Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

  • Nice Ride, Nice Truck! - 2005 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I always wanted a Tacoma, mostly for the build quality...but the older models just werent large enough for my 6 2" and 240 lb frame. When they changed to the new body style, I had to go test drive it and WOW...was I amazed! I bought the truck with no regrets to date and with no problems either, I just rolled over 25,000 miles after 7 months...its definitely a keeper. I like the overall handling, the ride, and the interior features and space. My wife enjoys it as well...can hardly get the keys out of her hands. I bought the Pre-runner model, she likes the way it sits up in traffic and how other vehicles get out of her way on the highway. Just a nice Truck!

Vrreeeeep!!! Thats the sound it makes with a supercharger!! Truck is a blast to drive. I had to retard the timing a little for the supercharger (TRD says you dont need to, but you do to avoid pinging). Anyway, the truck has more punch than anything Ive driven. I can outrun any truck on the road and still maintain better average gas mileage. Ive put 17000 miles on it since I bought it and I have no complaints. GET ONE!!!! Supercharge it!!

  • Terrific truck! Very happy. - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Toyota nailed it with the 2016 Tacoma. I purchased a TRD Off-Road, Double-Cab, short bed truck with the premium and technology packages, sunroof, folding bed cover, and towing package. Overall: I could hardly be happier with the truck. The technology is terrific; it wirelessly charges my cell phone in the center console, senses cross traffic when I am backing out of a parking spot, identifies cars in my blind spot when moving one lane over, and displays my surroundings on the large lcd screen in the dash when reversing. It also has a power outlet in the bed of the truck for tailgating. I love the look of the trucks exterior and am pumped about the ride quality, quietness of the cab, and comfort of the interior. Even in the TRD Off-Road trim, this truck matches my wifes Lexus for ride quality, and as a result, it has become our main vehicle. The rear selectable locking differential is terrific. And the safety of this truck won my wife over. Best of all, the Tacoma came with a lifetime power train warranty and free service for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Technology: When you add the technology and premium packages, this truck has all of the gadgets typically found in luxury vehicles like Lexus, including blind-spot monitoring, a backup camera, wireless phone charging, Bluetooth, predictive traffic maps, weather, e-mail and text messaging, satellite radio, crawl control, and more. It automatically unlocks when I touch the drivers door handle with the key fob in my pocket. Id be hard pressed to come up with more technology I would want in the truck. Ride quality: The ride is phenomenal. The truck soaks up large and small bumps far better than I expected. Gone is the spine-shaking sensation that pickup trucks often have when the rear axle hits a short, harsh bump. Steering: While not as precise or firm as my sports car, the truck feels planted. I can confidently pick and hold a line at speed on Georgias curvy roads. Interior materials: The trucks dash looks terrific. You can change the interior accent colors with the touch of a button. I love the display for the GPS and radio. The smaller lcd screen between the speedometer and tachometer is packed with technology and displays more information than I thought I would ever need in a truck, from tire pressure, to a compass, to the name of the street I am driving on. I love the 9 cup holders for the front two seats alone, with an additional four in the rear for a total of thirteen. I am shocked by some of the reviewers that complain about the interiors quality. The materials are handsome, and are a snap to clean the mud off of. I love the all weather mats, a definite must. Exterior: One of my favorite options so far has been the folding tonneau cover. By locking the tailgate, I can store my chainsaw and other tools without worrying about them walking off. The bed cover keeps my stuff dry, and its easy to remove when loading up the dirt bikes for the weekend. The styling of the truck has prompted two neighbor buddies to come over unannounced and chat about the truck. Areas for improvement: Sure, there are a few things I would change. I agree with the reviewers who said that some options are missing for a truck in this price range, including a garage door opener (a $250 option, on top of the couple thousand dollar technology and premium packages), few interior color options, and manual seats. I also agree that the truck shifts often when set on cruise at 85 miles per hour. Set at a more reasonable speed of 70 miles per hour, however, the truck hums along just fine and gets reasonable gas mileage, though not mind-blowing. The bottom line is that I chose this truck because its exactly what I wanted after researching all of the trucks competitors. Go ahead and buy a different truck if you want, but I know that this truck will be reliable over the long haul, and it has been so enjoyable so far that Ive been coming up with reasons to drive it or run to the garage to look at it. Finally, that Toyota stands behind this truck gives me confidence in my purchase. Not so with some of the other guys, and Ive already seen a 2015 model of a competitors truck broken down on the side of the highway. I would definitely make the same decision again to buy the 2016 Tacoma. I hope this review helps.

Great truck. No need for 4wd on PreRunner offroad.

This truck surpasses my 2 previous Toyota trucks in comfort and features, inside and out. Last Toyota was a 99 SR5 4x4. After 10 great years, lost to the 08 frame recall for which I was reimbursed . No other vehicle was better in its class. Looking at fuel prices and my new status as a senior, a modest baseline, 4x4 4 banger was my choice. I tested heavily before I bought, steep mountain grades on gravel to blacktop straightaways with 1/4 ton of clay aboard (quite a sight at the dealership!). Pleasantly surprised at power and agility. The 2.7-4 really performs, unexpectedly quiet, watch the tach. Front transmission is now on a switch - nice touch. Cab is roomy.

  • Almost Like my Last One - 2001 Toyota Tacoma

Replaced my 1990 SR5 V6-XtraCab 5-Sp 4X2 w/150,000 miles with a new one, but the closest thing to it Toyota makes to replace it is the S-Runner. The interior on the old one used higher quality materials. The 2001 has thin cheap plastic all through the interior. The 90 had all analog gauges. The new model goes with more idiot lights. No rattles on the 90 even after 150,000 logged on the clock. My 2001 S-Runner rattles like crazy right out of the box. The gearing on the S-Runner is too tall, requiring a lot of clutch slipping to get rolling. I like the new engine on the S-Runner, but I wish I had my old SR5- V6 back.

  • Perfect - 2003 Toyota Tacoma

Can you spell P-E-R-F-E-C-T? After having experience with other manufacturers for years, I finally stepped up and bought a Toyota. Not one problem, perfect. If you want a great little truck, buy a Toyota. If you want to continue to be disappointed buy something else. Its your money!

  • Great Truck, But Not Perfect - 2009 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

This being my second Tacoma, I expected Toyota to have made an amazing truck even better. It is better in some aspects: size, comfort, ride, and amenities. But, one thing I have found so far is that this truck has many little annoyances. For example, the brakes are a joke. It feels like Im driving a car from the seventies with no power brakes. I feel myself being very cautious when stopping at a red light - afraid I might just run over the car in front of me. Cant imagine towing a boat or a trailer with these brakes. Another thing is a mysterious sound coming out of the driver-side seat belt pillar. It sounds like a screw is rolling around in there. Very annoying.

  • Great technology - 2005 Toyota Tacoma

I opted for the Short bed so it fit in my garage, still have about 18" left over. I traded my 2003 Corolla for the Tacoma. Based on the research I had done the Tacoma always came on top. Handling: Has excellent acceleration, corners and stops nicely. The interior is pretty confortable and feels like a small SUV or a car. So far I have averaged 21 MPG, but I dont get on it too hard! I have added Toyota running boards, they look great and the Off RD package adds a lot. Oh, the 24Valve, V6, 281 ft.lbs of Torque is ready to haul. I decided on the Tacoma for reliability. We are planning a long trip next week. Cheers to all who have one.
