I drove from Omaha, ne. to Denver Co. mostly in 4th gear because it would not shift into a higher gear, I got a whopping 14.6 miles to the gallon. I cant believe I traded my 2015 Tacoma for a 2016 Tacoma. I was told by a Toyota Service Mgr. that this truck needs a turbo charger because it lacks so much power. I have called Toyota Corp. I have had the truck in twice once in Denver and once in Omaha and was told this is how the truck is suppose to run. I called Toyota Corp. They were no help what so ever. Toyota knows this drivetrain is terrible but will not do anything about it.

Why Did I Wait? - 2006 Toyota Tacoma
By Kelshm - April 14 - 4:40 amI am your typical "Truck Guy". I have loved the small 4X4 pickup since Datsun had them out in the early 80s. I have never owned one though, until this one. I dont know why I waited so long. In my job I drive many vehicles and once I drove the 06 Tacoma, I knew I was home. I havent driven a smoother more comfortable pickup of this size ever. I also have a disability that causes me to suffer a great deal of pain when driving most vehicles. I dont experience any pain when driving my Tacoma. If everyone built a vehicle this solid and reliable, I would be out of work. There is a reason that a used Tacoma sells at or near its original selling price.

My New 2005 Tacoma - 2005 Toyota Tacoma
By IQDHILLON2 - April 12 - 9:13 pmThis truck Is as Tough as the original Tundra. It only gets better gas mileage. It also has a 245 horsepower Engine. It also Includes a 282 foots torque. One thing I love about my new Tacoma is its Deck Rail System, it makes carring lugage less of a hassel. To my opinion this truck rocks. It will give atleast 22miles to the gallon. Even the next tacoma will not be as appealing as this truck. I love it!

The perfect sized pickup - 2005 Toyota Tacoma
By phil - April 12 - 8:56 pmI struggled driving a pickup too small to carry my kids (Mazda) and too large for me to feel lost (F-150). Then I found an 05 Tacoma - perfect! Had the most interior room of my three finalists (Colorado and Frontier). Well thought out interior with access doors and just enough room in back to carry my children on short runs (I dont recommend it for long trips). Plenty of storage and good power from the 2.7 engine while getting 21 mpg in local driving. The 4WD is great in snow. Love the flexibility of the pickup bed with movable cargo tie downs on front and side rails plus bed "D" hooks. The composite bed material looks promising - lets see how well it wears over time.
